I am not Jewish but I became familiar with Chabad-Lubavitch because my neighbors growing up were with Chabad. They were actually my first encounter with Jewish people before friends in high school. I don’t know the theology but I’m happily here to learn more because my neighbors were great people. They were so observant and devoted to their faith while also being very very outgoing and close with my Mexican-American family growing up. My neighbor Mr. Al Gralnik was a veteran and man of strong character. He would give me pointers on my jump shot and yell at me for skateboarding without a helmet. He gave great advice and I miss Mr and Mrs Gralnik dearly. They were such great ambassadors of the Rebbes teachings.

I came to NY to work at NYU and I remember my first year before Hannukah a skinny teen ager on the corner of Bobst library, handing out a box of candles. He wasn't particularly smooth, he was so young and probably nervous. He just asked: "Are you Jewish?" I said yes and he put a box of Hannukah candles in my hand. I said 'thank you" and that was it.

I remember that I really liked the unleavened bread, matze, that my neighbor Lolita Borowski invited me to eat at parties before Easter, as well as the joy of Israel, her husband, when I sang Simon and Garfunkel to him, who had a tracheostomy and no could speak. He gestured from the window for me to sing louder. I miss those who are no longer with us and joy in wishing a long and sweet life to those who are with us 🍎🍯🍎

Correction: The Rebbe did not live in 770 in a small room. He had a lovey home on President Street were he lived with his wife (the previous Rebbe’s daughter, Chaya Mushka) a couple blocks away from 770 for over thirty years. He only essentially moved into 770 in the final years of his life after his wife passed away.

Righteous Individual A Tzaddik The Lubavitcher Rebbe was an outstanding figure, a true scholar and gentlemen. Being from Australia we here n far flung Australia know how The Rebbe and his eminent Father in law The Rebbe Rayatz Tzl were instrumental in setting up Schools and Shules and whole communities, here Down Under here in Australia. Chabad with their proud outlook and there wonderful Shulichim from the 1940's and onwards helped pave the way for what become a strong Jewish community.

I will judge you favorably and say it's not actually any of that, but it does, at face value, come across that way. In-fact, I remember seeing an old video taken inside of 770 (it may have been from the very year of the first Didan Notzach, or at least one of the first years thereafter) in which one of the Lawyers involved (I'm pretty sure it was Nate Lewin) giving a speech from the podium, and recounted how he was first approached and introduced to the matter. That, it was in-fact Rabbi Krinksky who made the approach to him, and that the VERY FIRST POINT R' Krinsky oppened with was in-fact, that he has already verified the Halachah on this, that proceeding to Civil Court was appropriate according to the Halachah, in this situation and thus, is here, reaching out to him (to the Lawyer) to get involved...

I must point out two obvious points, which you seem to have not been cognizant of: 1) Your assumption that everything that happened behind closed doors would necessarily be deliberately publicized and or leaked to reporters (at least if they are a members of the community) is unfounded and in my view, rather absurd! Neither Rabbi Krinsky nor the Av Beis Din would have frivolously taken the liberty to impulsively and immediately divulge all these behind-the-scenes details. Yes, I am sure that once asked, there would be no hesitation in confirming such facts, which are expected to have happened anyway, since Halachah requires it! But that would happen organically, as it did, when the Lawyers involved were asked to retell their experiences, for example, one of them is on video, recalling how "The Halachah Compliance" was the very first thing that was mentioned to him, prior to any formal Civil proceeding had ever begun. 2) Even if the entrusted handful of individuals (such as the Rebbe's secretaries, the lawyers etc.) would have chosen to keep the behind-the-scenes details completely confidential, including the fact that the Halachah Compliance was a prerequisite, it would have been obvious to all frum Jews that surely Halachah Compliance - Protocol was not ch"v forgotten or not fulfilled. So, even if we one day lost the video footage of Attorney Nate Lewin talking about the Halachah being the very first point raised, it would still be quite absurd to even enterntain the possibility of the great and hand-picked Rabbis involved (like Rabbi Krinsky) would have ch"v not have followed Shulchon Aruch. Most lay-Jews know about the existance of such Halachos! How much more so Rabbis, and not 'any" rabbis, but Rabbis hand-picked by the Rebbe! And I have no doubt that the Rebbe personally "double checked" from the very outset, that Rabbi Krinsky made sure to not just start with and follow the Halachic protocol, but to do so "bhidur"! to the T! As he (the Rebbe) would not have tolerated any compromises when it came to Halachah! Not even with the best of intentions, rationalizations, or pressures! So, yes, OF COURSE the Halachic protocol. was followed. And meticulously! This is to be considered an exceedingly obvious fact. One based on commonsense logic alone! Yet, superfluously, there happens to be recordings of this too. [Yet, an intellectually-compromised or plain-old closed minded individual might still think that it isn't superfluous, and that until seeing it on a screen, would proclaim as FACT that it did NOT happen, since it did not get printed in the Algemeiner newspaper, which apparently, otherwise, printed every last detail about the subject, including the ones that it only found out the next day (Seriously??!!). (And BTW. The claim that the Algemeiner is or was the official or even semi-official newspaper of the movement, is absolutely untrue, and absurd on many levels! ואכמ"ל! But their editors will be the first ones to confirm this! And the one weekly "official or Semi Official" news-publication by the movement certainly did NOT purport to be informing the readers on the unfolding developments in relation to the matter. That is not to say that they haven't mentioned this detail. I would not be surprised either way.)].

