Late in the war a clash of technologies occurred in the skies over Germany. The Luftwaffe's wonder weapon that was the Me-262 fought against the allies pinnacle of propellor driven technology, the P-51D Mustang. Describing the battle in the words of a Luftwaffe pilot shows that it was a very close fight.

Holy shit, so glad to watch this video. Leutnant Walter Hagenah was my Grandfather. He told me this story. What they missed is, that 2 P-51 were damaged because of Airplane parts from their Copilots and Bullets, after he attacked from behind. They needed to stop the chase. He died 2013. He is the reason, why i have the passion for Airplanes. Still have a piece from his ME-262 in my shelf.

Had witness accounts etc, w/no USAF he applied for Ace designation from Army which included AAF under same regs. Turned down as no aircraft issued & flyin' for cover w/BAR didn't count! Later took bridge over Rhine at Remagen w/ammo carrier themselves, but when relieved hour later while guarding his 150+ prisoners left after clearing over 1850, Dad was captured by 1st Army LT claiming Dad was enemy infiltrator in U.S. Uniform, then called in G-2 to make newsreel w/crisis actors showing 1st Army badazzes "capturing" bridge in brand new uniforms, film you can see in KZbin videos! Dad couldn't catch a break except next day on a tip, Ike called General of the 1st Army Hoge while he was completing Dad's Execution Order! Hoge was told "General on the line", so said "That's just Bradley" making Supreme Commander wait! By time Hoge answered, Ike pissed, Hoge dropped phone, then admitted what he and his boys were doing when Ike roared "You're killing Buddy stupid...get him on Point and get enemy away from my bridge". Hoge said he thought Buddy was an Officer, which was wrong thing to say as proved he didn't even know his own troops. Ike furious roared "Hell no, he's the PFC you have been loaning to Monte and myself since Africa and did most of the invasion training for me too, which I just heard you rewarded him with sending him ashore first day"! Hoge answered, "General, I swear I thought he was an Officer..."where Ike cut him off with "Please remember DO NOT EXECUTE, get Buddy on line sending enemy packing! I'll be waiting for your call once (other) Germans are again retreating...CLICK!" Month later April '45, Dad on Panzerfaus Attack Squad of six after 4 Tigers w/20 enemy to be cleared. Dad got 2 Tigers and 10 enemy. Dad & PFC Bob Fish from New York were left unarmed deep in enemy territory, so advanced to the rear zig-zagging at warp speed when "88" hit beneath Bob launching him 25' in air crashing into ground. Dad continued finally diving under fence at our lines at road when "88" slammed in under him, exploded, suspended him wrapped up in barbwire fence remains. Two hours later Thunderbolts dropped thru slit in overcast and cleared other 2 Tigers and 10 enemy. Dad cut down, taken to Triage' at Field Hospital, then thrown in dead pile. Guard a Southern Boy saw Dad's trigger finger move every time he paced by so yelled "Earl...we gots a live one!!" Guards hauled Dad back to Triage', same Doctor checked him and said "He's dead Boys...we already checked this one", to which Guard that had found him slammed his .45 on table and said "Check again". Doc checked, got 2 other Docs and 2 Nurses sewing Dad up with 400+ pieces of shrapnel left in for blood pressure. Dad alive although paralyzed but name already on KIA list where Monte picked it up. Monte told Ike, Ike told Monte and General Bradly to see if a fact. Monte checked but said body hard to find as in French Hospital. Ike ordered Monte to have Dad fetched to London. Dad arrived w/no vitals so absolutely insane Ambulance Driver blasted out of there scaring hell out of both of her Attendants using 2 wheels for turns on a 2-speed ambulance that only had wide open and stop. Driver hailed couple other Attendants at Hospital Emergency dock as hers had puked, then ran alongside gurney with the click, click, click of her shoes urging pushers on, forcing her order from Monte into chest of 1st Doctor they ran into. Dad survived, recovered, prospered, Fathered me in 1950 and passed in 2007, but one of last things he had to say was we owed our very existence to Elizabeth The Ambulance Driver, so even though I've heard she's had a promotion and I'm an American by birth, All I can say is, "I'm proud to be at your service Mum!!"

