Dude I worked at the Mayodan facility hopefully these are good but the AR line is a joke with blued bolts and bolt carriers and they don't even have Castle nuts smh plus they want you to basically live there for 12 bucks an hour LMAO they're a bunch of carpetbaggers the only Ruger firearm I own now is a 10/22 got rid of everything else anyone's money is better off spent with Henry or the Italian made Winchester replicas and this is not a jaded opinion I'm stating facts for every gun the Mayodan facility sent out 3 came back with issues

@@lancehawkins1756 I can't speak for Mayodan or the AR Line, but as for Prescott things are quite a bit better than what you say. Hours are still rough, 50 hour weeks are minimum but the pay out here is quite a bit better. Now as for the new Marlins, the 336 I have is very well put together.

About 10 years back I purchased a Rem gun cleaning kit with ALL the stuff, like 15-20 different mops and brushes and all that. (It came in like a tackle box, it was nice...) In the kit was TWO .40 caliber brushes, and NO 9mm. I emailed customer service and told them about the situation, and they f'd me off HARD. It was like, they treated me like all I wanted was a free brush out of the deal. Emailed receipt, pictures, nothing. From that day on, never bought another Remington product. I am overjoyed to hear their company is collapsing. What goes around comes around. This is the best news I've heard in a while. Thank you for letting me know brother.

I have a friend that bought the shorter "Trapper" model and I was surprised at how nice the fit and finish was and the action was very smooth out of the box. Really happy that Ruger took these over and Marlins are nice again

My 19 year old daughter told me she wanted to shoot something with a little more oomph so I bought an 1895 Trapper 45-70 with some "free" Biden money (because that's what he would've wanted me to do with it). I put a Midwest Industries MLOK handguard and a Leupold scout scope on it and that thing is so awesome!!! First time she shot it the smile on her face was priceless. It about knocked her over but she loved shooting it. These are great additions to any collection and highly recommend.

I love it. I've always loved the .45-70 cartridge, I've been handloading it for a few years to feed a Sharps rifle. And to anyone who doubts the long range capability of the .45-70 cartridge, I've personally shot my Sharps out to 1500 yards, making reliable hits on a 36 inch gong, and that's using a tang mounted sight not an optic.

I have a marlin 1895 GBL that I picked up about 10 years back and love it. Right now I am waiting for the 1894 CSBL in either 357 or 44mag, which according to their website should be available spring 2023. With the fit and finish of the 1895's being produced, I'm hoping it carries over to the 1894's.

I’m happy Ruger picked Marlin up in that bankruptcy. I think overall it (Remington Bankruptcy) was a net benefit for all current and future customers. Although I’m a Henry guy this looks awesome. Thank you MAC team.

I'm not. Ruger can stick it where the sun doesn't shine as far as I'm concerned. They not only killed off the affordable Marlin rimfire line after promising to keep it going, they are purposely not selling any Marlin replacement parts according to a former Marlin repair outlet I called the other day. The former Marlin repair guy told me Ruger has a whole warehouse full of Marlin parts that Ruger is refusing to sell. Word is that they are doing this to force Marlin owners to abandon their now "legacy" guns and buy Rugers instead. This is sleazy beyond belief. Tens of thousands of working class kids who own Marlin Model 60s and 795s who use them for Appleseed events can't get replacement parts for them. Total CRAP. So I will never buy a Ruger produced Marlin lever action unless and until they start releasing parts for Marlins again.

The 30/30 was my first rifle my parents got me for xmas. I liked it so much, 2 yrs later I purchase the .35 Rem. I still have and use both rifles. I got them back in circa 1983, when Marlin, was Marlin. I definitely interested in the Ruger/Marlin that's in .357 with a 16" barrel. If those are available or coming out. I'll pick one up.

