My ex husband’s sister married a Jahovah Witness when her daughter was 12. By the time she was 14 she attempted to commit suicide. We had her flown across the country and we finished raising her. We didn’t have her for two weeks before the JW’s were at our door. My husband told them if they ever attempted to contact her again, it wasn’t going to be pretty. That is another organization that forbids one from going to the civil authorities for even such things as the rape of a child. It must be handled by the Hall only and one would be shunned if the child told anyone outside of the Hall. After much research it was found out by the Watchtower office in NY- that there were thousands of complaints where some child had to go through the torment as if no one saw the rape- it just didn’t happen. Such an utter destruction of innocence.

Yup my x husband was excommunicated from the JW church. Two of his childhood friends committed suicide. His brother and sister will not speak to him and they did not attend our wedding. Unfortunately cults breed narcissists because it’s all about abuse so our marriage fell apart. Such an unhealthy way to live
@haileyflanery4953
@haileyflanery4953 5 күн бұрын
Correct. My father grew up as a witness and his family is still currently active. Definitely know people of being a victim of CSA in JW and nothing being done and thrown under the rug. So glad my dad seen through their lies and left before he was baptized or else he would’ve been shunned, just like his sister who was DIVORCED from a abusive relationship (divorce is looked down upon and she wasn’t active in the church and was baptized so big no no) Also have a family member who was contemplating leaving as a child and tried suicide. They baptized her shortly after. I just wonder the pressure they put on her. Also no one talks about how many predators (older men) are acceptable to talk to young girls. I have multiple family members who were in “relationships” or talking to men that were twice their age at 16 years old and wasn’t looked down upon since the man themselves were practicing JW and baptized. Also the fact that women are so much more vulnerable to being pressured and manipulated to stay in the religion. All the men in my fathers family that have left or do not wish to continue to practice JW are not shunned and still accepted yet all the women that have left are shunned and no longer able to ever speak to their family members in JW again. And a big reason for that is because women are so pressured and honestly made to get baptized which plays a big part of being shunned.

I feel so much for Dani. I have never been in any form of religious setting, growing up in Sweden there's not much of any sort of religion (not even "ordinary" Christianity), but I've been abused and raped more than once - and the cops refused to do anything even though I came in bloody and bruised and did a rape kit WITH semen present. They said "It's your word against his, and you're an addict so nobody is gonna believe you" And he had said I was into BDSM and that it had gone too far, which is the usual lie rapists tell - and I felt so incredibly alone and worthless. I went to the cops that one time, and it felt like I was being raped again - by the cops. I never told them about the rest of the abuse or the other rapes since they blamed me and my addiction (which by the way was a byproduct of an abusive relationship I was "stuck" in between the ages 13-18 and some other trauma from my childhood). I've been clean now for about 3 years, and I'm 33 this year (also born -90). I started using when I was 14, heroin and Xanax, and then it just became everything after a while. But I relate so much to the feeling of not being heard when you really need it the most, and feeling like I have done something bad because all this shit happened to me. Like it's my fault for not being "perfect". Therapy helps, but I live with complex PTSD and that's never gonna go away. I'm furious at everything the two of you wonderful people have gone through. It's not right. But you are so incredibly strong, both of you, and I can only strive to be as strong as you are. Thank you for this episode! It was eye opening. I was born into Scientology and practiced for 6 years in Russia before moving to US and practicing for a year more here in LA. When she said that we didn’t have a choice, I related so much to that. If I finished my goal for the day, I got to eat a Big Mac. It becomes more of a school away from school. I was doing everything from giving out pamphlets on the street to dropping them off in mailboxes at 10. From believing that everyone needs to be a Scientologist to being called an enemy, if I were to misbehave, it was traumatizing. I even went to the expensive af Scientology school. One tiny room with all the grades in one class and Scientology books as lessons. One day a girl came to school crying because her hamster died. They made me sit in front of her and repeat “Your hamster died.” Over and over until she stopped crying. It’s weird, and I don’t agree with most of the ways it’s been handled. My mom is an OT, but tbh the only difference is probably on the inside, cause I see no changes in her character. It’s supposed to be the state of CLEAR CONSCIOUS MIND. I didn’t see that. What I got to see, is them stealing my college money $40K. Like literally scamming tf out of my Russian speaking mom and going to the house to talk often, also walking in even though no parents were home. I’ll save y’all the stress of having to spend your money, the only thing I got away from it was a confident eye contact (from staring practice) and having a dictionary by my side when reading. Half of my time was spent learning true definitions of words by visualizing them using different aids like random small objects or clay.