my friend Wally Groce shot down a 262 with his p-47 ,his plane had a camera ,i saw the photo of the 262 wingtip coming off. the p-47 had a massive amount of guns, 8 -50 cals. Wally said that the plane would slow down when he shot the guns. he said his wingman shot at a train and it knocked it off its tracks,the force of 8 -50's . he died a few yrs ago. i thought some would appreciate a few of his words.

Brand new technology takes time to develop best practices in using it. No doubt the ME 262 advantages would have been a game-changer if they’d known the best way to utilize them. In the end, these aircraft were too little, too late.

It was no different that if a P47 went after a biplane, those slower craft had the advantage the newer ones could maintain a slow enough speed to remain behind them, so the new faster craft would have to do multiple fly by's so to speak whereas the Biplanes could turn tighter and keep firing. Yes they were no match but those advantages could get one home more often than not. Multiple passes are dangerous which is why the ME's would do a strafing pass fire what they could, turn around do it on the way back and be off to base.

Not enough fuel for it. They also had the Arado Jet Bomber. Almost impossible to intercept, when it was used, but it wasnt used much, due to fuel shortage. However, if they had the tech a bit earlier, they most likely would have won the battle for Brtain and then there would have been a possibility for a victory over Russia. "Fun" fact - the Germans never planned to conquer the world - they "just" wanted real estate in the east of Europe to establish a great German(ic) empire. Most likely covering Poland and parts of modern Belarus/Russia and Ukraine.

The 262 performed well for the Luftwaffe late in the war, but it was too little too late. The 262 required special jet fuel and a longer landing strip which likely gave it limited options for deployment.

Jet fuel is lower grade than standard gasoline. Ever wonder why jet engines running smell a lot like diesel engines? Give you a hint they fill up off the same pump at the refinery.

The Me-262 actually required lower-quality fuel than piston-engine fighters, so while it used much more fuel, it was actually better off than most other German aircraft in that regard.

@@jimdavison4077 Diesel fuel and jet fuel are not the same. I have fueled turboshaft helicopters with JP4 (aka Jet B) and piston diesel trucks diesel fuel. We could run our retrofitted HUMVees in Army aviation units on JP4 but we could not run our turboshaft helicopters on diesel fuel.

The low velocity, high explosive 30mm MK 108 cannon on the ME-262 was ideal for shooting down bombers but not a good weapon for fighting other fighters. If the war continued into 1946 it would have received the revolutionary Mauser 213 20mm rotary cannon and engines that had 50% more thrust with afterburner.

@@Serkay64 Its been a while since I researched it. They were going to increase the wing sweep to 14 degrees (same as the Mig-15 and Sabre) and give it a v tail both would have increased the top speed. It would have been far better than the P-80. It would be cool if someone made a modern version.

Germany had quite possibly the most unfathomably brilliant engineers in the world at the time. MG-42, STG-44, Me-262. They invented an unbelievable machinegun that eight decades later still stands as a marvel of engineering and firearms design, the still-in-use format of the modern assault rifle and the world's very first operational turbine-powered aircraft. And there's so much more. Brilliant minds, pioneers of modern technology. Absolute utter indescribable brilliance.

The MG-42 was an excellent area denial weapon, but was not very useful as Squad Automatic Weapon, like the Bren. The MG-42 simply did not fit into British or American doctrine, even though they had the industrial capacity to make it. The American 50cal fit mostly the same role, and has had basically the same long life and influence. The British were actually the first to make a jet powered aircraft, it was only the fact that Germany was throwing their prototypes straight into battle that they were the first to bring them to combat.