Great reveiw... as usual. Got one and love it. I hadn't even thought of shooting it at distance. I got it for up close and personal big critter protection in Alaska. For that purpose I've got a red dot on it, and it's super quick, both eyes open / no eye relief concerns, and more accurate than I am. (I may have to try this rifle with a scope after seeing the longer range groups here.) I also swapped out to a Wild West Guns trigger, which I'd recommend to anyone getting this rifle. (No affiliation here; it's a definite improvement.) I've got a LimbSaver slip-on pad (before I actually picked up the rifle), and it does the recoil reduction job as advertised, but I've only used it a couple of times. If you're a normal height person, that slip-on pad might make the pull length a bit too long. (I'm 6'3" and it's OK for me, but when my wife tried it, it was a no-go.) I also want to keep it at stock length during normal use to make sure I don't get hung up on jackets, etc., when the rifle is needed in it's primary role. I do like the Hornady Leverevolution 325gr ammo, after getting a some boxes when they were on sale. I also tried some Underwood ammo that uses Lehigh Xtreme Penetrator bullets, and bought a box of Lehigh bullets to reload. This rifle definitely fills the 45-70 square for me... it's not going anywhere.

I really hope that they bring back the full Marlin line up. As a young man I wanted a 1895 CB (Cowboy) with a long barrel and magtube I believe it held 10+1 rounds of .45-70. I couldn't afford it and go to college as well and eventually the can got kicked down the road so many times that when Marlin changed hands I thought I had lost my chance to get this type of gun that *no* one makes at all.

I bought my Marlin 1895 SBL new in 2013 in Kenai, AK. It's Amazing, one of my best purchases. I worked in the Alaskan bush, and in the arctic, it went everywhere with me. In the arctic we sometimes had "bear guards" but when we didn't I volunteered for it. Never had to hurt a bear, thankfully. But I was confident in the rifle. My Marlin made one from New York is absoltuely perfect, the wood and metal are as flush as possible. The only issue was the big loop had little to no polishing on it. But I took care of that no problem.

Just as an FYI, you don't have to use a pistol scope to mount a scope out toward the muzzle end of the rail. Burris, Leupold, Vortex and probably other quality scope makers make a scout scope specifically for that purpose. I bought the Burris 2-7X32 w/ ballistic plex reticle and it's a great scope, plus when I let a friend shoot it who is a little concerned about the big-bore recoil, they don't worry about scope eye and it helps them relax a little more when shooting the rifle. Plus it looks great on the rifle and, in my opinion, much better suited to the look of the rifle than that primary arms scope that you were using. As nice as that scope appears to be, it just doesn't look right on that style of rifle, IMO. Thanks for the video, my SBL is one of my favorite rifles.

For the average Joe, a lower set of rings is highly recommended. Mounting a scope that high is going to be brutal on your jaw, and maintaining a consistent cheek weld will be difficult. I have a set of medium height on my 1-10x24 FFP LVPO.

A little bit more expensive? Yes, for now, but definitely not triple. I bought a Marlin 1894 SBL (44 mag and little brother to the 1895 SHO .45-70) a few months before before Remington went bankrupt, for $999. The 1895 SBL was about the same or about $1000 - $1100. The new River made Marlin 1895's are selling for around $1200 - $1400, and are under considerable demand, but slowly becoming available as Ruger sets up manufacturing for each model and sub-model. I think as they become more and more available the prices will stabilize or even drop a little.

The 45-70 is a great cartridge. I first fired an old trapdoor sharps when I was a kid. I hit a steel ram at 250 yds. It was very accurate.

@OntarioBearHunter I love hearing people who have never ran a manufacturing business proclaim what something should cost to manufacture. As if size and material are the only considerations. How many man hours does this line of production consume? How much do they make per hour of time spent on these marlins vs. say their american line of rifle? Sales volume, future demand, upfront retooling, how many setups/machines it has to be machined in/on and a litany of other factors play into how much something should sell for. Stay behind a gun counter, it sounds like that's about all you have the foresight to manage. Or maybe go work for ruger and tell them how to make it for the same exact price 🙄

I read in a press release that Ruger used a forged receiver as well, which I like. Probably needed to in order to keep the slim profile of that rifle. I wonder if we won't see a casting for the smaller caliber stuff where pressures and power are not as large a concern. Ruger's castings are top notch, so it doesn't worry me at all. Only drawback is they generally have to be thicker than a forged part which does mean they're wider and a little heavier. But if you're shooing a big magnum in one of these, maybe a little extra weight isn't such a bad thing.