The way she described feeling forever watched and the need to be perfect reminds me of how I feel. Mine is the result of a home life governed by a highly controlling mother brought up in a rural European Calvinist community, and a father whose childhood was not graced by a father who loved him. Listening to her story I felt kinship, because whilst we were ostensibly talking about the effects of Scientology here, it is the epitome of any controlling structure and the effects that the constant gaslighting brings about in the victim, lasting for the lifetime of the individual so affected. Believe it or not, I look after my folks, who are very old now (I'm 60), and take great comfort in looking after them well. This helps me to step out from under their yoke, because I will not act as badly as they did to a vulnerable person, even if they are difficult to cope with. Turns out I have autism, as well as a couple of persitent invisible physical problems which were a nuisance to my parents when as a child we were out together, so I guess from their point of view I was being deliberately awkward and quite irritating. There was little awareness of mental health issues back then, and they were both struggling with their own internal struggles caused by the actions of the struggling people before them, and taking their frustration out within the family so they could appear normal (ha-ha-ha-ha-ha), to the outside world. But all of this was subconscious, they genuinely believed that their acts were just and did the best they knew how. None of that alters the lifelong nature of the struggle to survive whilst facing your own nature and to ameliorate the damage your own actions can cause if the chain ias not broken.

Your exactly right! They really aren’t different at all. They all speak of some sort of glorified experience either when your done with courses( Scientology) or the afterlife( Mormon). All for the sake of some entity but yet neither have proof of anything they insist you pay money for and if you don’t, they use fear as s control method. Fear you will burn for not giving your 10% or Scientology they just abuse you through and through till they drain you dry!!! But still are based on lies. The money grabbing from both are based on total lies! It’s just a big scam. And hey, people in other religions can say what they want but the Catholic, and all the rest aren’t much different. Look at the Vatican, all the child abuser but look at the wealth in the Vatican. As much as people give to all the churches and the celebrity pastors with their jets, multi million dollar homes, their multi thousand dollar suits, they are all liars. They are getting rich off of everyone else’s money!!! Through fear and abuse!!! And co trolling peoples lives from some aspect. Catholics tell you no birth control , all the way down to how your body should be taken care of after death. They all stipulate control over your life!!! In someway !! Some , are just much more extreme ! Catholic , Vatican, Pope can’t be extreme with such a big following ! To much to risk! Look how long they got away with SA against children! Doing nothing ! Just moving the Priest who did it to another parish /church etc!!! To abuse more children! They are all the same !!! Makes you wonder why they are against birth control. So they have a steady stream of kids for their perverted priest. Not all of them but many of them! The Vatican is worth an obscene amount of money! It’s it’s own city, State etc.. If all these religious entities including all the fake celebrity pastors etc really did with the money what they say the are going to do, then how is it possible there are still so many hungry, homeless suffering people. Just think about it! All of them that have been collecting money for years. The money the Mormons, and Catholic just those two . Think about all the money they are holding on to. We are talking trillions !! Now think of all the others! There shouldn’t be anyone hungry or homeless. And why are they holding on to it???

She brought tears to my eyes when she said she blamed herself for being assaulted. I was raised with that same attitude. If you aren't being good, making everything right, you aren't worthy. As an adult when my health failed the first thing many of my former friends asked was, are you right with god? Right, because that's why your body becomes ill. I'm sending my love and care, you are enough. I wish you healing.

I’ve listened to the Headleys @BlownForGood, Mike Rinder and A ARon @Growing Up In Scientology and the stories of the childhoods and subsequent lives in the Sea Org are heart breaking (inc Nora Ames’ account of being gay in the SO - she was at CC too). Wow, that was unbelievable. Thank you for your bravery and sharing! This is so small in comparison but someone showed me “The Secret” when I was in my early 20’s and the basic principal was you manifest everything in your life both good and bad. Like you can cure your own concern based on your thoughts. Well…my Mom died when I was eleven and I deal with lots of anxiety and to top it off grew up in a Fundamental Baptist church that was bananas crazy and closely resembles the IBLP, anyways…I could not stop the anxiety thought loop that I somehow caused my Mom’s death. So I’m so incredibly sorry that you understand that thought loop and someone conditioned you to have to battle that. Xoxo

