I’m in my mid 60’s and have used the multi-bladed razors for a few hundred years. After working my way through the last stash of multi-blade heads I decided to finally try something different and try the Henson razor. Glad I did. I really like the modern design simplicity for starters. I ordered Sandalwood Shaving Cream not even realizing this is actual soft cream, not a hard cake, and I really like it. Bottom line: I get a really excellent shave with healthier feeling skin and for the first time in my life, I actually look forward to shaving 3x a week. I’ll never go back to the multi-blade designs.

I've been using several razors for a while, but once I got my Henson razor I've only used it. I LOVEEEEE the mild design, and the way it avoids nicks and cuts. I also like its light weight. I find it easier to manipulate than my heavier razors, so much so I just gave my son my Rockwell 6s razor as I no longer used it. I didn't like having to fuss around choosing which part to use (e.g., 1, 2, 3, 4, etc.), and I didn't LIKE how heavy that razor is. To each her/his own, but at 84 years old, yet fairly new to using these kinds of razors, I'm VERY happy with my Henson black razor....

I bought the medium, it is absolutely not worth $75. It is not any less irritating than a king c Gillette, it’s only benefit is that the head angle is really hard to mess up due to the flat cutting face. The Merkur futur is the same price and much, much better, even for sensitive skin.

After 7 years of the Feather AS-D2, I found the Henson is a better design, the feather blade exposure wasn't consistent, sometimes I had to unscrew and re-center the blade in order to get a symmetrical blade exposure on both sides, the Henson fixed that issue, I don't have to think about it anymore. Also it is very forgiving, I couldn't get away with sloppy technique, when I was in a hurry with the feather, with this I can be a little sloppy and don't pay much attention when I'm in a hurry and generally can get away with it. I have the thickest beard, shave everyday and the mild works just fine, just make sure to get the correct blade for your beard/face. Only thing I don't like is the weight, Perhaps the titanium version is a little heavier but coming from a heavy stainless steel razor this takes some shaves to get used to. Hope this helps someone.

I'm glad the packaging is minimalist. I spent 2 seconds on it and threw it in the recycle bin. I've bought products before where you receive a bunch of plastic, velour and metal clasps. What a waste for something you would never use again. I do wish they sent you a small bag to put the razor in, but oh well. I'm much more happier with the fact that I could buy a pink and/or purple one. I'm tired of the black or silver ones! Wish they had sent you the premium titanium one! Not seeing a lot of reviews about that version and the price seems a bit excessive.

Very thorough, well-done review. The medium Henson was my entry into DE shaving; they were deliberately marketing it at cartridge users thinking of switching. And for me, that was a perfect fit. I'm not experienced enough to compare it with other DEs, but it does make a great transition razor.
@christopherhughes97872 жыл бұрын
I'm thinking about transitioning to DE shaving from cartridges. How's your overall experience been with it? How ergonomic/eqsy is it to use if you're new to it? Is it cost effective? How good of a shave does it give?
@keithosmond57302 жыл бұрын
@@christopherhughes9787 I've been DE shaving now for a year and a half, and I now own 26 razors (I got carried away). I love it, and would never go back to cartridges. For the first four months, this was my only DE razor - and it was a great way to transition. The light weight and long handle (by DE standards; a fairly typical length for a cartridge razor) means it will feel fairly comparable to what you're used to. The correct angle for shaving is built right into the head. And it's much more forgiving than most DE razors if you use too much pressure (as most do at first) - so far less risk of cutting yourself. So, to me, it's perhaps the best razor to use when switching from cartridges. And just a good razor, period - it's still one of my favourites. (Another good option might be to get an adjustable razor - if you aren't familiar, these are razors where you can adjust the level of aggression, so a beginner would start off on the low settings and work up to find a level of aggression that works for them, giving a close enough shave without being too harsh on the face. Adjustables tend to cost a bit more, and will be heavier - though there are some in the price range of the Henson, and a few lower.) As for cost effectiveness... the Henson has gone up quite a bit in price since I bought mine. But if you don't go down the rabbit hole (more on that later) it can still be quite cost-effective. You can buy 100 blades on Henson's site (if you're ordering directly from them) for $10 US. That's 10 cents a blade, and I typically get 4 or 5 shaves from a blade. As I shave every second day, 100 blades would be about a two year supply for me. So while the razor itself may be a bit of an up-front cost, over time you will save money IF you stick with just the necessities. When I mentioned the rabbit hole, many of us find it hard to just stick with the basics: one razor; blades; one cream or soap, and a brush if you go that route. Problem is, there are a LOT of options for all of these things, and if you like DE shaving, you;ll probably want to try more and more products. Hence the 26 razors, seven brushes, and about 50 different soaps and creams in my shave den (I've stopped buying now, or so I tell myself). Anyway - I didn't mean to write a novel. But in short, yes - the Henson is a great way to start out DE shaving. It gives me excellent BBS [baby butt smooth] shaves with most blades. Mine came with Astra Greens and those work very well for me in this razor; they still sell 100-pks of Astras, but I believe they now ship with RK blades. I haven't used those, but I've heard good things. There are lots of KZbin videos of people using this razor; most love it. And there's a FB group called Henson Razor Lovers and More, where you can find extra info and ask more questions. The admin, Randy, is a nice guy and has his own KZbin channel; Hensons are used quite a bit, but he has also just launched a series using inexpensive razors. Hope this helps!

