Documentary about the completion of the late Sam Wanamaker's ambitious project of recreating Shakespeare's Globe Theatre on London's South Bank. Wanamaker's daughter Zoë plays the role of the Chorus in the 1997 opening production of "Henry V" and the documentary shows scenes of Oscar winner Mark Rylance in the title role.

Most of the footage of the play apart from the opening with Zoe Wanamaker was filmed May 29th 1997. I still have my ticket from that play and see myself leaning on the front of the stage throughout the performance with close up at 25:00. It's nice to have this memory recorded.

Mark Rylance makes this whole acting life look most like a fun breeze more than anyone alive. Am I missing a dark period? Maybe when he was 7 for a couple of days? The least biggest deal made out of it in the history of performance. I think that in itself is worth watching.

29:50 this is the first actor playing this scene that gives me the impression the king is praying, not monologuing.

Mark Rylance is just a very good actor....that all. He personally doesn't believe. He plays Henry V, written by Shakespeare, as a deeply religious person/king. ✌🏻😰

Zoe has also been in Agatha Christie's Poirot, as Ariadne Oliver--Christie's take-off of herself as a writer of mysteries. Wonderful, as always.

Henry Tudur, Duke of Richmond in "Richard III"; "Oh though whose captain I accord myself, look upon my forces with a gracious eye" on the Eve of the Battle of Bosworth Field. That speech is a leading monologue in all of Shakespeare.

Never mind an Oscar. I hope Mark Rylance won a BAFTA for his work.

He is the most creative and intelligent actor I have seen, and I saw him every summer he was at Shakespeare’s Globe. Wonderful experiences! PS: best Cleopatra ever!

As one who has not been to a theatre in 40 years, I would enjoy a combined Radio/Television Channel dedicated to producing Plays and Musicals within one Wireless/Cathode Tube. Same cast on the Radio, followed by a Televisual Episode about twice the length - and about four times the budget...A full length Audio Book would go down well in some quarters. SHUDDER to think of the price, mind ewe...

I never 'got' the feeble, polite laughter from theatre audiences at lines that aren't especially funny.

it's not a crime to change your opinion..it doesn't change the plays or their value and no I'm not an oxfordian or an anything..but I did have a good time reading a book about all the various theories..and ended it even more confused then when I started 😁

Hey was critiquing modern people-- he said "you modern people" etc. Rylance appears to be a pretty spiritual and grounded fellow.

@@Efelblumfever sorry, but NO that's not true. At first Mark Rylance was indeed critiquing "modern people" for making so much noise while flying. After that he went on to say; 'WE' have conquered Religion and we have conquered God and all that....'. Meaning we managed to do all that and we are not able to make less noise while we fly. So Mark holds this particular believe that he/they/we have conquered Faith & God. ✌🏻

“We’ve conquered religion, we’ve conquered God ...” ?? I don’t think God’s aware of that. 😅And what did that have to do with the noise level? 🙄

Yep, that's a weird connection to make...that after he/they have done away with God & Religion. That mankind would and should have been able, by now, to fly without making so much noise...🤔