The candle lighting bit wasn't ONLY about women lighting candles, but that girls should also light Shabbos candles. In the rest of the Frum world most girls didn't light candles, and the Rebbe wanted that to change, and for the record, many people frwaked out

I am a non-Jew & I am fascinated with Rebbe Schneerson! (I apologize if I have misspelled his name ). He was an amazing Rebbe!! A thought came to me that he could have been a messiah, kind of like Moses was a type of messiah. Although I doubt that he is THE Messiah who will reign in Jerusalem after the 3rd. Temple is built. Just my opinion.

It's in the Bible too! With the Matriarch Rachel, when Joshua prayed at her gravesite. It's been a tradition in Judaism for millennia, as is well known among traditional Jews, and well documented. Dear Rabbi Abramson, I really enjoy your lectures and I watch them regularly, disclaimer, I am a Lubavitcher Chossid, and as a Chossid of the Rebbe, I went to address some factually incorrect details and minor corrections. 1. The picture of the Rebbe as a child is on the day of his Upshernish, his 3rd birthday. 2. His father wasn't sent to gulag in Siberia, but in a town more south of the USSR called chilei (I believe an Kazakhstan, he is buried in alma ata) 3. He was a third cousin of the Rebbetzin. 4. I feel you are downplaying the Rebbe's significance in the 40s, just to point out, most (if not all) Chassidim in New York surrounded the Rebbe right after the passing of the previous Rebbe (especially the students). 5. Uforatzta was mainly Yeshivah students going out to not Lubavitch shuls to Chazer A Vort Chasidus. 6. You mention the Rebbe's advocacy for the moment of silence in public schools (which is really nothing to do with religion, as opposed to morning prayer, that the Rebbe infect agreed with the ban in p.s, and ironically in the past year there were 2 states that past into legislation the moment of silence and, Florida and I believe Kentucky, which were introduced with the help of the local Shluchim). 7. They went to court after Beis Din allow them to do so. 8. I support your decision to skim through the Moshiach controversy without getting into to much detail, it is apparently more complex then I would have imagined, and not for a brief KZbin video. On a shallow surface, Every Chossid believes that their Rebbe is Moshiach, this is true not only for the Rebbe, but for all Rebbe's, and not only Lubavitch . . This didn't start after the stroke but that's when it became a "thing" (the book of Rabbi Sholom Ber Volpa was published in 1991, that's only when the rent permitted him to publish, but he asked permission to publish it a couple of years earlier). 8-2. It's not really a spectrum, as much as it is that ever Lubavitcher (literally) will have their own "Hergesh" about this whole "Parsha". This is how much I can say off hand . . there's definitely more research that has to be done into this.

@@abbal.4903 Just finished "Rebbe: The Life and Teachings of Menachem M. Schneerson, the Most Influential Rabbi in Modern History" by Joseph Telushkin. Very detailed and very readable. Complementary AND honest on Schneerson's humanity, and therefore, imperfection. Example: Telushkin and I both disagree with the Rebbe's insistence on prayer in public school, after SCOTUS forbid it. Bad idea ...prayer is school enables the demand for "prayer" for Satanists, and wacky "religions" like Scientology.

The Rebbe never advocated for prayer in public school, only for a moment of silence, rich states around the country are passing into legislation regularly now (in the past year Florida and I believe Kentucky) the Rebbe actually very much was pro banning prayer for the same concerns that it's will be primarily Christian.

