It’s February of 2022 and the Henry X series is shipping. You may have to have your dealer order one or buy from Gunbroker if that’s your sort of thing. With Marlin, everything hinges on how quickly Ruger can get their Marlin rifles to market. I have no idea on how many rifles they took in receivership and how tooled up their assembly process is currently. Everyone I know who is a lever gun fan swears they will buy the first “RuMar” serial numbered lever gun in their town. Even if that means paying upwards of $1600+ . . .My dad bought a Marlin “All Weather Finish” in 45/70 about 10 years ago. He mounted a red dot scope on it and took one shot at a target at 25 yards. Unloaded and re-cased the gun and it hangs on a wall with other (lesser used) guns. He said “we don’t have anything around here that needs that much killin’”. Despite that experience he can’t wait for his chance to buy another Marlin in 45/70 . . just because Ruger is releasing and my dad has about one of every Ruger revolver ever produced.

Excellent meat and potatoes video of one of my oldest used and favored rounds, the 45-70. To "date" my long relationship with the 45-70 and the heirloom rifle that was chambered for it, is displayed in restored condition in the family room, is the Model 1886 Winchester. Grandad, willed the rifle to my father and it was one of the first long guns that he schooled me with, as he shared his life lessons of the manual of arms. That Winchester was used well and well traveled in its 100+ years with my family's ancestors, all Army veterans, serving from the Horse Cavalry of the late years of the Indian Wars to the AEF-2nd Div of WW1, from 1st Cav of WWII-Pacific to 1st Cav Airmobile of Vietnam. Post WW1, Grandad hunted game to feed his family and protect them in the Depression years, Dad learned to do both as the second oldest born. It was his personal firearm and backup to his Army issue in WWII-Pacific, the 45-70 ammo was still available, in use then and inventory for use today(!). When Dad's former Southeast Asia troopers come calling to pay homage to their old Sarge, my Dad, it is with reverence and some wry soldier humor that the Winchester is reminisced. At the Pleiku fire-base the newer 45-70-500 mil-spec ammo took its toll of many night time infiltrators, by Dad's 6th AMTU expertise with iron sights, the close-quarter devastation was unforgettable to the enemy. The former troopers nicknamed the Winchester: The Duke's Thunderstick...

My only gripe with Federal is, the full potential of the caliber isn't being used. The Hammer Down loading has less than 2000 fps at the muzzle and ME is a paltry 2200+. I usually use the Hornady 325 gr. FTX with 3000+ME, but, reloading the Hornady brass is impossible for my set up. My reload is anything but Hornady brass, 53.9 grs of IMR 4198 using a 300 gr. CT Nosler bullet and getting around 3500 ME+. I have both Henry and Marlin .45-70's and love them both. Awesome shooting and straightforward comparison. Well done! I’m looking into 45-70 for my outdoor-grandson-buddy. He’s only 16 YO and at 6’ 1” he still weighs nuttin’ 😜. But he’s a Texas-competitive roper and strong as a little bull. I can see him bear hunting in his lifetime. Someone posted the short barrel Marlin loses about 200 fps. That works out to a significant loss of power IMO. • MARLIN: A 300 grain at 1,900 fps=2,405 FPE at the muzzle (good). • HENRY: A 300 grain at 2,100 fps=2,938 FPE at the muzzle (better). That’s 533 more foot pounds for the Henry’s longer barrel. I want him to have all the advantages he can get if hunting big browns. Smaller black bears aren’t an issue…but I’m not a bear expert. Just going off what I’ve read and other experts’ reviews. But, I like the extra 500 foot pounds for dangerous game. I have both Marlin and Henry in other calibers..both are good shooters. So barrel length would be the only deciding factor. I’ll have to research whether different barrel lengths are options in both brands.

New to lever action. Can you expend on your comment plz? Bottom feeder are harder to load?
@pearljaime23 жыл бұрын
@@yoan975 not harder, it takes more time to do it as you gotta unscrew the magtube cap and place all the bullets in and then screw it back, let's say it is the more comfortable way to load it, but you gotta do it at home or sitting back from all the shooting, cuz you ain't doing it in a pinch. It's almost impossible to load one or two spent bullets without dropping the ones that are already loaded too using this method. The side loading port, on the other hand, is quicker and you don't have to unscrew anything, but that port sometimes dig in your fingers, usually the thumb, if you're not carefull.

Dear GOD!!!!! I Love America!! She did an Awesome Review and Testing with both Marlin 45-70 vs Henry 45-70! (In fact, I'm stuck again with which one to buy first for Alaska! Darn it! LOL) I was a US Ranger/Sniper/ Bla Bla. She is a great Expert Marksman Women!!!! She shoots Darn Well. I would Hunt with Her any Day! I used to Hunt with Marlin 45-70 in Montana 10-15 years Back...for both Bear Protection and Elk/Deer. Awesome caliber. But I sold it in tough times. Military/Govt Pay is Tight. But now I'm a little more secure and need to get one again for Alaska where both My Brother and Son live. I plan to move there myself. I really hope Ruger hurries up and gets Marlin Supported and Funded to re-start production again. Does any one know if its still hard to get Marlin Darks 45-70 still?

I like them both. I like the tube and side gate of the Henry but I like the coated wood stock on the marlin. And I could go for a loop somewhere in between the 2 because the marlin is really bigger than it needs to be.

I have a marlin 35 and this exact .45-70 with the 16 1/4in barrel. Hands down wouldn't trade either of them. The Henry is a good rifle company I have a .44 50 and love it.

My brother and I bought custom serial number Henry 45-70 model X’s. I bought a straight stock for a Henry 30-30 All Weather (black wood) going to mill off the extra metal of the original pistol grip. Plus cut the new black wood straight stock down a 1/2”. Will either buy a straight lever that will work internally or heat and reshape the lever so it fits the 30-30 All Weather straight stock. THEN, I want to send it to a guy in Colorado to convert it into a Takedown! Can’t wait to get it all done. I love my lever guns. (Would love to have it re chambered into a 50-110... not sure if that possible though!)

Looked a bit blustery, could explain the TINY horizontal stringing. As for which rifle? Henry all the way, but as a WI boy, I'm biased. ;)

Nice job, darlin'. Kudos from East Texas. It is a shame the price of today's rifle is the same as yesterday's used car. Glad I got my Marlin 45/70 when I did.
