I well remember the headline, "Peace is at hand". It was a glimpse of hope we hadn't seen in years. As an 18 year old registered for the draft at the time it was a relief as well. We've only had two decent presidents in the 50 odd years since Nixon left office. 💢

How do you stop them from using the HCMT? Send troops into both of those countries and expand the war? Something that the people were completely against......also, there were trip wires, that were unknown at that time, that when hit, could bring in the USSR or the Chinese. I’ve read accounts that Nixon scuttled a LBJ peace deal prior to the 68 election. There are LBJ phone recordings of him discussing this with a Senator. As an 8th grader, I watched our withdrawal from Viet Nam on TV as the North Vietnamese moved on our embassy as we helicoptered our people out. I was very young when Vietnam started and ended but it was on TV every night when Walter Cronkite gave us the news. I was also still young as Watergate played out but it was TV news back then, we believed in Cronkite and Viet Nam and Watergate were the news items that I recall with some MLK and RFK mixed in.

Humphrey knew about it, but did not have the gnadskis to bring it up because of his sense of decency. Add to that he was hogtied to LBJs Viet Nam policy, and could not break free of it, losing the 1968 election, and Tricky Dick later went on to bomb Cambodia.

I think Nixon ‘s pledge to the South Vietnamese government was a genuine one; however, it was politically beneficial to him to expedite the signing of the peace agreement in order to withdraw the U.S. troops from Vietnam. Honoring such a pledge by the U.S. government including the Congress was his secondary concern. U.S. allies will forever subject to uncertainty of the U.S. politics when they are dependent on the U.S. military aids, except Israel which has almost all U.S. politicians (both Republicans and Democrats) under its influence. South Vietnam was one of the victims and so was Afghanistan. If Trump wins the coming election or the Republicans win both houses in November, Ukraine will be another victim.
@richardmeo2503
@richardmeo2503 2 ай бұрын
Your comment on our uncertainty is definitely true, depending on who gets in. But DO NOT DOUBT NIXON'S PLEDGE. Had he not been subject to the coup, NV in 1975 would have been decimated by our airpower just as they were in the spring 72 offensive. And in 75 we had vastly more smart weapons than before.

The Bela Abzug Congress abandoned the South Vietnamese, who fought on successfully for almost two years. But the anti-war movement wanted the communists to win and they did win. Ukraine is totally different. No one ever threatened Ukraine until it stupidly decided that nonalignment wasn’t good enough.

@@conradgaarder So true on absug and dems. Did you know when they were close to getting Nixon out she and some others did not want the Congress to approve of a VP. If Nixon left the Dems would "retake White House", via speaker of House. They have always been the enemy. obamascum is the one who allowed Putin to go into Ukraine in 2014. Remember the Hot-mic in 2012 when he told Russian pres after he gets back in they will have room to maneuver.

@@conradgaarder Non-alignment has been the best political equilibrium for Ukraine in dealing with its big Russian cousin. Unfortunately, the recently elected governments since 2014 decided to join the NATO alliance which has been expanding eastward for the past 2-3 decades. With NATO at its doorstep and no natural geographic barriers to defend itself, Russia is reacting on its basic instinct. Tragic indeed!

Come the interviews with Nixon in the late 80s/early 90s, he was very careful to only describe Kissinger’s strengths and never his character or whether or not he was a benefit to his country.
