Finally, after many years, I was able to find a channel that doesn't show a kid right out of the diapers, repeating street photography rules that were said decades ago, showing off their latest gear but not one single useful word about art. Thank you so much for giving quality references and presenting these artists with the respect they deserve. I hope it serves as a true inspiration to newcomer photographers and that it teaches them to look at the images that are everywhere instead of keep looking at their gear.

You have done a masterful job with Saul Leiter, capturing both style and technique. The atmosphere of colors, frames, and reflections is reminiscent of the master you are attempting to emulate. I think this is one of your best efforts in imitative photography.

Another excellent video. There are so many KZbin photography charlatans, self-labelled street photography 'experts' and vloggers with hundreds of thousands of subscribers who only ever produce very average work accompanied by crappy video content. The influence they hold frustrates me when there are far better and more educational channels like yours out there. The time and effort you spend both researching and then photographing, not to mention editing, is to be commended. Yours is one of those channels all photographers should watch, be they experienced or new because, if nothing else, you inspire us to go out and experiment. Keep up the great work.

I am a landscape photographer living in a small town in Alaska, so this is all pretty far from my wheelhouse, but I am always looking for ways to cross-pollinate, hoping that I can find and take shots that are different and unique. I really love finding inspiration from photographers whose style is completely different than mine. I appreciate your introduction to Leiter and the way you breakdown and attempt to shoot like him. Very engaging and informative. I will subscribe and watch more!

Mate, I forwarded this video to my friends and told them to watch all the videos on this channel. Instead of just watching all the videos, they went out after this one and filled up my WhatsApp with their Saul Leiter photos, and I'm surprised at how good the photos are!! You're an absolute inspiration and a wonderful teacher. Thanks for taking the time to show us new perspectives in photography. I know we have books and the internet to help us, but you go outside and practice what you preach, which is a great help to be able to find those kinds of shots. You're fabulous 😁👍

Wow, you can waste so much time on youtube photography videos, but this video was 25 minutes of absolute value. Thank you so much for creating it. I bought the book The Unseen by Saul Leiter and I'll admit it left me kind of cold (I'll also admit I only looked at the pictures so far). But this video has added so much more depth to my understanding of his abstract work and you have inspired me to take more photos. Brilliant work, I'm now off to check out the rest of your videos.

That was fascinating. I'd never been introduced to the work of Saul Leiter before and would like to thank you for correcting that. Your explorative journey was enthralling. I thoroughly enjoyed your descriptions of what you were seeing and how you hoped to use those elements. I think that although you made a very fine fist of reproduction, some images I found really engaging, Saul had an ingredient you couldn't emulate, style. Not yours but that of the people he was photographing. Those clothes just flowed around the images that modern street clothing cannot achieve. Mildly amused that puritans reached Canada. I thought they had been stopped by the roughly 49th Parallel, somehow :).

This is what photography content should be. On the off chance you and The Photographic eye dont know each other (or a comment looker isnt familiar) I honestly think you two are the very best youtube photography channels. Just sharing your passion and knowledge and reverence, and making me feel like im geeking out with a fellow camera nerd. Not to mention making me, self confidence issues and all, feel like I CAN shoot like Leiter, someone I admire deeply. And, lastly, *especially* not telling everyone the gear doesnt matter immediately before an ad read for a Canon R3 and the corresponding 24-70 for it. 🙄 every time I see basically every channel do that my heart breaks for new photographers. Newbies if you see this, just get the camera you can afford. You don't need $10,000 of camera equipment. Use what you can and shoot for the love of it. Hell, the film camera I use was just one I was given for free in an upcycle group. Ask around, people are generous and kind. Youre doing a really great thing here, thank you. Im actually on mt way to downtown right now (also live in Pittsburgh, just like Leiter!) Your video inspired me to go shoot and see what I can do. Leiter has always been in my top 3 but seeing a breakdown of his style like this just did so much for me. A thousand thanks 💜

A great video, Saul Leiter's work makes me wish I could have lived in those times for some reason. But the job of any photographer, hobbyist or professional, is to document the world as it is when they are alive. Leiter certainly did this to perfection. Keep up the great work.