It's not that simple. Me 262 had almost no range. It was good for point defense, but going 900 km, doge-fight, and go back (like P-51) is hard for jet engines even today.

As a native of Detroit & as one who has visited the places where these airplanes were born, where Packard made Merlin engine copies. & Where Willow Run made B-24s & more . It's not so clear that it was a technological advantage. The jets were optimized for a short intercept, while the Mustangs had to fly to Berlin and back. If the Americans had built such a jet it would have been useless for bomber escort. As in the video, the Me had such short range that often the preferred tactic was to outlast it in the air, then follow it as it landed and attack it on the ground.

My dad once got to talk to some bomber crewmen some time after the war. He told me about how they said that when they first encountered the ME262, they thought the war was over, and they might lose. How could they fight a plane that moved so fast, they could not train their guns on it in time? Fortunately for them, the enemy's leader was an idiot who "never played Risk as a kid", and wanted that superior fighter to also be a bomber.

The Allies made a lot of revolutionary things of their own, things like Radar and Fire Control technology caught the Germans off guard and they never really caught up with the Allies. Then there's the VT Fuze, the first flak shell to feature a proximity fuse which increased Allied anti-air lethality tenfold. Even in tank technology the Allies made some great tanks, the M4 Sherman at the time of its introduction in 1942 was unmatched. It featured superior ergonomics, a gun stabilizer, thicc armor, and a 75 that can take out pretty much anything in the battlefield, compared to the Panzer III and IV which was the backbone of Germany's tank force at the Sherman reigned supreme. Let's put things this way: Did the Allies not produce jets because, they didn't have the resources and technology to do so, or because they already secured air superiority by 1944 and had no need for a specialized air superiority fighter? Did the Germans produce a lot of wonder weapons because, they had the materials and resources to successfully develop and field them, or because they are desperate to gain an edge in a losing war as all their current equipment has been matched or rendered obsolete already?

@@mitchellcouchman6589 1:7 in the beginning due to air attacks, infantry attacks too, cause the Soviets deployed their tanks separate from the infantry,unlike the Germans. Tanks do not decide wars btw. Also, the first self guided missile was operationally used in the pacific theather, seeing itself successfully destroy ships at standoff ranges. The missiles name is the ASM-1 Bat. Also in the Pacific, TDR-1 first serial UCAV also saw combat and had victories under its belt. The only aircraft in operational use but never saw combat, were the P-80 shooting star and the Ryan Fireball (first carrier based dual powered aircraft). The Meteor saw combat in Europe as a ground attack aircraft as well. The Allied armies were also superior in the sense they were motorized/mechanized, versus the Germans whose armies mostly consisted of line infantry.

My Father was a P51 pilot late in the war and did bomber escort out of RAF Bodney. He said he did see a few 262's but never had an engagement with one. He said most of the time they were going so fast that they were not that effective at air to air. And unless they could set up miles out, their strafing runs on the bomber groups were not as effective as they could have been.

Reality: The Me262 was a flying matchbox, that would violently burst into flames if an engine was struck. Due to shoddy craftsmanship they had a big amount of technical isssues, while there were far too few of them to have any effect. They never had enough fuel and ammunition and couldn't even take off without being destroyed.

One forgets to mention that most aces in Germany were already dead before this jet was put into use and the new trainees learned how to pilot the new technology by taxing around the runway with an instructor on the wing telling him what controls do what before he was expected to go fight.

ME-262’s did have a weakness. Their jet engine turbine blades lacked the chromium and nickel that was necessary for durability. Eight to ten hours of flight time and the engines had to be swapped out. The Allies had access to the world’s best chromium deposits in Turkey.

Back in high school, my JROTC class took me to Houston, Texas, to see an airshow, they showed all the planes and jets starting from WW1-era to modern times. By the time they started showing the WW2-era planes, they had a B17 flying fortress up in the sky with two P51s escorting it, I then looked to the left and saw, low and behold, a working Me 262 zooming in the catch up with them, it was amazing, I had originally thought that there were no working Me 262s left, it was like seeing an ancient relic in person, and it was pretty awesome.

