Trombone Concerto (1956)
I. Andante et Scherzo-Valse [0:00]
II. Nocturne [8:14]
III. Tambourin [13:28]
A concerto for trombone and orchestra by French composer Henri Tomasi (1901-1971). This work in three movements is very French in character, at times somewhat impressionistic. It is notable for its elegance, dance rhythms and evocation of popular and street music. The third movement Tambourin is a lively French dance in duple meter, a form used often by Baroque and Classical composers such as Rameau and Grétry.
Trombonist: Jörgen van Rijen
Conductor: Ed Spanjaard
Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra

I really like how he handled the introduction. He’s one of the few trombonists I’ve personally heard who doesn’t rush through it but instead really savors it. Very musical! As is the rest of the performance.

I have to learn this for a competition now. If I sound even 1/4 as good as Jorgen, I’ll be quite happy.

I'll be honest, I love hearing stuff like that. It's one little mishap in a fantastic performance, and it just doesn't phase him at all. I really enjoy Jorgen's playing.

That high D in Movement II. Any trombonist that can hit that note so beautifully truly is a masterful musician.

It's a Bach 42A. I have the one with the gold brass bell and the lightweight slide. Spectacular. The Hagmann valve works like a charm :)

@@yrockerboy yah the first movement is vaguely reminiscent of Tommy Dorseys “getting sentimental over you” and was actually written for Dorsey to play it but sadly that never happened. As far as the ii-v-I’s the piece also follows a very strict chromatic pattern so focusing on the chromatic movement ends up being highly important. Sorry for nerding out on you but these are just some tips I have for this piece and one of my favorite parts of it are the large spaces for your own interpretation. Have fun!
