Awesome!! Thank you so much for sharing this!! I love seeing the Cork in use over the hemp clay, I can imagine how lovely that's going to be to live with, for sound as well as warmth. Looking forward to the next update

I know I can’t wait to get in there! I’m also going to try spraying cork granules and clay instead of hemp and clay.

Wow absolutely incredible I am very impressed with your attention to detail.

Thanks Wade, I really appreciate it when people notice the little things. Even tiny design details can make such a difference to the ease, cost and finish of a job.

Can I ask about your herd/binder mix? Im not familiar with clay binders :) super curious
@williamstanwix2 жыл бұрын
I was using powdered clay and the same ratio that I would use with lime binders so it was around about 1 part clay to 3.5 parts shiv/hurd by volume. But I put half the amount of water than I usually would with lime. I was using my spray machine so the actual ratio was about 40kg of powdered clay to 200litres of shiv/hurd.

Liking the sprockets! Are the cork boards just laid loose or are the layers stuck down?
@williamstanwix2 жыл бұрын
They are laid loose then I have screwed a 1”x2” counter batten over them to sandwich them down. Then the tiling batten gets nailed to the counter batten.

Is the blue material a vapour barrier? Is it installed directly on top of the cork?
@williamstanwix2 жыл бұрын
Hi, it’s a breathable membrane, it stops moisture entering the building from the outside but is very good at letting moisture from the inside escape. Yes I’ve installed it directly over the cork.

Hi Will, Why use clay powder instead of lime? Will hemp / Clay work for for walls and what is the difference in "U" values?
@williamstanwix2 жыл бұрын
Hi Steve, it’s mainly an embodied energy thing. Clay hasn’t been burnt and can be from the building site itself so it has a lot less embodied energy than lime. It’s not as resistant to the whether as lime and in a wall would probably want protecting with cladding rather than a render. I have used it in walls also and will be experimenting more with it as time goes in. In terms of thermal conductivity and U-values I had samples tested and they were the same as hemp lime at the same density. I recently did a build where we processed the clay spoil from site in my roller pan then used the resulting clay slip to spray hemp clay as the walls.
