Notice that the 109 pilot opens his oil cooler flaps, presumably to keep her cool at the Henschel's lower speed.

0:24 Robert Taylor worthy painting. It blows me away how fast airplane platforms went from proof of concept to operational from 1937-1947. 2 years maybe. Now it takes 20 years and half of them fail.

Excellent way of putting it, the lighting and the clarity are quite exceptional.

However, I've noticed the development times, at least in the US, have shortened dramatically in recent years.

never forget that a war speeds up development and funding is also not a problem. Half the world expected a war in the mid 30s after the rise of the Nazis. That pretty much boosted the development of new aircraft..

@johnfranborra which aircraft? The last 2 clean sheet designs were F-22 and F-35. Both took well over a decade. The rest of the new designs, (P-8, C-27, Super Hornet) were existing airframes with some new bits added

Great shots of the 109's. Love the one of the Henschel cutting across the front of the 109's. Awesome footage as usual!

I would love to fly the HS126 in IL-2 Great Battles. Great footage btw

The Henschel 126 is an under appreciated part of Blitzkrieg (I know this term is not historical) as they were the organic reconaissance element of Panzergruppen/Panzerkorps which provided the close aerial reconaissance tank units depended on during breakthroughs. It was in many ways a german analogue to the Westland Lysander in role, though the later is much more known for its Cloak and Dagger missions

Notice how shiny the 109 is . We model makers have a tendency to give our models a finish that is to matt and with to much weathering . Of course the appearence of an aircraft would be affected by the enviorement it served in but many WW2 aircraft were both shiny and clean .

The 123 is a biplane dive bomber.

Imagine being 22, 24, 25, etc years old as a fighter pilot flying a bf-109, P-51 or Spitfire back then. No digital equipment or computers to aid in targeting or shooting. You had to rely less on technology, but more on tactics & skills in dog fights. Still the technology was quite superb as fighter plans had come a long, long way in just the past 20 odd years. The bf-109, Spitfire & Mustang were all well planned, well designed & superbly built weapons of war. However, there weren’t any guided air-to-air missiles. You had to be skilled with your .50cal guns & 20mm cannons. You had to emgage close enough that you could almost see the white of each other’s eye. Though air combat is overly romanticized through movies, it’s still brutal war, & involved death & destruction however there is something alluring & “romantic” about it. Primal. I supposed air combat back then was less brutal to an extent in that you could survive. Your plane could be shot to pieces yet you could still bail out & live another day. Compared to infantry and armor, the odds of survival were much better in the air. I was a tanker & as badass as an Abrams is it’s not infallible & there are a lot of nasty things on the ground meant to kill you. Some of the weaponry even in WW2 is so destructive that all that might be left of you when it’s done is a drop of blood. Anyway, war is still the worst & awful. I pray the conflicts in Ukraine & Gaza end ASAP. In the time I wrote this, 10 soldiers & civilians probably died in fighting. It’s a sobering reminder that no matter how cool or romantic war may seem or how incredible acts of bravery might be in war, it’s the worst of humanity & in the end, everyone loses to some degree.