That old movie 'The Final Countdown" where the carrier goes back in time to 1941 was always a fun watch for me. A bit cheezy but just the thought of 1941 tech fighters coming across some F-14 Tomcats always sent a thrill through me lol. What allied pilots first felt when a Jet screamed past them and effortlessly out climb and out dove their planes must have been a chilling experience. We saw it in a movie, but they actually experienced it in real life to a degree. Imagine being a 32 ford ready to drag race friends in 1940 and 1 guy rolls up in a 1980's Lamborghini Countach lol Stuff like that always makes me laugh.

First man proven to break the sound barrier. It is suspected that several other pilots broke the barrier in a dive during the war, but they could not prove it, and not always survive it. Especially the P47 was believed to be powerful enough and heavy enough that it could in right conditions break the sound barrier in a dive.

Had a chance to view a 262 at Pensacola aviation museum while I was going through my training there. A beautiful aircraft and for an F-18 maintainer, the very first jet is an ancestor, albeit distantly, of my own aircraft. Awesome museum, definitely worth the visit.

My father had the opportunity to talk to Mustang pilots who came back from some of these engagements. They were initially stunned by the technology and the speed that they had no way to compete with, but it didn't take them very long to discover that the speed carried a price tag--a commensurate loss of maneuverability in close combat--and they developed new approaches to take advantage of that.

The old turbojets also struggled much more with lagging spool-up, when power is called for, than modern engines do. About a fifth of the fleet was lost in combat ops.

It could have been disastrous for the Allies if the Luftwaffe had the jet technology capable of implementing the Me-262 early in the war. The P-51 Mustang was a impressive fighter/ escort. It may have been used during the early years of the Korean conflict. Your video was very informative.

Allies would have poured the coal to their own jet fighter programs. The US had already produced their dog of a jet, the P59 Airacomet in late 1942 so they were fully aware this is where things were headed. The P80 Shooting Star had just begun flying sorties over Italy right at the end of the war. Look up the statistic of a P80 vs 262, talk about disastrous. ;]

So you assume the allies would not have rushed their own jet programs? They never say any need to rush their development while the Germans were so desperate they wasted resources on thi gs which simply didn't yield results like the V rockets and jet fighters. It had a 1.5 to 1 kill ratio. Hada like number of FW190's been built they would of had much much better results but Jumo 004b engines were made.from mild stamped steel easy to make and with little to no restricted metals. Slave labour was used to assemble both the airframe and engine which resulted in poor quality and workmanship. According to Hans Fey a Luftwaffe acceptance pilot it was not uncommon for aircraft to fail to meet requirements and need to be "reworked" in the field to make acceptable performance levels. Look up first squadron to use jet fighter operationally. It was RAF 616 squadron in July 1944. LUFTWAFFE JG 07 was the first Luftwaffe operational squadron in Dec 1944 five months later.

Not really the Me262 and the Meteor were developed at the same time. Only reason the two didn't fight is because the British kept the Meteor for bomber interception and it was sanctioned to only fly in allied territory so it couldn't be captured by the Axis. Same reason the Me262 was only used in Axis territory so the allies couldn't capture it.

If I remember right (an this'll probably be terribly typed) but putting afterburners in these sorts of videos an such is an artistic approach to show the aircraft is flying is powered an not to be hyper realistic. The game War Thunder did this for quite awhile with jet engines until they made the visuals better an replaced the afterburning effect with a more realistic one. Than again these Me 262's could be rocket powered variants (IE: C-2b).. jokes probably just the artistic way. Sorry if this looks crap but hey question what variant post war had such an engine fitted to it?

