Henry Avery: The King of Pirates (Pirate History Explained)

Henry Avery was only on the seas for 2 years, but in that short space of time he racked up one of the biggest hauls that any pirate has ever seen. While legends like Blackbeard and Bartholomew Roberts spring to mind when speaking about pirates, it's funny that Henry Avery who made more money than the pair of them, seldom shares the spotlight.

Avery was extremely successful for one important reason: He knew when to quit. Most pirates tried to make pillaging and plundering a lifelong career, but like modern criminal trades once you’re in hot pursuit you either call it quits and try to make a break or you get caught. Avery made a break with his fortune once the Royal Navy was on his tail and I wouldn’t be surprised if he did establish his own short lived country on Madagascar, micronations popped in and out of existence all the time back then. Piracy in the Golden Age was a lot like modern criminal trades in other ways as well, pirates who managed to grow old as pirates and made it a lifelong career usually did so by bribing law enforcement and politicians (like the Mexican and Brazilian drug cartels), but they usually wouldn’t amass as large of a fortune as Avery did once the expenses of paying the crew and typically large and frequent bribes were taken into account. In fact most of these types just saw it as a job and some became privateers. Many pirates would have rather preferred just have been privateers in fact, one of the contributing factors to the “Golden Age” was that the British laid off a large portion of their naval sailors and privateers after the Spanish War of Succession, said sailors and privateers couldn’t find work and turned to piracy as a result. While the Golden Age ended a large part due to increasing naval presence in the Caribbean it also ended partially because it became easier for sailors to find legitimate work again (again this is a pattern seen with many modern illegal trades).

Ever since I was a kid I loved Treasure Island the and romance of piracy. Here's a pirate poem I wrote and recently had published. Another Volley Roar It started as a pleasant day for a sail. A scarlet cloaked sky shaded many colors. A bad omen for any decent Merchant. A sound breaks the still silence, a mighty roar. Shiver me timbers! The vessel of a pirate! The deck quakes, a cannonball has struck the ship. “Man, battle stations!” cries the captain of our ship. Men scurry about the deck, some manning the sail. Shots. A sailor smacks the deck --shot by a pirate. Yet nowhere in sight our Merchant. Another sailor jumps ship, aye, he’s shown his true colors. “Brace yourselves!” - Another volley roar! Their guns rage like a mighty lion roar. Of all the ways to die today, why at the hands of a pirate? Outcast sailors, yet the winds be favoring their sail. It seems unlikely that we’ll outrun their ship. Davy Jone’s locker be waiting for the unsuspecting Merchant. Nay! Not this day! We’ll never strike our colors! My friend beside me vomits, I sighted several colors. He fears the infamous cutlass brandished by a pirate. Waves crash, cries can be heard from the other ship. Tossed across deck- Another volley roar! God, preserve us! We’ve gained no speed in our sail! For our troubles, a casket and cross. Thanks to our Merchant! Toils in a harbor, our friend the Merchant. Safe from the harm-Another volley roar! Now can I sight their colors. Devil Holding Anchors, clever for a pirate. Grappling hooks are loosed, captured by the enemy ship. They show no mercy, we have no sail! We are being boarded! Several more sailors take sail. Perhaps, to bare tales to a certain Merchant. Making quick sense, I learn to indulge a pirate, His cutlass, my saber, we dance about the ship. Last, I now stand, they’ve struck our colors. Behind me, a pistol cocks-another volley roar. It was a lovely day for a sail, A prosperous venture for the pirate. Though such a loss, I pity our Merchant.

Have you ever done the deep dive into where he could have found his "paradise"? New Providence in the Carribbean is often mentioned but the pirate cemetery on Ile aux Forbans, Ile Saint Marie, Madagascar is so intriguing and a little island overlooking the pirate village on the bay....come on, that's exactly where I would have gone! I don't think a wanted man would go anywhere near a island with government where he would have been captured if he disappeared. If you was the most notorious pirate ever and wanted to disappear from the face of the earth then you would have to travel far to a secret island where no government at that time has that island for there empire, there are many island's were he could have easily disappear to.