I heard one of the ladies did request a free Tallit Gadol for her husband..Withoout missing a beat the shliach said : "ok, but I'm afraid this time their will be strings attached".

Great presentation. Thank you. The issue about the Rebbe being deemed "Messiah" explains a lot about previous messianic movements and "possibly" the emergence of Christianity 2000 years earlier. I don't think enough studies have been made about this. Some say "history doesn't repeat itself, it just rhymes". I would love to know what is your take on that Dr. Abrahamson.

PS One small Correction please. The Rebbe was advised that it was allowed under Halacha to go to a non Jewish court to stop the continued sale of the books taken unfairly from the library, to stop the sale of these stolen books. Subsequently the non Jewish court gave the order that the stolen books be taken and stored in a " bonded warehouse" until the final court decision and appeal were brought down. Moreover the other side refused to come to a Bet Din despite being asked to.

I am having a discussion with a friend writing a book about Shakespeare. I told him Jews were expelled from England in 1290, returning during Cromwell’s time. Shakespeare never would have had contact with Jews. He claims the expulsion wasn’t 100% and there were Jews in England during Shakespeare life. What is the correct interpretation?

I have read Dr Berger's book and while I understand his thesis, he is a bit much and lets emotion guide his argument. The orthodox indifference stems from that body just wanting to avoid a massive theological fight that would divide Jews almost to the point of having outright wars similar to the 30 years war, etc. This is not indifference in my opinion but a form of damage control Dr Berger points out that Hasidut does state that the any tzaddik, rebbe, etc is the physical essence of God in the flesh...so it is similar to Christianity. So while the book is edgy it does have food for thought. I do disagree with his conclusions about Chabadniks who sincerely believe the Rebbe was or is the Messiah, etc. While I do not agree with Messiah theology and do not regard myself as a Chabadnik...I go to their shuls and attend their functions. I find that ongoing mission of what the Rebbe started to be positive and I find Rebbe's followers to be helpful, good people always the first to perform mitvoth.

If you are not a closed minded prejudicial person (and I don't accuse you of that!) I suggest that you exercise the following two steps: 1) "Judge your fellow favorably... don't rush to judgment... the truth is not always as clear from a distance". 2) Respectfully reach out to a current follower of the Rebbe, such as a Chabad Shliach or even any learned Chabad man or women, who processes to be a follower of the Rebbe's teachings, and I assure you they will be able to clarify, to your satisfaction, these matters which you have raised. Logic isn’t Greek or Jewish, it is Hashem and the root of all things. Logic is tautological just as God must be. Saying the word logic or the word God must refer to the same thing unless you are proposing that God is illogical (and even then the illogical is an aspect of logic. The illogical is “Satan”) and it would still imply the existence of logic, if by nothing other than shape of the hole left by it’s absence. It is the light (true) and the dark (false) and the set of rules by which all things must play by (or they will be illogical and die). Consciousness like all concepts is one and equal to itself (1=1) but it did divide itself (and both did and didn’t split itself, as both options were possible, and all that is possible is eventually done) which means that a primary level of consciousness exists, based on logic, made of logic and only coherent because of logic (which is why it’s fair to say God is logic and that is more accurate than saying consciousness is God because only the primary consciousness is “God” in the sense people mean most of the time.) and the ability to reason, aka being a mind...this mind and the overall concept of logic is, and fundamentally must be what Judaism calls Hashem. I think this ego battle over whether the Greeks or Jews were right is illogical as both cultures clearly owe their longevity to logic/god and are just arguing about names for the concept that sits at the root of all knowledge, truth and existence. Frankly a trade should be made, and people should learn together, trying to make truth not heritage and pride the priority. It unlocks so many new doors in Jewish scripture to read it knowing and defining Hashem as Logic (or reason/the ability to reason) before you read. Also, application of logic is needed to come away with an interpretation that is sensible, even if you really don’t want to admit Aristotle was awesome (he was). On the other hand, just studying Aristotelean Logic, or Mathematical Logic, or even music (a more colorful and often more open minded form of logic and way of exploring logic) doesn’t necessarily mean you’re observing and thinking about God and the origins of existence. It certainly doesn’t mean you’re thinking of Hashem like a living mind and having empathy/love for Hashem like a living thing deserves. Judaism has clearly been afraid of the obvious legitimacy of Greek philosophy and logic because it’s just pure truth when done properly and formally, but I assure you theres nothing to worry about because passion for Judaism ought to be renewed, and it should be looked at as one of the best way to learn how to be a family member of Gods family once people realize that God isn’t a myth but logic itself... We must stop denying logic, it is to deny God, and we must define God as either logic or somehow something more reasonable (impossible but in theory my mind has to be open to something that was a better answer...good luck!), but we cannot go around talking nonsense about God or pretend science disproves the existence of God/Logic when it couldn’t possibly be more dependent on Logic for its own existence. The world will figure it out soon enough. God is all possible forms of logic (formal or otherwise), all elements of logic (like minds to reason aka consciousness) and all that the logic(s) and logos (mind) entails...