I really like your new video format, Tim. It’s refreshingly different from what most wet shaving KZbinrs are putting out. There are mild razors out there that even experienced wet shavers keep going back to, case and point, the Merkur 34C. I don’t know whether the Henson would fall into that category for me. The design is undoubtedly interesting but still does seem like a boxier Blackbird. As per their website, they do offer a “medium” variant, so it would be interesting to see how it compares to other medium aggression razors.

Very nice review! I subscribed after watching your channel the first time with this video. Thanks for the insight on materials and construction. I recall hearing somewhere the insert in the base plate is tungsten, to provide tight contact with the handle, without marring the surface. You answered my question of which version you used, at the very end of the video. I suspected it was the mild version, and you confirmed it. FYI-The mild is marked with a "+" and the medium is a "++". I chose the medium since I use my Rockwell 6c mostly on plates 3 & 4 and my Progress on 2 & 2.5, because I heard the mild was very mild. I've had mine about two weeks and have used it 6-7 times and really like it. I find the preset blade angle is similar to the OneBlade Core that I have and a great transition to wet shaving ("Set it and forget it" as Ron Popeil used to say about his rotisserie chicken cooker). It has the advantage of accepting any DE blade, as opposed to the proprietary Feather SE blades the OneBlade uses. The Henson AL13 is a very safe razor. You almost can't cut yourself. I have yet to have a nick or cut with it, and I tend to nick my Adam's apple more frequently than I would like to admit.

Please be aware that if shipping to other destinations in the world that there is a duty charge for this product which in my mind exceeds the value of this product. Would have been nice to have had clarity of this fact. When they say they ship they don't mention this fact. Buyer beware.

Hi Tim. I have this razor and really like it. I have the medium aggression model. Do you know which one you have? There is nothing on the razor or package that indicates which one you have. An issue they should address. Thanks for the tip on loosening the head to increase the aggression. Cheers

Is it possible to get a close shave with this razor. I got mine a couple of days ago and have found the cut is not as clean and smooth as advertised at least to me. Any suggestions?
@TheShavingTulsan Жыл бұрын
Not much I'm afraid 😔 I would try using a sharp blade, like Feather blades. Otherwise you will need a more efficient razor. If you are just getting into the hobby, you can run to your local Walgreens and pick up a King Gillette safety razor. Shaves MUCH better, and Gillette blades are also pretty good.

@@TheShavingTulsan Thanks for the honest reply. I wasn't looking to start a hobby. I was hoping to get a better shave and save money. I found it to struggle both with 6 and 1 day stuble. And it takes way longer than cartridge razors. They got me with their advertising. Again, thank you kindly for your reply.

Did you review the basic AL-13 or the AL-13 Medium? Reviews on the latter show that it is more aggressive and gives a better shave. Also, the Merkur 34C HD you recommended has a very short handle. Is there one that has a more standard length? I like the length my King C Gillette, but I really struggle with nicks on the chin, especially with a new blade.

Have you ever used the Fine Marvel? I would like to see your opinion about it
@TheShavingTulsan3 жыл бұрын
I would say the Fine Marvel is a cool looking razor, looks more aggressive than it actually is. However, I've never had a satisfying shave with mine. I've owned 2, and both had plating defects. I've tried a number of blades from Astra Greens, Feather, Voskhod, Gillette Blue, etc and was never pleased with the result, despite really wanting to like it.

