20 years ago my ferritin level was over 3000. It was off the scale. Still here, albeit with numerous ongoing health issues and operations. 75 yrs old now. The fifteen first years were the worst. Pain, opioids, chronic fatigue. I made it through and in my bonus life. I don't have high expectations - not able to do much, but I have someone to love, something to do and something to hope for, so I live thankfully. I am content.

Let me tell you my story. My ferritin was1700 in 12/2020 Doc and I blamed on supplement. march 2022 ferritin was 1700 ,again we blamed on red meat. in a mean time I experience gout. 3/2023 3month ago my blood work was so bad, ferritin 920 ALT and AST was like 200 Thyroid hormone was zero, worst of all HgA1c jumped to 6.9 .My oncologist started phlebotomy 250ml/month(concerning my low WBC and Low Neutrophil count) I had total 3 phlebotomy total blood removal 250 X 3 = 750ml. I was so desperate to become well, I started Carnivore diet + intermittent fasting on 3/22/23 . 9 weeks later I had my blood tests. ALT.AST normal,Thyroid normal, ferritin was 73, HgA1C=5.1 also lost 20lbs without trying too hard, lost 6 inches on my waist. (I do not have Hemochromatosis gene) The result was pure luck, it was not anyone's recommendation other than KZbin KenBerryMD. I am so happy to have found the way to regain my health.Doc said three phlebotomy did not lower my ferritin level. Something was causing inflammation and the cause was eliminated. In my case the cause of inflammation was Carbohydrate!

I suspect I’m in a similar situation. Intermittent fasting is really crucial I’m just going off of how I feel. After battleing leukemia and getting a bone marrow transplant, I had a level of 4000 it went unnoticed for almost 2 years. Then recently I was diagnosed with hemochromatosis. Dr says i have the mutated gene. I have gotten my levels down as low as 800, which for me was the lorat in 4 years. I'm doing more consistent phlebotomies. And I hope to get back to a normal range which will be the first time in almost 4 reach a normal range. I just hope that didn't do too much damage to my body.

Thanks! I have a very similar story, but I got a genetic test that confirmed I have the homozygous C282Y mutation that causes classic heredity hemochromatosis. In other words, the iron overload mutation came from both of my parents. In 1996, archaeologists discovered the genetic source of iron overload. Bronze Age Viking skulls found in Scotland had intact DNA with the C282Y mutation that causes iron overload.

I have C282Y mutation my parents have each one on this gene, my grandfather die because of this. My ferritin is good for now, but i have many complications, breast cancer, pain and arthritis, menopause at 45 years old, and other things. I need to change my diet because i think I’m not gonna live well so long. The doctor don’t help too much, he said he never knows about this desease. When I asked him to take this test he looked at me as if I were from another planet. This disease is very present in my family, and after my cancer I felt the urgency to know if I too had. In Quebec we have 1/300 people with this mutation. Doctors should be more aware. Thank you so much for all the explanations it's very useful

I had first notice a high ferritin level a few years back (around 500) and questioned it with my doctor. He said no worries because the liver enzyme tests came back as normal. Why the high ferritin then, I asked. Oh it is probably due to inflammation. I did a bit of research and became even more worried. Over the next 2 years the ferritin dropped a bit and came back up. I kept bugging the doctor about it and each time he would order some liver enzyme tests which turned out to be normal. In January 2021 after an online annual physical checkup, he sent me a requisition for lab work. He had skipped the ferritin test and went immediately for the liver enzyme tests which prove normal again. Heck, I wondered what was the ferritin level. My blood glucose was a bit high so I asked my doctor for a referral to a metabolic clinic. She order a full panel of tests to check for insulin resistance and cholesterol. I asked for a ferritin too. Everything came back as expected but the ferritin was 799! She claimed that ferritin was not her area of expertise and that she would recommend to my GP a referral to a hematologist. Meanwhile I started to take Ip6 with inositol 2000 mg daily. Three months later the ferritin went down to 575. Meanwhile I stopped taking Crestor because she suggested that the blood sugar problem could be cause by statins. To my dismay, the cholesterol went through the roof, so I went back on the Crestor. Meanwhile, my GP called to ask what was going on with my cholesterol so I took the opportunity to ask whether he had received the recommendation from the metabolic doctor regarding seeing a hematologist. He said no communication was received from the metabolic doctor, and besides it would be unlikely that a hematologist would accept me because there is nothing wrong with my liver enzymes and hematologists see mostly patients with serious problems like liver cancer. Jeez, there is no way out of this conundrum! Okay, let me see in 3 months whether the ip6 with inositol will further reduce the ferritin. What calmed me down a bit was the fact that studies have shown that organ damage rarely occurs with ferritin below 1000. This was a statement given by a specialist in hemochromatosis.