Ruger is notorious for hard hardness in their castings. When they do go boom they REALLY go boom. But it may be too thick to effectively cast to such a high enough needed hardness hence the forging. Ruger's castings are a work of art. I still prefer forged then machined for most anything, even given the cost. I don't mind paying a ton more and owning fewer guns. I prefer quality. That said as an exception I love Rugers no matter. Own enough to need two hands to count all my Rugers.

Regarding the scope mount, the rear sight/ghost ring is easily removed to accomdate a lower and more backwards mount , check manual: Rear Sight Screw, # 8-40, Torx (51)

Good Lord I miss my 1895 CB with an octagon 26" barrel. The fit and finish was amazing and with handloads from the Hornady manual that were Marlin specific, launching a 350 gr bullet @ 2400+ fps out of that long barrel was easy. I added a fold up peep tang sight and from the property I had at the time, I could knock sage bushes off the side of the mountain at what I thought was about 1/4 mile. Me and my buddy told the (young) local ranchers about it and they guffawed, so we invited them to check it out. They were amazed and stated that was closer to half mile! This was before laser range finders were affordable much less available and this is also in mountain territory so we really couldn't walk it off, but these guys hunted elk out there every year so they kinda' had a clue. They also were big 25-06 guys, flat long distance trajectory... I was lobbing the lead in like a mortar.. Having said as much, the new Ruger fit and finish looks good, but not like the "less than dollar bill" tight wood to steel that it used to be, all though way, way nicer than two credit card fit the Remington Marlins had. Does anyone know if the reloading manuals approve of the hot loads I used to use in the old real Marlins are OK in this new Ruger?

Back in 2018 I picked up a Remington made 1895 SBL. I loved it and had no major complaints at the time. Ended up selling it, and after a short time I regretted that decision. Decided to get another one and wound up with a brand new Ruger made 1895 SBL that I have had for about a year now. I was extremely impressed with the improvement of the Ruger made vs the Remington made. The only real complaint I had with the Remington version before I experienced the new Ruger version was that the inside of the lever loop was not rounded off well enough. There was an edge inside the loop that would cut the skin on my knuckles when I actuated the lever bare handed. After getting my hands on the Ruger made SBL it immediately exposed all of the shortcomings of the Remington. The lever is nice and smoothly rounded inside so no more cut up knuckles. The loading gate is much better, it is softer and so much easier to load cartridges into the magazine. The fit and finish is leagues better. The tridium sight, fluted bolt which glides so much nicer and the threaded barrel were all welcome improvements. I absolutely love this Ruger made 1895 SBL. Thank you Ruger for taking over the Marlin name and doing right by it. Bet that I won't be selling this one!

Hey MAC, I found a product you might be interested in. Brouwer Solutions makes a grip module for the P320 called the M1811. It's a frame designed to match the frame shape of a 1911 as closely as possible. As far as I can tell, it's a very recently released product. Seems like something you might like testing. I've got one on the way, so if anything, I'll update this comment later to provide a follow-up.

Thanks for the great review! I just took delivery of my brand new Ruger made Marlin 1895SBL recently. Still haven't even been able to take it to the range and fire it yet. But I'm dying to put a good 1-6x or 1-8x LPVO on it and test it out on some pigs on the ranch. I can't wait for Ruger to come back out with the 1894 in .357 mag. I will be adding one to my collection as soon as I can get ahold of one.

I stuff actions full of polishing compound and do the same thing. Watch movies while cycling the action for a few weeks. Amazing.

I highly desire a Marlin 1895! But since you demonstrated the Smith & Wesson 460 I was wondering if you had ever thought about doing a project gun with the 45 raptor. It's basically a rimless 460 Smith & Wesson from an AR-10. And since both cartridges used 308 as the parent cartridge you still get 20 rounds in a standard AR-10 magazine. That's a lot of Firepower!

Scout scopes, with a long eye relief, also work very well on these rifles. That's what I use on mine.

I mentioned that. Scout scopes are in essence handgun scopes - extended eye relief. It was a handgun scope that Col. Cooper used on his original concept rifle. Thanks for watching.

Great video. I think I saw in another review that Ruger redesigned the loading gate so that the magazine could be unloaded without cycling the action. This is not the case with my Connecticut Marlin 338mx.