Bravo. Leiter is my favorite photographer. But I seem to be overwhelmed when i think of trying to do something similar. You really nailed a few shots, that looked a lot like Leiter's work. Especially the red umbrella, but I have a feeling you knew that (by placing it last on the list of photos you took). You could have used the Picture Styles on your Canon to emulate expired film, but perhaps that was beyond the scope of your project. Keep the videos coming!

i feel like now in 2024 with street photography you cant really make a lot of money compared to like wedding or like being a content creator but that also means that street photographers are in it purely for taking photos instead of selling a product or selling to clients, its purely for the love of the art form and the puzzle in your head trying to figure out what might be a nice photo

What’s interesting about this video is that it shows how technique is only part of the equation. The imitation of Leiter’s methods and preferences seems to be spot on, yet I wouldn’t take any of the decent resulting images for Leiter’s work. There’s something about his imagination and nature that gives his images a uniqueness that can’t be replicated. Still, it’s useful to see the difference.

Thank you so much for introducing me to Saul Leiter! I am a photographer and will admit, I don't follow much if any photographer outside of one - Jim Brandenburg. I've loved Wolves since I was young. He is a master at that. But he's also someone that didn't take conventional shots. Which attracted me even more. Now, this is something that is more MY style. I look forward to learning more about Mr. Leiter. And becoming more of one to go into oblivion. 😉 Your winter shots from above got me emotional. Made me a little homesick for Chicago. This video has messed with me. I was out on the town last night, and I caught myself checking the reflections to see what interesting things I could frame into the dark patches, if I leaned one way or the other. I've taken photos for decades....but maybe I haven't been a photographer. Not like this. It's like I've been looking for shots, but I haven't really been *seeing* what's in front of me. I'm...quietly, fundamentally, insistently; astounded. I was looking at my shower curtains differently, the fog in my bathroom mirror differently. As I get more years, I think...I've never had a grasp on the fundamentals, like this, at all. Thank you for making this one. I have to pointedly meditate on it.

Believe it or not, but I learnt about Saul Leiter this morning, thanks to AI... First - during quite a creative conversation about photography - ChatGPT suggested I should check his works. Then, thanks to some of my Chrome search results 'leaking' into YT, I've found your channel. Once I've heard that real photographers look for the light coming through the things. Mr Leiter was certainly one of them. I wonder what some photo handbooks would say about the histogram of his "Canopy";) You've created such a mood in your video, that makes me wanna fly and cry at the same time. Concentrating on seeing, shooting, filming, privacy and safety at the same time must have been quite challenging. Thank you, extremely well done!

