@JCole-fg3rr4 жыл бұрын
Conor McSmith Serena was up 4-2, 30-0 in the third set. Serena served a first serve, and Justin held her hand up as soon as Serena made contact with the ball. Serena’s first serve went in the net, and the umpire called second serve. Serena tried to explain to him that it was still a first serve because Justine had her hand up. The umpire said he didn’t see it, and Serena pressed it, and asked Justine to speak up and she wouldn’t own up to it. The crowd then started booing Serena for every fault, unforced error, or anytime Serena got fired up. Serena was never the same after that. Serena won one more game in the last set. Serena was extremely shaken after the match and broke down in tears, calling Justine a cheat and a liar. Justine did play well, but it clearly changed the outcome of the match because up until that point, Serena was on fire and was not missing. She was on track to go up 5-2. It is sad that they removed the commentary. Then in 2011, Justine did an interview where she admitted that she cheated against Serena here in 2003, and that she cheated against Clijsters too in the 2004 Australian Open. Justine said the reason why she did that too Serena was too stand tall against her and prove she couldn’t be pushed around. I’ll link two articles for you. www.tennis.com/pro-game/2011/02/henin-regrets-hand-incident-with-serena/27977/ larrybrownsports.com/tennis/justine-henin-addresses-hand-incident-with-serena-williams/55290

she could. her average groundstroke speeds were nearly identical to Serena’s - and both players hit to significantly faster sports than Davenport, Sharapova or Clijsters. Henin and Serena were /two of *five players/ to hit over 90mph at Wimbledon in the 2000s, doing this multiple times on the forehand. Even on serve there wasn’t a significant difference on average 1st and 2nd serve speeds, Henin having one of the very biggest serves on the tour - if not always reliable (a product of *constantly changing the service motion, imho). Henin’s fastest serve was 122mph + typically at its heaviest c. 2005 - 2006.

The French crowd are the rudest, most racists of the 4 Grand Slams. Serena was leading 2-6, 6-4, 4-2 and 30-0 when they started their heckling and booing. Henin added to the controversy, when she questioned a line call that was clearly out. The crowd thought otherwise and booed the umpire's call which favoured Serena. This was during the era where Serena could commit many errors and still win. Largely because of her serve and foot speed. As she has become slower she relies far more on tactics then overpowering. Justine had the talent to really get her in strange positions while also hitting winners. On clay, that is a winning combination against Serena. She has always struggled against all-around players. I wish Justine had admitted what she did during the moment but history is written. Not the most beautiful match but the level of fight was extremely high from both. Justine Henin was a cheater. It's sad because she was good enough to win on her own and she is definitely one of the female greats, but this was her breakout win and she cheated to get it. Sad that the crowd didn't care about it and gave Serena grief, but the world still remembers. Henin wasn't known for her sportsmanship and anytime world wide tennis' sweetheart and beloved fellow countryman Kim Clijsters doesn't care too much for you, something is wrong.

I watched this match live when it happened and I am most sure that Serena did not see the hand and was not actually disturbed by it. The umpire should have seen it and called a repetition of 1st serve. That's not exactly a cheat. After all, Serena Williams broke Justine Henin's serve when Justine was serving 5 - 4 up at the 3rd Set and even so she didn't win the match after all. Henin has beaten S. Williams in many occasions and I don't think she needed any cheat in order to win this match. Serena Williams was and still is a big drama queen, besides being an incredible champion. My opinion, ok!

It is the umpire's job to call it, not the players. Fair play is nice of course, but Justine is not wrong in pointing out that in the heat of the battle on court you often act out of instinct. That's why there is an umpire in the first place. He didn't do his job well on this occasion.
