I really love the "Sale of Gold in the Last Days of the Kuomintang, Shanghai, China, 1949". It shows how he managed to get a good composition in a very challenging crowded scene.

Thanks for your comments on Bresson, I'm a true fan of his work. Most historical photographers are famous for just one image.Traveling put him in the right place right time making him famous for many images.

In recent years most people focus too much on technical aspects of photography and tend to forget the most important... the emotional aspect. This separates craft from art.

I don't know where to start. I've been to photography since the beginning of the 80's. Since the very beginning I tried street photography. I wanted my photos to be real and not directed and at that time there were no privacy issues and hardly any cameras around. My first photos are from the old city in Jerusalem. Right after I started photography I embarked on a trip to Europe. One evening while photographing in Basel I run into an old man who took me home and showed me a book of Cartier Bresson. This photo you talked about at the end of the video, the boy with the wine bottles became instantly one of my all time favorites. Since then HCB is streaming in my veins. I have several books of him and visited a few of his exhibitions and for me he is a spiritual mentor. A few year subsequently, I shoot in Jerusalem my own version of the boy with the bottles, this time he carries an egg carton on his head. I call this photo “Eggotrip” I'm planing my own exhibition but because of the corona crisis I might do it through youtube. My exhibition is “Eyes wide shout” because I'm also very verbal (wrote and shoot my own articles in Finland's biggest magazines) I'd like to combine words and photos. Thanks for the great video!

i don't have a website but i do have a very poor instagram account. i joined instagram a couple of months ago. the reason i didn't join earlier was my promiss to my youngest daughter that i won't join instagram and embaress her. LOL! i don't really cope with instagram. in my facebook accounrt by the same name you can find much more. i think i'll let you know when i'll make the video. that's the best solution. @@aboutphotography

My favourite photo by HCB is the last one, the little boy carrying the wine bottles. I think this is because it is imperfect, so it's sort of a natural, everyday snapshot catching the wonderful emotion of the little boy, it's not a cliché. He's looks so proud and full of fun.

@@aboutphotography It's the photo taken of a former concentration camp guard who is standing beside a table. At the table are sitting some authorities. In front of the guard who is obviously ashamed of what she had done while being a guard, is a woman whose anger is beginning to swell. Her furor and hurt is all over the expression on her face. Once seen, it's hard to forget.

So if he was documenting life at anything was he really a street photographer or a documentary photographer ? And he didn't consider himself to be that ? I dislike the term Street photography Garry Winogrand said it says nothing of who you are .
@aboutphotography4 жыл бұрын
Mahmood R Thomas Yeah, I don’t think he would say himself I am this or that kind of photographer. I would say Street photography is a genre where you can probably just put someone who meets some kind of criteria. For me the street photographer is someone who is wondering streets and making photographs for the purpose of making them (like a fine art) and documentary photograph maybe someone like W. E. Smith who has an aim and shoots the photographs for the purpose of making an essay or documenting some issue etc. So in the end putting someone in some kind of box is usually according to his most famous work. I mean it is not like Cartier-Bresson Or Capa never shot portraits but I would not say they were portrait photographers. I guess there is no hard line between documentary and street photography. But for me when I look at the Behind the Gara St. Lazare it seem to be an example of street photography since it is just a “decisive moment” not connected to anything else. With Capa for example when you look at his Falling Soldier it is a part of bigger project documenting the war in Spain. But thats just how I feel that. I hope that makes sense :D