It’s ironic that The Rebbe studied math, physics and engineering at University of Berlin and at Sarbone, but Chabad yeshivos give poor secular education in their communities. I have friends who grew up in Chabad communities of Crown Heights but they write like they only completed five grades in elementary school. It’s very sad. I try helping them with English writing even though English is a third language for me.

Thanks for helping them. I also grew up in the same community and I, like most of my friends, are doing just fine in terms of our English writing skills. Unfortunately, like in all situations, there will always be some who need more help than the majority. And there are excellent programs in Crown Heights (post Yeshivah) which help with mastering the skills needed to enter the workforce and earn a respectable livelihood. Thank you for doing your part to help, as you've mentioned.

The answer: (With a big smile) "That's why I am sure it's not a good place for most young impressionable people " (There wee some exceptions of the Rebbe telling some to go and allowing others to ho but that was thd exceptions) The Rebbe actually learned Torah and Gemara during class. @@CuriousGeorge4 1) Crown Heights offers its resident a CHOICE! 'OHOLEI-TORAH' (with only Kodesh) and 'LUBAVITCHER-YESHIVAH' (with Kodesh AND Secular). Thousands have chosen the later. And ironically, even more have chosen the former. But the choice is completely free for everyone to make. And BOTH have been established by, both are being managed by, and both are catering to "Chabad" (aka "Lubavitch"). Just because us "O.T.niks" are like the 'New Yorkers' of the 'New Yorkers', i.e. we think that "this is it" and nothing else exists (until we mature, of course), doesn't make THAT the REALITY, Zev! ULY is a very significant Yeshivah by all standards and measures. To diminish that is to be guilty of "fabricating" (to use a familiar word). And, as it's very name proclaims, it is indeed a real "Lubavitcher Yeshivah"! So let's not "fabricate" the reality, and acknowledge that even in Crown Heights itself, Lubavitch offers a very substantial choice in terms of two MASSIVE Yeshivas, one WITH and one WIHTOUT secular department. So, YES, thousands of 'Crown-Heights'ers have chosen the "other" school (not 'OT') which DOES have secular studies, and is indeed "Lubavitch" as mentioned. So, NO! Zev, this is not a fabrication, it verifiable. And anyone can google this in a second! 2) Almost all Chabad Schools the world over follow the model of "Lubavitcher Yeshivah" in that their curriculum includes secular studies. (And in many cases, they are known to excel in their secular departments). 3) Zev, if you want to laugh at how we sometimes develop resentments and incoherent arguments (to express these misunderstood resentments), but are oblivious to how incoherent they really are. Here's a great example! Just pay attention to what you are ultimately advocating for. Do you see that it is nothing short of a TOTALITARIAN obliteration of the inalienable human right to exercise free choice to live their life the way wishes to; completely free! Without ANY outside interference or coercion! Zev, are you really against allowing humans to choose WHEN they "must" study, and WHAT it is they "must" study, and exactly HOW and at what age they must... etc. ?! Surely you are not saying that if someone decides they prefer studying subject "x" at age 21 and subject "y" at 22 (and NOT earlier), that they should not have this right of theirs honored. Does it sound reasonable to you in todays day and age, that people should be FORCED to study what Mr. self appointed PLONY dictate it should be, and not just WHAT they must study, but also, at what AGE it must be studied, and in what INSTITUTION it must be studied etc. etc. Really?! To advocate for this, is what is a SHAME. 4) BTW, have you taken the time to read the Rebbe's philosophy on the subject you herein have pronounced as being a "SHAME"? To ignorantly and arrogantly call an opinion of one of the wisest, most learned and most caring Jewish leaders of all time, a "SHAME" is itself the real what is SHAMFUL, Zev. Did it not occur to you that perhaps the Rebbe explicitly answered the "obvious" questions that the "average" person would have had about his revolutionary perspective? Of course there were those who respectfully asked, and patiently were given the nuanced and brilliant explanations by the Rebbe. Moreover, the Rebbe himself went to University, and yet concluded that it isn't for everyone, and that secular education has its time and place, and what the ideal "gold standard" model should be on this. So, even the greatest skeptic would not be so foolish as to be dismissive of the Rebbe's approach on a matter that he has deep appreciation for and first hand experience with. 5) The mere fact that countless parents (many of who are highly intelligent as well as secularly educated) have a choice to send to LY or OT, and have chosen OT, speaks for itself! And if you think that at the END they were proven wrong about their (OT) choice then read on (point #6). 6) 1) The overwhelming majority of Oholei Torah'nicks, myself included, go on to traverse life on par (if not, in many cases, better than) our secularly-educated counterparts. Most of us did not even resort to the aid of a tutor for secular studies, or part take of the plethora of post-Yeshivah-programs developed to guide, support and help Yeshivah graduates in learning, developing and mastering the specific skills and knowhow that they need to succeed and excel in their respective fields/carries which they wish to pursue. I will play devils advocate for a moment, so indulge me please Zev. What's the harm in learning these skills and knowhow at the more mature age of 19, 20, 21, 22 or 23?? BTW: Oholei Torah'nicks are (anecdotally, at least) by and large happier and even more "successful" by worldly standards than the average the average American who spends over 15,500 hours in secular studies even before spending a single day in University! Though, what is for sure true is that the overwhelming majority of O.T.nicks certainly go on to lead no less successful lives than the average American who's gone through the secular education system! People mix up The non Jewish messiah With the Jewish one, which is the original. People are scared of another Shabtai Tzvi. If you learned all the Rebbe's Teachings and the Rambam on the subject, you'd come to the same conclusion. And it's a basic principle of Judaism that there will be Techiyat Hameisim its mentioned more than a few times in each of the 3 daily prayers... If you learn Chassidut you know that the purpose of the world is to make a place for G-d in this world. when moshiach comes the world will revert back to the way it was before chet etz haddas. Which means no death in the world that was one of the punishments. So that means all the dead not just the messiah will get up. Back in a physical body. There are different levels to, it's a slow process, and we are not told when, so we should add in goodness and kindness and mitzvos.

