I live in Canada & leave the hens & chicks in the ground all winter. They do fine & always grow more in spring. In pots they can die in a deep freeze & terra cotta pots will break. Hope this helps.

I'm in Eastern Ontario. Do you think it would be fine if I left mine outside? I'm zone 5.
@gabrieleweidhuner57275 жыл бұрын
@@jenno482 I've left mine out for a number of years. I live north of Toronto. As long as they are in the ground & not in pots they've done fine. A bit of clean up is required I spring & they grow back like crazy. Hope this helps.

Freezing may cause terracotta to break if left outside. Any hens and chicks I have in terracotta pots I dig a hole, remove hens from pot and plant in the ground. Any in plastic. I plant in the ground without removing from the pot. They will overwinter just fine. In the Spring, pull them up and repot. Enjoy them again. I'm in New Jersey.
@tammysjungle70645 жыл бұрын
I do the same thing! And you are correct, terracotta will crack/break in the cold.

From Detroit area definitely agree with put them in the ground and winter over. Put your terra cotta in a garage or covered porch to warm up or they will crack. ❤your channel

If you want to try a cold hearty cactus, check out the eastern prickly pear! It’s an actual cactus that survives harsh winters. I found a massive overgrown patch of them near me and I took a bunch of pad cuttings, rooted them and now I have my own little prickly pear patch here in Pennsylvania

Hey 🌱🌿🌱 Most hen and chicks are cold hardy -20° - -30° so yours should be fine. Your terra cotta may bust but the plants will do great! I plant mine in the ground after years of busted pots. Hope this helps! Hope you and the family have a fantastical 2020 😁🌱🌿🌱😁

Good morning Nicole, I had hen and chicks that I got from a friend, and I think that I didn't properly take care of them in the summer so it didn't prepare them for the coming winter, I had them for a couple of years and they did great and came back even in my sometimes -18 degree winters. I had a pot that I did plant them in and it was a terra cotta one, they did dry out I think too much and during the winter the pot got cracks because the weather will freeze and break terra cotta, so my next try will be to put them in something besides terra cotta maybe even plant them directly in the ground and mulch around them to protect them better, they are really a hardy little plant and are suppose to be cold tolerant up to -20 and -30. I love your channel and I am looking forward to the coming year, I love different content and all the things you do on your channel. Thank you so much for everything and I hope you have a wonderful weekend and I look forward to the next video, love and hugs to you, bye for now.

Hi Nicole, I would leave the dead leaves on the plant, they provide some insulation from ice, wind and snow.

My hen and chicks have done great outside. Where the problem is going to be is with your pots. They have a tendency to break in a deep freeze. If your ground isn't frozen, you might want to put them in the ground. You could call your local nursery and ask them. Have a Happy New Year!!

Yes! You can leave hen and chicks out! Put them in an area that is protected if you can. I’d leave the dried leaves on until spring. The occasional squirrel will dig in the pots and mess around but that’s it. The old dried leaves provide protection from the elements and the sun will warm them even on cold days. Have a great New Year🤩🤩🤩

The one you thought was done and left it as is I think just needs to be divided into maybe three pots. It is over crowded . Well my guess and what I would do for it. Adding I bury my potted hens and chicks bots down into piles of sawdust and pull them out in spring. Snow here so no way to photo.
@Plantastica5 жыл бұрын
You can leave them planted in the ground and they spread like mad. I don't know how they'll do in a little pot like that, though, without any insulation. You may want to at least bring them into the garage. They are amazing little succulents. I'd have a yard full of them and cold hardy cacti if i didn't rent!!

Hey Nicole. The hen and chicks won't make it inside. Leaving them outside, they go dormant, then in spring they wake up and start growing again. Place your plastic pots against the house for shelter and cover with your leaves from your yard. Terracotta will crack/break replace it with a plastic one for the winter.

Love your 2020 channel ideas! Manic Monday is a great idea although hopefully you will not have 52 plants that you are struggling with this year! And I agree with all the other commenters about Hen & Chicks being a perennial in your zone but only as a ground cover not in a clay pot. My aunt did grow hers inside for years in a bright sun room in the NW burbs of Chicago so might not be a bad idea to bring it in.

I think our 2020 opening is AWESOME! My 2 Hen n Chicks did not make it! They both died, like a dead doornail, I wanted to bring them back, alas I live in AZ & I think they died a rather omnious tombstone death...too much sun & not enough water! Tumbleweed weather! Don't get me wrong...it snowed here this morning, but if they are a hardy plant in soil that is already planted & formed roots...I say leave em. Peace & Chicken Grease! Oh, sounds great about your plan (t)s. :)

I am by no means an expert, but hen and chicks are sempervivum and are a hardy succulent ,they can live all year long outside. They can be grown successfully in doors or out. While I believe echeveria which includes string of pearls and other succulents are a tender succulent and would not strive outside year round. I looked it up, but I guess I did not know hen and chicks could be grown indoors. Because succulents need a lot sun I’m thinking most of them are going to get leggy indoors unless you can provided them with the light they need. I’m not sure what’s going on with your hen and chicks in the plastic pot, they may have gotten too wet or they may be the echeveria species. I think you are able to tell them apart by the leaves, echeveria are a thicker more succulent type leaf and sempervivum are a thinner leaf. In any case it said that hen and chicks can be grown indoors or out.💚🙃

I have such problems with hen and chicks😩 They always grow leggy. I keep them in a South facing window and only water when completely dry. It's so frustrating because they're my favorite succulent.
@annetteprice5 жыл бұрын
A grow light will help with that if you’re willing to take that leap. I had a sempervivum in a succulent dish garden in a south-facing window as well and it was getting leggy. I got a grow light in October for that garden and everything is so happy and growing nicely compact now, after just a few months. Some of the newer lights are just like regular bulbs and much easier to use. You do have to have the lights quite close. I have mine about a foot above the dish.
