It's somehow funny that painting miniatures is seen as nerdy and awkward while painting quite about anything else is artistic and socially acceptable.
@amandasnider26449 ай бұрын
Truthfully it should be more impressive to people....they're MINI. Smol! Teeny tiny details For context: I'm not into Warhammer, gaming etc but what I am is an artist and an amateur goldsmith. I have hobbies in beading, painting, needlework etc... Basically, I'm familiar with the difficulty of smol art form
@XxKidnoffxX9 ай бұрын
Painting warhammer is really artistic too. That's a really good hobby. When you see some people doing some plasma effect on weapons with the paint, that's just so impressive. Some people just paint and collect them, other people just want to play. Some people just read the book... Warhammer got a lot of hobby and so many factions and lore, everyone can love it. But people prefer judging.
@bairdrew9 ай бұрын
Honestly it used to be a lot more socially acceptable than its become, in the UK at least. Up until the 90s dedicated model shops full of railway sets, airfix fighter planes and Tamiya battlecruisers were in literally every town. But the hobby was almost wiped out by the explosion of PC and console gaming in the late 90s and honestly only GW (the makers of Warhammer) really weathered that storm well. The manufacturers themselves survived if in a reduced fashion, but the ecosystem of independent stores that were once so prevalent and upon which the hobby depended as such were annihilated. Where once there was 8 such shops that i knew of within maybe 4km (i live in a rural bubble between 4 satellite towns of Manchester UK) of me, now there is one general hobby store about 6km away and within another 2 within 15 KM of me, and 2 Games Workshop stores within that radius too (these two being the official Warhammer stores in Central/east Greater Manchester).
@ZarkowsWorld9 ай бұрын
@@bairdrew You are right that model-making is destroyed compared to the 80-90s. But WH(40K) was never seen as cool or hip, it was always a fringe-hobby. PC gaming brought it infront of more people - even if some of the early games and some even now is fairly poor - and there is now an even more diverse set of players and experiences. But for anyone older than 40, it is still super-nerdy to paint the figures. Because it was back then.
@shredd57054 ай бұрын
Also that playing video games (nowadays) is something socially acceptable, even beautiful women do it. Even when it's just sitting alone in your cave for days, with headphones on. Recently wondered into a Warhammer game shop because I didn't know what it was and I was so excited and confused in equal amounts. Every single person in the room was not only a nerd from afar, upclose they were really passionate about their tiny paint cans and miniscule brushes. They had a whole 6 meter wall rack filled with all the different colours of these thumb size paint cans. It was wonderful to step into a world I had no idea it existed and to be enthusiastically spoken to by multiple people who all fall over each other gushing to share the story of Warhammer. It was almost like a dream. I played a game with the miniature soldiers too, and won. I have no idea how that is possible. Probably let me win to win me over to come back I guess. 😂

Also note, the very-very-very absolute majority of players are not misogynist, racist or anything of the likes - but we are a lot of us that are Lore-puritans and will take offense when there is unmotivated changes and then lies about why they happen or claims there was no change as some for of gas-lighting. But sadly, Warhammer (40K) is the new hobby that game-press and others see as an area to attack and paint in a negative light, perhaps because traditionally it was played by white nerdy boys. Yes, it was - but that is by virtue of it being started in UK in the 90ies and some specialist stores in Scandinavia importing it to us over the small sea. But we always welcomed anyone, even during WH40K conventions and tournaments in the 90ies.
@RvEijndhoven8 ай бұрын
@@ZarkowsWorld A lot of the problem with parts of the WH40k fanbase comes from the fact that the Imperium of Man is a brutal fascist theocracy whose beliefs and propaganda are literally based on those of the actual Nazis. Most fans understand this and recognise that 40k is a setting where there are no good guys and that this is integral to the game because it means that no matter who wins, the bad guys lose. But there's some people who think that the Imperium is the good guys and that their fascism is somehow justified by how bad everyone else in the setting is... And those fans are not great to be around, because the kind of person who thinks that fascism can be justified as long as 'the other side' is worse jumps to the conclusion that people who they disagree with are 'worse' very quickly.
@ZarkowsWorld8 ай бұрын
@@RvEijndhoven But it does not matter if some of the fans love some faction of the game "too much" (have seen this for Eldar, Tyranids, Space Marines, Chaos and Orcs, as a start) - the question is why GW is doing a 1984 and lying about past LORE and then claiming they are not changing anything and then gas-lighting fans that can point out changes.
@RvEijndhoven8 ай бұрын
@@ZarkowsWorld Ok, so first off... It does matter, because only one of the factions is a fascist dictatorship based on real life fascist dictatorships. And secondly what you're saying about the 'LORE' might sound reasonable to someone who doesn't know the context of what you're talking about, but they might change their mind when they find out that you're intentionally abstracting it to hide that what you're upset about is that Games Workshop released a line of female Custodes models and when chuds like you shouted "Women can't be Custodes!" at them. And then Games Workshop, being the one who _actually_ gets to decide what is and isn't true in the 40k universe, responded with "Actually, as far as we're concerned there have always been women in the Custodes."

Simulate a battle on a chequered board with simple pieces and a ruleset that can be fit onto a single-page leaflet, and suddenly you're a respected intellectual. "The horsey moves in an L! I enjoy Graham Norton, but I *really* despise how he denigrates various hobbies, such as Cavill's love of Warhammer. He does it way too often on the show.
