How to Hem Jeans Using the Original/Existing Hem - Looks Like They Haven't Been Altered!

This tutorial will show all the steps and tools needed to shorten jeans and other casual style pants with the original hem to keep the worn characteristics and stitching. This method is also called a French hem, or Euro hem. It's one of the best ways to hem pants and have them look like they haven't been altered.

@@TailorItYourself instead of (or in addition to) topstitching it is also possible to use a blind stitch to catch the hem higher up. You don't even need a blind hem foot or the angled picot stitch, just set the zig-zag length to maximum. But yes, the topstitching makes the seam flat where it matters the most.

@@dushk0 You certainly can do that, but I feel that blind stitching is pretty delicate. For the wear and abuse that most jeans get, blind stitching would not hold up as well as topstitching. You may also get a thicker wear line above the hem where it's been blind stitched.

Every time I washed my jeans the new hem was folded up when they came out of the dryer. I had to iron it down every time I wore them. Ugh. I've been taught to do it a little differently. You don't cut the original hem off first. You just measure the the length you need to take out, from sewing line of Jean hem to length of new hem. Fold in half, right sides together, and on underside, (wrongside) sew together right under original Jean hem. Turn over to right side and topstitch fold. Serge off excess. Secure side seams if necessary. Important last step is to steam press new sewing. Makes it look like new. Hope I explained this clearly. I appreciate the tip about pinching leg when marking. Never knew to do that! You are an excellent teacher. Very clear, easy to follow and understand. Blessings!

My mum is a tailor and started sewing when she was 6. She gets headhunted all the time and well known in the industry for her ability to cut patterns that fit seamlessly. I am a fusspot growing up when she makes my clothes. Watching this reminds me of her. You are sooooooo good. i think it wouldn't work without cussing and needles broken... should be part of instructions. i was at that stage an hour ago but i'm out of the woods now. tip for walking over the double-seam bulk: don't make the foot lift it's toes, make it level, lift the heel otherwise it gets stuck, and reduce presser tension as needed.

This is a wonderful technique with easy to follow instructions. One caveat, if you've ever had pants altered by a european tailor you'll recognize this. Most peoples' bodies do not have legs the same length, so every european tailor I've used has measured both legs and the lengths are always slightly different. In fact, if I go to a tailor now and they don't measure both legs, I find someone else. I'd recommend asking a friend to measure both legs. Sometimes the differences are very slight, in which case carrying on with your method for both legs will work. For me, there is 1/2"-1" difference depending on fabric in the pants, and also the shoes.

I am a retired surgeon, and have been sewing up people for 48 years. So, in a way, you could say that I like to sew, which I actually do like. To me, sewing is an art form, and I view myself as an artist. Over the years many patients and nurses have commented that my stitches are works of art, perfect, and very beautiful. Also, as a surgeon, I used many different materials to sew up people with, like various thicknesses of silk thread, various thicknesses of synthetic fibers, Cat Gut, even various gauges of wire, and also staples...to mention just a few. Another way to avoid the peaks is after you've marked the lines and before you cut the excess off, turn the pant so that you only see the front and if there's a peak to redraw the line straight across. Use your ruler to line up the marks on the side seams and run the chalk among the ruler. This will make a straight line below the peak. And redraw on the back as well. But you'll end up with a couple extra lines which can get confusing, so strike out the line you don't want to use to help keep track.

@@Sue-qc8ol The thread I'm using is normal weight thread. Either size 14 or denim size 16 would be good. Just depends on your machine and how it sews, and the thickness of your denim. Sometimes a 14 works better on really stretchy denim. Sometimes 16 is better if the denim is stiff and thick.

" Well I watched it and decided to try it out on a new pair of his jeans . Thought that marking which piece came off of which leg was useless, until I got to the part of putting them back on! I'm 5'2". I have to shorten EVERYTHING. There is next to no way a home sewing machine has the power to sew through the heavy jeans hems. This works! It preserves the original look, but shortens the pants perfectly. Thanks so much for this tip.

Excellent! Seems like alot of work just to retain that gold stitched old hem. Why not use same color thread as old hem when doing a new hem! Makes sense to me.

@@racheltharrington6241 You definitely can do it that way. Some people prefer to have the original wear lines and look of the stitching that may be hard to duplicate. But if you'd rather hem them with a traditional rolled hem, I have a video for that also.

Beautifully done! It's worth keeping in mind that the sewing machine needle needs to be the proper size for sewing denim. A regular needle can bend & break, so use a needle for heavyweight fabric. Nice job instructing this video!

One was with the serger and the other was with the zig zag on the regular machine. I didn't know of these techniques to be so easy to understand. I think my first question that ran through my head was, "how old is she." You are excellent at showing and explaining your tailoring techniques! As a child my parents didn't have a lot of money but my mother made a deal with me that if I agreed to sewing my own clothes she would buy my fabric and patterns! Needless to say buying the fabric was much cheaper than buying clothes (I wish it was still that way!) I sewed all my clothing through Junior and Senior High and many years past that. I love sewing and the freedom you have in making a garment truly yours! Thank you so much and I will be watching your videos from now on!

Definitely a tailor's nice and more thorough way of accomplishing an original hem. I don't have a machine so I've used the Pinterest way of sewing at the original hem then cutting off the excess. It's worked well for me but definitely it could've used a surge to prevent some fraying better than what I did...and the original hem flipped up once in a while. Great tutorial, thank you!

I watched another tutorial doing the same type of hemming but she did something that I think is a time saver and fail-proof. She did not cut the hem at all instead, she sewed it first to the markings THEN cut the excess she undid the original hem them trim the excess then sewed it all on the original line, and done! it seems so much easier and fast than your tutorial. I'm not saying yours is not good, is excellent but the way she did it made me want to do it. Your way I don't think I'd want to try and make a mistake, you should try her method I think is very helpful. Thank you

If I'm picturing correctly what you're describing, the draw back is that you won't be able to see your markings and line up your side seams as well if you don't cut of the excess beforehand. But there's more than one way to do things, so if the other way works for you then do what feels right. The way I demonstrate allows better ease for making sure everything lines up in the end. Also, if "undid the original hem" means she took out the stitching of the existing hem, that kind of defeats the purpose of an original hem.

This is the best video I’ve found on this subject. I could easily say “I agree with what everybody else says,” but some of it bears repeating. It’s very well organized. Attention is paid to details and suggestions are made for finessing a few things that one would only know about from experience and observation, such as pinching the lengthwise seam and emphasizing the exact placement of the stitch when reconnecting the cuff to the leg. This is all supported with well lit close-up shots of all the action.