Awesome video. Could you imagine if Instagram was around in Saul’s day? He would have been Instagrammed to oblivion, No one in that era would have liked his photos. The greatest artists in history were often under appreciated while they were alive. It would have been interesting to see what picture Saul would have taken if he grew up in a sunny beachside location. I loved your Canadian joke regarding the mulled wine. to anyone in the community here that really know cameras well, can you please suggest me what camera I should look into based on my ideas. I want to do with video, cinema what is shown in this channel by photography... Please hear me out. I have looked into camcorders like the Panasonic HC-X2 as well as Cinema cameras like the Sigma FP or Black Magic's upcoming pocket L format camera for 2023 or their Pocket 6 K camera... But I know too little of all the modern day tech to tell what camera is best on doing what I want, so here I am asking around in hope of hearing what people that worked with cameras a lot more than me think might be the right choice, this is what I aim to do: I see that many cameras no matter they are camcorders or cinema cameras today cost about the same on this level we are talking now... What I want to do is poetic documentary work .. I am very fascinated by Alexey Titarenko, though he was a photographer not a videographer and lived in a past time... I also like the documentary, "The Fog of War" I like to make documentaries based on the Poetic Mood, with much symbolism. So, I like to use graphics, animations, maps, charts, or diagrams to explain complex or abstract concepts, show data or statistics but in a symbolic style and not in to me a cold and borring news piece way... I want to create transitions mixed with slowmotion of people in protests, arguments or neglect of each other's point of view, showing empathy vs non-empathy in people's actions towards each other. I like to show in motion and not tell. When I have the details of people's facial emotions as well as slow motions and long exposure on video just like Alexey Titarenko but now on video and not in still photo, I like to then use music, sound effects, or ambient noise to create atmosphere, emotion, and contrast. I am a trained actor and started a master in documentary film production that I never finished, so I got some knowledge of those things from an academic standpoint and so like to also use voice-over narration, text, or subtitles to provide additional information, context, or commentary to what happens between people, show mass hysteria or mass control. I want people, the audience to see how people are being used and ask themselves what they want, ask them if they believe they can live without polarisation and politics. I understand is an ambitious goal, so I want to just start small catching a minute here and there when out and about in town to train my own tech ability to catch it on camera, just like the Russian photographer did, but instead make like ten second video on long exposure or abstract motion just like in the video here... but what cinema or camcorder camera can do long exposure? .... making my work so close to that Russian photographer that I can find the perfect shutter speed on video to mimic the style of Alexey Titarenko? kzbin.info/www/bejne/d33akpuBidp9nLs as well as doing normal poetic mood video / film work to nicely catch facial emotions of a person standing out in a crowd of a protest? thanks to anyone for getting back, I know too little of all the tech in cameras today. I had my university training in journalism, documentary work and acting in early 2000 and since then I have not touched cameras. I see a lot has happened since we had tape cassettes in our broadcast camcorders when I did my internships in the Washington Bureau and other places working in Capital Hill and similar areas catching human rights work, news and reportage... so now I wanna start again, but with more in-depth documentary work in a more cinema like , poetic style... So I am asking around on KZbin now to those that work with the latest cameras and understand art in motion to understand better what might be the right camera for my ideas. thanks for hearing me out! Kind regards, Christopher / Sweden

The video equivalent to long exposure would probably be a time lapse. Are you familiar with the work of Ron Fricke? If not I'd recommend watching Koyaanisqatsi for a similar poetic mood. But I think it will be difficult to get across pointed messages like the intricacies of political manipulation with such work. I feel like when you want to achieve a poetic mood, it's important to be subtle with any messaging. What I mean is for example Titarenko didn't use text or subtitles to explain the misery of the Soviet collapse. He let his images speak for themselves. I feel like once people are told what to think they instinctively turn their brains off to it. As for cameras well I would first define the specifics of what you want to achieve before dropping several thousands of dollars into equipment. Any modern digital camera and a tripod can do time lapses.

Very nice, thank you. Retired 70 year old here, photo hobbyist in the 70's and 80's, was going to pick up a camera again, but digital menus turn me off. I will check your other videos out, thanks again!

Maybe I haven't seen enough videos on KZbin or read enough. But this is the first time I've seen a breakdown of how someone took their photos. Great stuff!

Great video, very informative. I was not familiar with Saul Leiter before, but you've inspired me to research his work. Were you using manual lenses? If so how did you deal with the lack of an exposure simulation setting on the Eos M?

Yes I was using two manual lenses. It's not shown in the video but I usually took a few test shots and then adjusted settings based off of that exposure. Luckily I was shooting digitally so didn't have to worry about wasting shots. You can also use one of those external light meters. I have one from Reveni Labs I use sometimes.

This was really well done. I also have that Pentax 135mm it was nice to see that familiar focus barrel lining up some leiter inspired shots. Inspiring:)

I love the build quality of the lens and the rendering is quite nice, although when shooting on film at that focal length it makes you miss some of the modern features on telephoto lenses like vibration reduction.
