HEMTT Tanker vs Tractor Sled Pull

The Lassen County Fairgrounds this year had a truck pull for the first time, and one guy who is local brought in a HEMTT tanker for the pull, and it was interesting to watch!
The HEMTT actually weighed more than the entire sled, still pretty funny! 1:25 if you want to skip straight to the pull.

I loved driving my HEMTTs. Requires skill to drive effectively with 8 wheels. I was an 88M stationed with an ammo squad in the Army, 1996-1999 Ft. Stewart, GA

Man0fMeans I drove them off & on for 12 years, the big mistake I see most often on KZbin is people hitting mudholes & obstacles too slowly. Secure any loose objects in the cab, buckle your seatbelt & cinch it tight, then FLOOR IT.

I dont think he even had the front axles engaged? This vintage HEMTT was running the Detroit 8V92 TS and made about 500 HP. The empty weight on the cargo version with Crane in the rear is 39K pounds and they have a max gross of 100K pounds. Great trucks to drive and I love cranes so its right up my alley! When the Govt. started releasing these trucks about 6 years ago around 40 of them were sold and OshKosh Defense stopped it by offering the Govt. an upgrade to brans new specs the trucks were Zero timed for a hare less than half the price of a New HEMTT, well that completely ceased the sale from the Govt of all HEMTT, PLS etc. I got luck and got one when they were first released. These are pretty rare vehicles in civilian hands and for a good one in full operational condition they are going for between 75K and 90K USD!

@Little Skull Big Brain That's slang for "differential lock", and in this case, referring to a way of locking the differential between right and left sides of each axle (thus there are four such locks on this truck because there are four drive axles). The locker ensures that both the right and left wheels on any given axle spin at the same speed regardless of differences in traction, not what you want for normal circumstances but a lifesaver when the going gets tough. THIS kind of differential lock is not to be confused with another kind, that which locks the differential which is present between a pair of tandem drive axles and thus makes sure both axles turn at the same speed regardless of traction differences (two of them on this truck, but just one on most heavy-duty trucks), OR the lock for the differential that is present between the front and rear drive trains on a truck with full-time all-wheel drive (many Oshkosh trucks have this feature but I'm not sure about this model). In all cases, the locks are NOT to be engaged except in conditions when traction is poor enough for wheels to slip.
@ericl2969
@ericl2969 4 жыл бұрын
@Little Skull Big Brain This is an entirely different thing than shifting the transfer case, and take note that even non- 4WD vehicles can have differential locks. But you are correct that engaging differential lock or locks (as the case may be) is usually done with an electric switch of some kind, and yes, this switch might control an air-pressure switch so that air pressure does the actual work. Diff-lock switches are on a control panel on the dashboard or headliner. On all-wheel-drive concrete trucks there can be as many as four or five diff locks (but fewer control switches than that), but on semi-trucks and dump trucks, often the only differential that can be locked is the one that's between the two powered rear axles (that differential is also called a "splitter" or "power divider"), but sometimes the differentials between right and left wheels can be locked as well.

You need your ears cleaned then.The M977-M985 & M977A2-M985A2 all had the two stroke 8V-92 TA.The M977A4-M985A4 only have the four stroke C-15 ACERT.You can literally tell the difference between a Detroit and Caterpillar because one screams and the other cackles.Also,the spare super singles on these trucks are one give away.If it has it's spare 53/1600×20 standing up and straight,then it's the variant with the Detroit,but if the tire is on top of the cab,then it has the Caterpillar.The variations with the Caterpillars also have large hydraulic cooling fans.