@@TheShavingTulsan Thank you, I think we have similar tastes. I like razors that have some blade feel, that is because the different feeling from one blade to another is one of the satisfying things for me to shave. I from Brazil, so every SR is relativity expensive for me, do you have some recommendation bellow 40 dollars?
@koosk414 жыл бұрын
Very timely indeed. I just bought one from The Razor Company and it'll be interesting to see if my one comes with a pack of 100 blades. The manufacturer website would indicate it comes with 5. I have seen one other review and that also came with 100 Astra's. In terms of the mildness you advise, how would you compare it with the Rockwell 'scale' of aggressiveness? Plate 1?2?...My one is on its way and is the 'Azure' model. Very much looking forward to trying it out. Thanks for your efforts here👍

Rockell plate 5 or 6 efficiency with the feeling of smoothness of plate 1 or 2. The blade gap is like .84 with small blade exposure and i got thick facial hair. The blade is perfect clamped, rigid no balde chatter unlike a lot of modern razors. Rockwell 6s, razorock game changer and this Henson razor are probably the best. I havet yet to look at battle brothers razor to compare to, another aluminium razor with small balde gap. I can get a good bbs shave in 2 or 3 passes with a fresh blade for 4 or 5 shaves with multiple brands of blades

And in one year it has gone to $69.95us and higher on ebay. And only five blades. Apparently they reccomend a new blade every 2-3 shaves.

My personal preference for a razor is one that has the same great shave after more than the first use on the same blade. In all the reviews of this razor have not heard anything about getting more than a single great shave from each blade. Not that I'm cheap but I don't want to change the blade after every shave, a lot of waste in my opinion. Even a disposables first shave is pretty good, the second not so much. Any comments on this? Was wondering mostly because why else would they give or sell 100 blades for so little $$ if you did not need a bunch of replacements to regularly use the product!

@TheShavingTulsan4 жыл бұрын
Denzel M oddly enough, not necessarily. It certainly can, but if the razor is TOO mild it can lead you to do more passes than necessary because you can’t feel the blade or to apply more pressure than necessary because you are trying to compensate. I would recommend a more traditional DE and be sure to only do WTG (with the grain) passes. Find a blade that works for you and your skin because different blades work for different people.

I think you got the women's Henson razor. The men's has a .85 gap and the women's a lot smaller. Meaning much milder. Maybe you have the .85 gap? On the other shave vids I saw on it they had no issues with it. But I wouldn't adjust it, without it meaning to be an adjustable.
@TheShavingTulsan4 жыл бұрын
I honestly don’t think so, I think Henson knew what they sent me when they did. We had multiple conversations back and forth. And adjusting it doesn’t bother me as I understand the design. The principle is the exact same as the DOC Ascension in its adjustability factor, and again no blade wobble and plenty of blade tension while increasing exposure. Some people with love the razor and others just won’t 🤷🏻 it’s not that it shaves bad, it’s just compared to the dozens of other razors I have I think there are more efficient options at this price point but I don’t think anyone would be mad they bought it.
@chrisspertos48494 жыл бұрын
@@TheShavingTulsan ok but in the many videos I've seen on it. Nobody had issues on how efficient it was. Everyone seemed to have positive feelings. Anyway thanks
@TheShavingTulsan4 жыл бұрын
@@chrisspertos4849 agreed, and I think that’s why it’s important to watch many opinions, not just mine. That’s what I do anytime I purchase a product I look at positive and negative reviews to get an idea on what to expect so those expectations are tempered. I hate when I get a product that is nothing but hype then ends up falling short, especially when I already have similar products. But I can only speak to my experience with this razor, and that experience was it’s just far too mild. The design of the razor doesn’t allow changes to blade exposure by reducing/increasing angle such as “riding the cap” because of the sloped design (something I forgot to mention in the video). It’s a well built razor to be sure, but I tested it over the course of a month before posting the video despite many videos coming out shortly after receiving it. I think there are several that will enjoy this razor, but for people like me that already have multiple razors in their den it’s not something I feel anyone has to run out and buy. I do look forward to seeing what else Henson releases in the future as I feel they have the right idea and are on to something.

Ships with Astras? No bueno. I used to think the Astras were OK until I discovered Polsilver Iridium. I'll never go back to another blade now. The problem with Astras is the inconsistency blade to blade-- all over the map. Some were nearly Derby dull, others were more like Kai sharp. Heck, I'd even take personna labs over Astras now. This was my experience after burning through 2 100 packs of the Astras.

@@rogwheel Just like he was talking about the metal Henson, I was talking about the plastic on the BIC. Obviously the blades don't last forever. But so called "Safety Razors", were called that because prior they used straight razors. However, current safety razors are far from being safe. You can easily cut your fingers changing the blades and if you pick it up wrong due to having blades on both sides. Try shaving in the shower with it and it easily slips out of your hand, dropping it. You know what razor doesn't cut you? An electric razor. Never once has one of these cut my fingers or nicked my face and they are just as close as a blade shave. They also cut shaving time down and don't require shaving cream or water.