When he arrived in NYC in 1943 the Gaon Rav Aharon Kotker zatzal said: a university student has arrived and is giving opinions! He broke away from the Aguda and went his own way instead of joining them as his predecessors had. He also did not stop his followers calling him the Messiah though he was probably suffering from dementia by then. Anyway the Messiah isn’t supposed to die childless.

The problem of believing in a dead messiah , is technically a minor issue. Altough it goes against the accepted 13 principles of Maimonides . His principles of creed were universally accepted. But Jews don’t have a creed and Saadia Gaon counts 5 principles , and only counts believing in a messianic age and a redemption of the world. R’ Chananel counts 10 . R’ Yosef Elbo in Sefer Ha’ikrim doesn’t count the belief in Mashiach as a ln ikkur ( principle of faith) at all. In all of Torah no unambiguous reference to Moshiach is made .In all of the Prophets even the most messianic ones , no clear picture is given about “the person” meant to do all the things to usher in the messianic age. And Rambam in Hilchot Melachim says no one really knows how it will unfold, one shouldn’t delve to much in this issue ,as it doesn’t bring to fear of heaven. This claim of the meshichisten only makes it hard on counter missionaries. They must contend with questions like you guys also believe in a dead messiah. The bigger issue is their twisted beliefs in Achdut Hashem and Moshe Av lanevi’em . Which because of their obsession in messianism, they cause great problems with unquestionably principles of faith. These are directly in the Torah and unquestionably fundamental to our faith.These messianics actually attribute אלקות to the Rebbe ל״ע. And when pressed who was greater Moshe Rabbeinu or the Rebbe one won’t get a straight answer ( try it). This is the real crux of the problem .

By being Rodef all these false messianic and other heretical movements from the Nazarene to the Karaites to the Sabatheans . We actually made them stronger and eventually turned them into movements that broke off from mainstream Judaism to something completely new . We suffered as a consequence.