Family members are also the first people they test for donor organs (I've always told my two children to be nice to each other , cause you never know when you might need a kidney in joking) , my brother was a chomo, he died on the toilet .

Symptoms don’t usually show up until someone is in their 40s , and by then there may already be some damage. If I were you I’d test myself and my children. Women usually have problems in men’s pause bc they are longer bleeding. Extra iron deposits sit in many areas of the body from joints to liver to pancreas which can lead to early diabetes or cardiomyopathy. Catch it early so you don’t have to play catch up after organ damage.

I'm in the middle of similar scenario & ran across interesting info about our systems being depleted of copper (due to SAD, pesticides, glyphosate, etc). Seems copper regulates iron in the body (as well as other great things). A bisglycinate chelate form is touted as more bioavailable. It is helping but I think I'll also be needing the therapeutic phlebotomies as well.

I was taking turmeric for symptoms before and it seemed to have helped, but I didn't know I had it at the time. Going to start taking turmeric daily again. Also going to cut out most foods and supplements with iron. It's definitely good to know that I have it so I can take action now. I found out the nutritional yeast I just started taking has too much iron in it for me and I started having symptoms when I took some of that and had eggs and spinach and other foods with it.

I had no idea that the body accumulated iron over your lifetime. Small acute accumulation of iron leads to a decreased lifetime. There have already been proven data. Now the question is how do you remove the iron that has slowly moved into your organs? Because once it starts moving to your organs they start creating an oxidative reaction. How do ypu remove auch iron from your organs?

I used turmeric, green tea, IP6 btw meals, lactoferrin, cabbage in various forms, bragg ACV. I also followed the morley robbins protocol to repair the damages, and hardly ate any red meat. Thanks for sharing Kids Future. Interesting to hear about natural iron chelation methods and absorption prevention methods. For those not familiar, iron chelation refers to something that can help remove the iron already stored in your body (such as tumeric) whereas other things such as calcium can prevent iron absorption in the first place. Any reason why you didn't want to undergo phlebotomy to reduce your iron levels?

super lucky you caught that before you aged further and continued to increase ferritin. i only have a single H63D mutation but in my 40s was elevating saturation. ferritin was still normal. even that was starting to increase my a1c and lower testosterone. blood donations a few times per year pulled that saturation right in line and like magic the other issues vanished. it's honestly easier and healthier to eat normally and just donate blood to manage iron ESPECIALLY if you have a pair of mutations, c282y, h63d or s65c. listening to your story it's HIGHLY likely you are a single gene carrier of one of the minor mutations either h63d {most common} or s65c. the fact your diet had that kind of an impact and some blood donations pulled you right in line is a good hint. it's how a lot of us celtic folks are. the history or iron overload traces back to the vikings which is why most all of us that have it are from the british isles / germany / holland / france right in that circle of the world. people who have 2 copies of c282y have it much harder. oh, if you haven't already noticed. if you bring your ferritin all the way down to 10 it's pretty likely you will have joint pain / fatigue that will normalize if you raise it to even 25 or so. everyone is different but 25-40 is my happy ferritin zone. at 10 i'm achey

I went through 3 theraputic philbotomies and hated it. I have bad veins and only one arm that's good for giving blood. The needle is big and I'm such a baby. Well long story short my ferritin levels went back to normal and things were ok. I don't have the gene for hereditary hemocromatosis so I'm not sure why this happened to me. Now I'm feeling awful again so I figure my levels are high again. 😬 I just need to find the root cause.

It's called "Iron Deficiency Anemia Due to High-dose Turmeric." It purportedly chelates with Fe. It seems a preferable alternative to weekly phlebotomies. Those were presumably high-circumin extracts. Also, Morley Robbins has a lot of stuff on the interaction of Cu, Fe & Mg.
