I’ve read accounts that Nixon scuttled a LBJ peace deal prior to the 68 election. There are LBJ phone recordings of him discussing this with a Senator. As an 8th grader, I watched our withdrawal from Viet Nam on TV as the North Vietnamese moved on our embassy as we helicoptered our people out. I was very young when Vietnam started and ended but it was on TV every night when Walter Cronkite gave us the news. I was also still young as Watergate played out but it was TV news back then, we believed in Cronkite and Viet Nam and Watergate were the news items that I recall with some MLK and RFK mixed in.

Humphrey knew about it, but did not have the gnadskis to bring it up because of his sense of decency. Add to that he was hogtied to LBJs Viet Nam policy, and could not break free of it, losing the 1968 election, and Tricky Dick later went on to bomb Cambodia.

I think Nixon ‘s pledge to the South Vietnamese government was a genuine one; however, it was politically beneficial to him to expedite the signing of the peace agreement in order to withdraw the U.S. troops from Vietnam. Honoring such a pledge by the U.S. government including the Congress was his secondary concern. U.S. allies will forever subject to uncertainty of the U.S. politics when they are dependent on the U.S. military aids, except Israel which has almost all U.S. politicians (both Republicans and Democrats) under its influence. South Vietnam was one of the victims and so was Afghanistan. If Trump wins the coming election or the Republicans win both houses in November, Ukraine will be another victim.
@richardmeo25032 ай бұрын
Your comment on our uncertainty is definitely true, depending on who gets in. But DO NOT DOUBT NIXON'S PLEDGE. Had he not been subject to the coup, NV in 1975 would have been decimated by our airpower just as they were in the spring 72 offensive. And in 75 we had vastly more smart weapons than before.
