Imagine being 5-2 down in the final set of a grand slam semifinal. Crowd going nuts and cheering for your opponent. And you fight your way back, point by point -- through cramps. Never once complaining or whining, just did her job at an extraordinary level. Unforgettable class by JH. She is one of my all time faves.

Unfortunately Hawkeye wasn't officially part of tennis rules, it was purely for tv viewers, trouble is it's based on a 2 dimensional circle but if you actually placed the ball a few mm still on the line it looks ridiculously out & really is. I think a certain limit over needs to be looked at.

@@katerinapatiniotis5598 You are clearly delusional. 1. The original comment referred to Serena's mental toughness. Despite her recent losses in Slams, she is known for her mental fortitude throughout her career. She has won a record 32 matches after saving match points and won 4 of her Slams having saved match points in route to the title. In addition to that, she managed to come back to the top three times after falling out of the top 100. 2. Serena is absolutely not the "worst" role model. She had three isolated arguments with umpires throughout a 22 year long career. She is the only player on the WTA apart from Kim Clijsters who hugged each and every single opponent who beat her in a Slam final.

Great match, one that Capriati lost because of what I perceive as a lack of respect for her opponent. It shows in her attitude, it shows in the way she shakes her hand,... and that's IMHO the same reason why she never became the great player she had the potential to be. It feels like she was trained to play tennis as if it were a sport you can play without factoring in the opponent. As if victory only depended on the way she played. This mindset works up to a certain point. Up to a point when you meet opponents that have a deeper understanding of the true nature of the game.

I know what you mean, but Capriati had a fighting spirit that could come across as disrespectful to her opponents, even when not intended. Epic match. Hard to believe that people still complain about the one point where Serena should have gotten a first serve and got only a second serve at their French Open semi that year while Henin was basically robbed of points in this US Open semi here because Capriati put so much pressure on the umpire. Serena did not lose in the French Open because she did not got the one first serve she should have but because Henin was the better clay court player. And Henin did not lose here although she was robbed of points here because she toughed it out.

Hennin had arguably the most complete game in the history of tennis. Her mental discipline/composure under pressure, tremendous sportsmanship and just sheer damned tenacity was second-to-none. An absolute pocket rocket powerhouse! I was a massive Henin fan back in the day and was totally gutted the day she announced her retirement....first and second time! 🤣 Capriati behaved like a brat, always did and sadly never matured from what I gather. She had a successful career but I also believe she squandered a lot of opportunities and that (not even) half-hearted handshake at the end of this match was disgusting. The only thing that really plagued Henin throughout her career were the endless double-faults, she could never seem to match her power with accuracy during service. Unfortunately for our American brethren across the pond, every time Henin hit a double-fault this New York crowd confirmed yet again & again that they are one of the most ungracious & unsportsmanlike audiences in the world. It’s one thing to cheer for your home player, it’s quite another to cheer/boo/harass an opposing player every time they make a mistake. A carbon copy of this behaviour was when Haley beat S. Williams in the final. Absolutely vile behaviour and a real shame as this doesn’t reflect the majority of Americans.

Tremendous sportsmanship? Hilarious. She was actively disliked by the majority of WTA players for her lack of sportsmanship. Notable examples include cheating against Serena Williams in the semi-final of the 2003 French Open and against fellow countrywoman Kim Clijsters in the final of the 2004 Australian Open. Also, she disgracefully retired midway through a Grand Slam final in 2006 while she was getting her ass handed to her by Mauresmo, spoiling her first Grand Slam victory. Sheer tenacity? She wasn't very tenacious when she gave up in 2008 due to loss of motivation even though she was ranked #1 at the time.

I don't know who the second commentator is but I disgaree with her at 05:36 Just because you hit the ball extremely hard does not mean you are extremely aggressive. In my opinion there are three main things I saw why Jennifer kept losing US Open semifinals: 1. Jennifer hit off the backfoot too often for my liking 2. Backed off attacking short midcourt balls and often scurried back ot the baseline 3. Played far too emotional and not with her head. Jennifer played too passive, not extremely agressive. Here is a perfect example of what she was prone to do at 01:53 In a strong positioon inside the baseline, got back two floating balls which she could easily have come in and put away a volley, and ended up losing the point. The interesting thing about that is how many modern players ended up playing this way, simply not able to take the initaitive due to insecurity about going forward, hence so many endless long rallies today. I don't know whether Jennifer choked as a lot of people say she did in 2003 and 2004 against Dementieva, perhaps she did. But there is no question Jennifer simply did not take the initative often enough to go in for the kill on many points, and definitely many important points. Who was the commentator with Dave Luddy? I got the impression she is an ex player. I am a bit bemused how an ex player would throw the word "aggressive" around so willy nilly. I remember reading a quote after her 1991 US Open semifinal loss to Seles where Jennifer said she wished she played more aggressive, so she understood even as a young teenager she needed to take the initaive more in big matches, but unfortunately often wasn't able to do it at the US Open.

Henin became an amazing player because of Venus and Serena hands down. To be on their level you had to bring your best. Henin was one of the rarities in that she brought her best not only against them but the rest of the field lol I can't say the same for other rivals or pretenders

Jennifer was a great player, but she never really grew up, and that very long hiatus probably cost her at least a few slams. Justine had to retire early because of a nagging elbow injury, and that and her first retirement probably cost her at least a few slams. Justine and Jennifer were two greats of the game, and either of them, playing like this, could be #1 today.

Navratilova, Graff, Hingis, Seles, Capriati, Venus, Serena, Clijsters, Henin, Mauresmo, Kournikova, Sharapova, Davenport ... WTA used to have sooooo many ballers back in the day. So sad to see the current state of it where it's just Serena and everyone else.