My father was into scientology, had every book LRH ever wrote, and he made my life, and the life of my late Mama a living hell for years. My father wasn't as involved as Dani's family was either, but what I do remember was horrible, and abusive both mentally, and physically. From someone who's seen it too, I just want to say that I really hope you're living a good life.
@adrianneschuth-martin8557

@tommybootlegger both my parents have passed on. I'm so sorry to hear about your father abusing you. My parents werent overtly abusive, but my sister fell prey to drugs and she was very verbally and sometimes physically abusive towards me. I am no contact with her. I have no doubts that scientology had an effect on her journey to drugs and it was luck and personality that allowed me to stay away from them. Life is a struggle as I don't have a support system because my family is basically all dead or unreachable, but I have wonderful friends that are basically family that have been there for me in hard times. So I'm doing OK. I'm in therapy and healing. I did end up in a verbally abusive relationship for 17 years (abuse felt like home) but I'm out for over 4 years now and therapy has helped me do a lot of healing. I hope you have gotten away from your abusive father and have gotten therapy to deal with the pain caused by his abuse. I hope you have been able to heal and have made a good life for yourself. You deserve it.

You just pretty much described a lot of where I am in life right now. I'm 40 now, and I ain't talked to my father in over a decade. I buried most of my blood family back in 2020, so in a way, it feels like I'm all alone with this shit sometimes, but in all honesty, I'm married to a beautiful woman, I'm a long way from where I'm from, and I'm loved. The friends I have now know that I'd die for them, and they'd do the same for me. Life should be beautiful, my friend. I think a lot of what happened was so subtle that people like us didn't even notice or realize that it was happening a lot of the time, or how damaging it could've been in the long run. I've been repressing a lot of things throughout my life, but I think I'm seriously gonna look into some counseling or therapy for myself.

I went to college in West Hollywood and girls from scientology would sit outside for people who wanted a free “stress test” done. I now live about 7 minutes from the Gold Center (I believe thats what they call it) in Hemet CA. I’ve learned a lot about the cult over the years and driving past the Gold Center makes me sad. Just knowing how many people are there either against their own will or because they really do believe it’s the way to live breaks my heart. Shelise thank you for an awesome show and guest! One of your best shows ! As a convert to the LDS Church, who is trying to leave, I found myself nodding in agreement with a lot of things Dani was saying as far as you leave and you lose friends and your "Church,* family. Especially when whats left of mine is pretty dysfunctional. Which is kind of why I joined, only to realize that I have been deceived in so many ways and the last straw was my Bishop lying to me, breaking a confidence and sharing with family without my permission. I have depression and PTSD and it caused me so much hurt and trauma. I can never trust the church again. That is not being "Godly." I appauld Dani for her courage to stay with her mom and than make a "real" joyful llife for herself. BRAVO👏

I'm a neurotic OCD freak and I always assume everything is my fault too - you are not alone & thanks for reminding me that neither am I. 👍 Brilliant channel & brilliant interview. Why isn't religion seen as a form of child abuse? Personally I don't think there is a difference in cults and all organised religious groups when it comes to the child's undeveloped brain. Well done for opening up about your experience and its impact. 👍 It just shows that it doesn't matter what religion/cult a child is raised & educated in, it's damaging & child abuse. A child trusts that their parents know best, a child wants to please, the child is being brain washed & their subconscious thoughts become a dialogue of the brain washing. Unfortunately as an adult that subconscious brainwashing is extremely hard to reverse, even years after leaving. I'm turning 50 this year & my self esteem still sucks, my inner dialogue is still filled with shame and guilt & learning not to feel that guilt & shame for making choices my parents & the church wouldn't agree with has been & is EXTREMELY difficult. I still struggle to believe that nothing will happen to me if I eat meat on Good Friday & yet I still feel that "Catholic shame & guilt". I live in hope that in the future all children's minds will be free thinking. Thanks to channels like yours talking about the damage these groups do to a child's development.

I’m so grateful to you for the depth of your insight, your coherence, your expressiveness!❤ PS I’m thinking of Orwell’s 1984 and of North Korea or Stalin’s USSR: “Big brother is watching.” There are secular parallels like these, but it usually takes the “spiritual” fascism of a cult to infect every single cell in a person’s brain. The sheer brutality of it all!

If this is Dani's first time speaking out the CoS will create a hate website about her, so she has that to look forward to. They will essentially just write a few different posts on the website lying and slandering to try and make her look bad. This is usually their go to move against an ex Scientologist who speaks out. There are many ex members with KZbin channels who can offer advice and assistance on how to deal with any fallout from speaking out against the "church."
