In the mid 50s a $5 bill has about the same purchasing power as $75 does today. They were backed by silver. Inflation was practically tame then because of the silver backing

I have a 1839 half dollar coin that was left to me from my grandmother's collection. I sent it to PCGS for grading. It was returned ungraded , with a note that it was " counterfeit " PCGS would not put a grade On the coin. To me it appears as a " BU " quality coin, but I can not grade coins. A friend said to save It because there is a market for counterfeit coins I still have it, but, PCGS will return counterfeit coins ungraded.

I have 2 Henning nickels one is the 46 and one is the 53 . I got one from my uncle and one from my grandfather whom both lived in the same area as Henning and both worked in machine shops as steel workers

Not sure if I will get a response back, but have to ask aren't there 1939, 1944, 1946, 1947 and 1953 nickels without the mint mark? The weight of a Henning nickel should weigh 5.4 grams right? A regular NO MINTMARK nickel from these dates is 5.0 so there are regular nickels from these dates that are not Henning. Just curious Thanks

Another interesting historical story worth looking at is the Manchin Mills coins. Believe it or not I found or it found me, a 1788 Manchin Mills copper Vlack 2 23 88a halfpenny just yesterday in a 10000 lb truckload of recycle that came into work. It fell out on the floor as it went off the scale. All excited I had found my oldest British coin maybe even a Colonial one. I looked all day and could never match the front with a correct reverse. It didn't make any sense. Finally I stumbled across the "Manchin Mills" coin story. What an amazing piece of US/British history. One I would never known. How fortunate was I to have this coin jump out at me? If you don't know the story of the "Manchin Mills" coins please please look it up. You won't be disappointed. Thank you for the Hennings story.

Thats awesome! I have a Roman coin from 200AD-ish and it is an olddd counterfeit. It was made in 200AD by a roman that was poor enough to risk making a fake. I love when coins have/could have a history/story.

When I was very young and a new collector into numismatics I encountered this very counterfeit in my pocket change. When I checked it in the Redbook and found it to be counterfeit my older brothers told me it was illegal to own so I spent it. A similar thing happened to me then again in the early 70s I received a counterfeit 1923D mercury dime. When I found it was counterfeit also I got rid of it thinking it would bring only hardship on me and my family. What are the chances of encountering both of these interesting pieces in one lifetime out of pocket change no less. I wish I knew then what I know now, but that won’t be the first time I had that feeling. Everyone keep searching, you just never know.

BlueRidge: I have been interested in coins for awhile now. Have been listening to you and really appreciate your knowlege. I am a novice but trying to learn all I can. Have had change lying around for years. I have a 1939 that meets all criteria of a Henning but not the R loop. I also have a 1946 that does the same without the R loop. Neither have mint marks. Can I assume they are Hennings? They both look like Hennings. My daughter can list on Ebay. What would you list them for? Just an educated guess, please, especially the 1946. It's not the copper creek in NJ. It's the Cooper river in South Jersey. I've detected south Jersey since the early 80's and I have a jug of 38 to 59 nickels being I saved everything pre 1960. Some are way off in color and I assumed it was the ground causing but now I found out there weren't just the 1944's so I have to go through them. Most of them have a looped R on the reverse but they all weigh over 5 grams where no authentic nickel can. They were 5 grams but weigh slightly lighter from wear. They are selling from 100 to 300 on eBay if it's not heavily worn out

Shaun are thought the only dates for sure? I found a 1943 with a mm above the dome but I found it to sound funny on the drop test and its all around appearance was off to me being a seasoned roll hunter. So I took it to my lcs and had it metal tested with the test gun and was completely shocked that the test 4 times came back the same .. 50.92 silver, 46.19 copper, 2.42 magnesium and .47 other Ferris metals and it slightly sticks to a magnet it also has the mark in the R In E purpose unim.. I'm believing this could be a very very rare Is Henning nickel.. I would like to send you pictures but I don't know what email address to use.. thanks for your time buddy. 🙏

In the mid 70s I used to bend it with my hands (how stupid) to show my friends it was fake...assumed it was lead...But its weight is 1 1/2 gram less 4.76 grams same size and thickness as my 1936 quarter. Prior to watching this video I had no knowledge of this counterfeit nickel. It's peaked my curiosity because many years ago I bought an old bracelet at a yard sale that somebody made. They didn't damage the nickels it had by drilling holes in them but instead they used circular mounts(I don't know what the correct name is)but they go around the edges of coins almost like a frame that has a loop or jump ring on the top so the coins can be worn on a chain or whatever. The reason I say I had, as in past tense, is because I took it apart to get the 3 or 4 nickels out of it because I found it too gaudy for my taste. I have to dig those nickels out and have a better look at them. The reason I saved them is they were dates of war nickels but none contained a mint mark. I didn't understand why anyone would've taken the time and effort to make a bracelet with those coins so I just put them away and always wondered about them. Imagine if they're the Henning nickels you speak about in this video. Thank you for teaching me how to identify them.

@@BlueRidgeSilverhound thank you Sir. Your a total class act. I have been searching boxes of nickles, one a week. I guess about two years since you got me started on silver and complete steps. I started rolling any thing 1982 or earlier. I just used the copper line in pennys as a bench mark unless the quality is perfect its back to the bank to get new rolls. Time to pull out some old stock. Thank you again.
