Hi, I recommend using the Rode smartLav+ always with a smartphone, because it was built to go into a smartphone and the outcome is great! If you buy a field recorder to combine with smartLav+, you won't notice any quality difference, unless you buy professional lavaliers, then a field recorder is necessary. Well, they cost a lot, they need their adapters and unless you're being paid you don't need them. However it starts with the less expensive the Sennheiser ME2 at around 150 bucks, and the good ones sit above 300. Your choice though for the smartLav+ is great, it sounds natural and is small and works simple. You can buy though the Zoom H1n, it's a great field recorder, you can hook the smartLav+ into that, the battery lasts a lot and you will get amazing audio. You can then sync in post if you're making a video and the zoom H1n is easy to carry around, small, portable and rugged. Let me know if you have other concerns, hope this helps and thanks a lot!