I have the 1895 JM built in 1972 chambered for the 444 marlin cartridge. When will Ruger be bringing this cartridge back in the 1895 rifle. I am using 53 grains of VihtaVuori N120 with a 200 grain Hammer bullet going a solid 2800 FPS. I shot 4 deer in Iowa last year with it all one shot kills. This load Hammers them.

I'm really excited to own a Ruger Marlin. While I'm not a fan of certain Ruger products (automatic center fire pistols), there are many things they do well: Mark IV, 10-22, revolvers, RPR, etc.

I picked one up and racked it at the shop and it felt way better than my Rem made Marlin 1984cb. Was very happy to see Ruger buy them out a few years back. Glad they did a great job 👍

I've owned a Marlin / Remington 336, and it would jam allot as the tip of the cartridge would catch on the rear edge of the chamber. I would love a Ruger 336, or 1895

A beautiful firearm. I live in the uk and am seriously thinking of moving to the US just to own some of these lovely masterpieces. The 45-70, 416 Rigby, 500 nitro. Something like that with a few other lovelies to complement them mmmmm! A friend if mine had a Redhawks 44 mag ( not sure) in the military during 69-70. Beautiful weapon

I'll ad my 2 cents. I bought the new Ruger SBL in March of 22. I have since put about 500 rounds through it from various factory loads to several handloads. Stay away from any +p designated ammo like Underwood or Grizzly. The action would blow open partially with these loads and lock up the lever requiring disassembly. Everything else has worked just fine. Compared to my 2000 made JM Marlin 1895G. I'd say it's about on par as far as quality of parts fitment. The loading gate is smooter on the Ruger and doesn't bite your fingers as much. It's a good rifle for most applications, but as for a bear defense rifle and not being able to handle the heavier loads I'm a suspect of it. Last thing you would want with grizzly charging you is to have the rifle lock up. So for that purpose it would be a no for me. Luckily I live in Texas so that not an issue I have to deal with and it absolutely drops hogs in their tracks.

I have one of the older Remlin ones. Shot the Underwood and Buffalo Bore +p+ ammo out of it. Mine had no issues. Now, I'm not shooting a steady diet of the super hot stuff, but with the 60 or so rounds that I have shot through it, I did not experience the issues that you did. Maybe the Remlin ones were built stronger?

Cowboy Yert i would contact Ruger about that . we have a small group of 45-70 nuts ( i have a henry brass and model x) with a trapper and an sbl in the group . i have seen nor heard of any issues with the BB or some of the hot 325gr copper solids pushing 2200fps

I love my SBL from Ruger, however I think I have a rear bird and have the wrong wood and front sight on mine, trapper stock and sight. Also you guys have the brush finished which is on the Trapper.

my 30-30 remington made marlin has noticable gaps in the woodwork around the tang. this ruger example has it beat in that regard...but im not surprised

I am glad to see that Ruger resurrected this Marlin. One of the rifles I wanted back in the late 90s was the Marlin Guide Gun in 45-70. I have always regretted not getting one. I am not a fan of the looks of stainless steel not plywood---sorry, laminated stocks. But I am more than willing to overlook those things here. I have had other 45-70s, including in a T/C Contender. That cartridge, properly loaded in a strong action, is about all anyone needs for any North American game.

I got one of the henry model x in 4570 and mine will chamber 6 plus 1 if you have a surpressor and unscrew the tubular magazine then you have to screw the tube in to get the last round to cycle properly and the tube will hold 5 plus 1 when you have the tube screwed down which the gun only claims 4 plus 1 so not sure if it's just the sub x from hornady that will do 5 but hey I'll take the extra round

I have the Henry X-Model in the 45-70, which is extremely accurate just using the iron sights, hope to put a scope on it soon. I did pay around $750 for mine a couple years back, of course things have changed, but I believe you can still pick one up If you look for around the $900.00 range. For what they are asking for these Marlins, Henry would still be my choice, though you do give up capacity in the Henry but with the removeable tube it does give you another option on loading the firearm, but who knows there still might be a Marlin in my future, they are definitely beautiful guns!