The thing about the external tanks, is that U.S. doctrine dictated that they empty 7 gal and then switch to the tanks, to maximize onboard gas in the event of a jettison. Typically they will have burned through most of the gas by the time they reach Germany.

Nah, The Worthwhile things about this plane are it's swept wings(help reducing drag, and increasing speed), and it's MK108 cannons. Western Allies also caught German up in the development of axial flow jet engine in the midst of 1943 the same time that German fully finished their's own axial flow jet engine development program despite British started their own development of axial flow engine one year later than German. Man, The 262 doesn't even got ejection seat like another WW2 German Jet like He-162.

I would love for you to cover the Kamakazi and the Destroyers used in picket duty. Especially my Dad’s ship the USS CALLAHAN DD 792. She was lost while on picket duty around Okinawa. I had the pleasure of meeting and working with Lt Urban L Drew [ Ben ] who flew a P51D named "Detroit Miss". Ben attacked an airfield home to ME 262's from altitude seeing a flight of 3 started take off roll. He shot down the two that got airborne but the leader had flamed out and aborted takeoff. Ben's wingman tried to strafe the AA batteries but they shot him down. Over 20 years later the action reports from both sides were compared and this engagement was accredited as the first ME 262 kills with a piston aircraft. Ben was flown from his new home here in South Africa to the US to receive a high level medal for this engagement. He was later invited by former Luftwaffe pilots to pay respects to his opponent who flamed out that day and survived the war but was dying. You can read Ben's book on his wartime exploits and memoirs - The Katzenjammer Kids. I heard these and many more accounts first hand during our business relationship in Montana Expediting Services. Such a privilege to meet a war ace who was quite a character. He passed away back in "Big Sky" country, Montana, a few years ago and I got a copy of his book too late to respond before his death. Thanks for the informative video and excellent graphics.

Despite the mythos of the Me 262, most people don't recgonize that it was horribly slow and slow climbing for a jet. There were piston planes that matched or exceeded it in climbing. Its actual advantage was its wings, weight and its guns! It was perfectly suited for diving fast on bombers, and it's slightly swept wings gave it amazing control at high speeds. It also had many heavy cannons on board, some variants with up to 6 30mm cannons! It was no fighter, but it was an amazing bomber hunter for sure

Actually the 262 could out climb piston fighters of the day, when countered with escort fighters its prescribed responce was to cut and climb to safety and re attack. It's controls froze up at about 550 mph while piston fighters could exceed that allowing them.to catch the 262 in a dive easily. Also the 262 could not make anything but wide turns and slow roles which is why it was forbidden to dogfight. As for the 30mm cannons they had a max range of 500 years while the standard Browning had a range of 1700 yards and both had the same penetration power. Since jets were slow to accelerate they had to stay at full throttle while in the combat area which caused two problems. First the rate of speed when attacking a target coupled with short range gave pilots only about 2 seconds to aim their entire plane, fire then break off which resulted in many pilots returning with fireing not a single shot. Also with engines made from stamped mild steel heat caused warping and eventual catastrophic failure. The longer they ran at full throttle the more likely the engines would fail and when bombers could easily number between 800 to 1200 with fighter as many as 1500 there was very little peaceful sky to cool the engines down. Flying at cruising speed was an invitation to being bounced by enemy fighters. Also something not mentioned but about 20 to 25 percent of all 262 lost were from gunners on bombers with their long reach. Each bomber could carry six gun stations some with up to four guns reaching 1700 yards with bombers packed in close for mutual support it was suicidal to attack them.

JG07 was the first unit to be operational with the 262, five months after the 616 squadron was equipped with the Meteor for use tracking down V1 rockets over London and South East England. Many people don't understand what the term operational means so they think the Me 262 was the first operational Jet fighter in the world but that is not true. While the 262 did engage in combat with allied aircraft in July 44 their unit was a test and trials unit and not an operational one. So overall not a bad video with just a couple faults but it takes decades of reading to sort this stuff out. Keep up the great videos...
