Hi there. I'm a fairly old geezer who decided to hem my own jeans. Bought a 4423 singer, but practiced a bit in recent weeks,on light materials, using a tiny Toyota machine I bought at salvation army for $7. I used that experience to quickly learn the 4423. Your video was very helpful. With no sewing experience - but with youtube videos like yours - I hemmed 5 pair of my tough old jeans in the past 2 days. The first 2 were nothing to brag about but the 6th pair were brand new jeans, lighter material, and I'm proud to say ... my hem looks about 95% as good as the factory hem. I used 110/18 Schmetz needles and Coats & Clark Dual Duty Plus thread you mentioned. Snipping a bit of the hem out REALLY helps on thick, heavy duty jeans. Thanks very much!

Thank You Cynthia. As a father of five and retired, I'm going to try and hem my own bluejeans. Your video made the most sense of all the others. Cutting a wedge out of the side seam is such a brilliant and simple solution to avoid and birdnesting and broken needles.

This is the first video I’ve ever seen showing how to sew the hem so it looks like the original. Other videos I’ve seen either have you glue or cut off the excess, scoot it up, and see it back on so you keep the original hem… but you have this span of stitched on fabric creating “stripes”. Love your method. Thanks posting this!

Well I was always hesitant about hemming jeans, but I just used your method on a pair of skinny jeans and it worked great. I will never be afraid of purchasing jeans again. I am 5'5" but the jeans are always long on me since I have short legs and a long torso. Have been frustrated with the length of all the jeans out there. I'm happy to say I'll be buying jeans now without hesitation. I've been sewing for over 40 years but afraid of sewing over that seam, thanks for the tips.

Thank you! I am so glad I found a tutorial on how to hem jeans this way. I didn't want to do it the way I saw other videos where they keep the original hem and do some weird funky folding thing. I don't know what they're doing. Lol. This is like how I was shown a long time ago but I had forgotten and needed a refresher. I love that you cut that little Section out at the thick seam. I will do that on my next jeans. I have three pairs I have to shorten. I think I can do it now. Thank you.

When it comes to feet for the sewing machine, this is my passion. So many people have feet and never use them at all. This never happens at my house. I use each and every foot that I have available. They are such a help when sewing difficult areas and I feel they are worth every penney invested. I use my seam guide and 1/4" foot alot. I also love my pleater foot and hemming foot. See what comes with your machine and start with those. If you need help with a foot, just let me know!

Cynthia, This method is brilliant--beyond many other methods. One of the points I appreciated about your method is SEWING FROM THE INSIDE INSTEAD OF THE OUTSIDE while hemming jeans. This part of the method works well either a flat bed machine, or (one of my favorites) even the ol' Singer-Featherweigh-in-a-mahogony-card-table. Keeping seamsters 'dependent' on a free-arm machine tends to limit their machine skill development. Thanks for sharing this method!

Thanks for the great video. I gave it a try, trying several variations (lengths and methods) on my trashed jeans first. What I ended up doing on my good jeans was instead of marking it was to just fold the hem up twice and removing part of the side seam like you did.. What I ended up with was approx. an inch and a half reduction of length which was pretty much perfect for me. Broke a few needles along the way but was a learning experience. Used a zig zag foot because it has a button you can use (on an old kenmore you put the needle down, raise the presser foot, push and hold the black button on the foot and lower the presser foot again then release the button which should lock the foot at a height to go over the bulge.. then release the button when you're back to the regular hem). Now I can walk around in socks without walking on the heal of the hem. Variations that I tried on my junker jeans: If you only need to turn the hem up once you can leave the bottom hem on so the originial thread is just under the fold. That one came out nicely. Another was to cut off the material just below the original hem before you turn it under so there's less material and there's an extra protection from fraying. I only folded that one once so there's an extra half inch of material above the new hem inside.(still achieved an inch and a half reduction since i cut some off).

Hi Cynthia! Happy New Year 2013! Thank you for sharing your sewing on your blog. I really appreciate any ideas on hemming jeans, because my hubby needs his new jeans re hemmed every time he gets new ones. I particularly like that you take into account the extra layers of fabric in the seams, & the blind hemmer presser foot to use. I use a compensating foot on my Bernina, so the high side is on the hem, the low side on the single layer of the pant leg, just like your blind hemmer foot! Thank you

Great job in describing in detail how to shorten a Jean’s especially the appropriate pressure foot and needle necessary to be used, stitch length, hem length and thread. May I suggest that the base of the “U” or top portion that was cut out, perhaps be shored up with a couple of zig, zag stitches firstly in order to prevent unraveling later.
