We tend to be impressed by great actors such as Kirk Douglas, Pacino, Nicholson, George C Scott, Ed Begley, Tony Quinn, because from them we expect spectacular gestures, movements and dramatic uses of their voices, while others like Fonda, Stewart, Grant, Bogart and Cooper look so natural playing their characters that we take them for granted, ignoring that lots of years of training and hard work are needed to reach that level of stage dominance. I remember reading about Hank Fonda on acting, summarizing it by saying something like "the wheels shouldn't be seen". Spencer Tracy simply said "Know your lines and don't bump into the furniture". Lee Strasburg said "Don't act". For some of them it looks so easy while others seem to be struggling, so burdened, as if carrying an enormous weight. Talent is manifested in so many different ways that I find it so fascinating !!! Blessings from San Juan PR !!!

I had a teacher in high school--70s--that had two huge posters in her English classroom. The one behind her: Emily Dickenson: the one in front of her: Robert Redford. Needless to say, we spent a couple of weeks on The Great Gatsby, and had a screening. She made no bones about her adoration. We all teased her, and she was a great sport. We boys demanded equal time, and we didn't buy that Emily gave us that. So one day we came in and there was Farrah in her red swimsuit and with her famous feathered hair.

His first love was the stage, anjd we were fortunate and blessed to have him as a neighbor on Long Island for a number of years. I was fortunate to see him at the long-defunct Plumstead Playhouse in Mineola with Estelle Parsons and Robert Ryan in "Our Town." He made is portrayal of the Stage Manager look so easy (which is over the years why Tony appreciated him and Oscar ignored him; he wasn't "star" enough).
