Just some info for folks-Betadine is an antimicrobial with antifungal anti-yeast properties, meaning it kills bacteria, helps kill fungus and yeast on surfaces. It is for external use only-NEVER TAKEN INTERNALLY! It was made for use on humans, and is generally used one time to clear skin of microbes, especially before procedures like surgery, or stitches, etc. though sometimes used to wash out wounds in a diluted form. It can irritate raw skin and delay wound healing. For people considering using it, would recommend a few things to be aware of-because the base ingredient is iodine, and though applied externally can be absorbed into the system, check with a vet about how often or if it can be used.( The iodine absorbed can mess with the thyroid function.) And telling a vet that relief is obtained using the betadine dip, may give the vet s clearer picture of the cause and other medicines that would be safe if the betadine is not good for dogs. Also, ( and this is for human or animals, ) erratic use or not a consistent length of time treatment is administered can cause the weaker microorganisms to die off, but helps the stronger ones to build more resistance. (Please note the caretakers here are diluting the betadine with warm water and timing the length of time in the bath, and thoroughly drying the paws- well done!)
@CcDecember-yq1nf2 ай бұрын
Can I just spray the betadine directly onto the skin? My dog has severe allergies so we limit what he can eat. Treats are so hard to find for him. By the way my dog is a Rottweiler named Parker he's 160 lb pure muscle.
@ms79532 ай бұрын
@@CcDecember-yq1nf Generally speaking, It would depend on the condition of the skin and if the area you want to treat is somewhere he can reach to lick it off. I would check with a vet or others who are using Betadine soaks. If it where he cannot lick it off, a mixture with warm water and a soppy washcloth or sponge blotted on might work . An area he can reach can be blotted on if approved by a Vet, but would need to be rinsed and dried. (I work with human patients but have my own animals) so to be sure all is okie dokie, check with your vet for a thorough eval and treatment plan.)

@CcDecember-yq1nf Get your baby to get into the bathtub empty or with clear warm water in it, then dilute the betadine in a pitcher/container with warm water and then mix it in the water you have in the tub. Either way you need to wipe off and dry the paws. I don't think you are going to get the effect just spraying the paws. By drying them off when they are out of the water also gets any excess off and it doesn't dry on the paws. I'm very fortunate that my rottie would use the steps and step right into my bathtub. (He has done it on his own, with me in the tub.) LOL. His subtle way of telling me he needed or wanted a bath. He would lay down in the tub he liked baths so much. We started him as a puppy, but I had a pittie that would bark at me and walk into the shower when he wanted to take a shower, as well. He didn't take no for an answer either. Dogs are such amazing animals and divas at times. (All animals are amazing and if they live here, they all get baths. Cats, birds, horses, they all got to be clean.) Now does someone have a trick to get your pups to maybe not like having their nails clipped but not hate it either?

The worst part about kibble is if you do manage to figure out an allergen and find a good kibble, they'll randomly change or rename ingredients, and there's no warning. You have to read the whole ingredients list every time you purchase a bag and hope it's still okay. Cooking from scratch seems like it would be harder, or take more time, but it really isn't, plus you have full control over what goes into the food. It is more than likely a yeast infection from feeding your dog nasty kibble or human food. Even if you have dermatitis. It's doesn't originate from thin air, there is a cause to the problem. And likely stemming from internal issues.
@DogLover_3653 ай бұрын
@@ssssjjjhhhh like I said, dermatitis is a form of allergies. Also, people feed their dogs what they can afford. So what if someone is feeding their dog “nasty kibble” in your words. Or giving them some table scraps? You find what works for your dog and stick to it. Shit happens sometimes, it matters how you handle the situation afterwards. And yeast infections can happen from a number of reasons, like food allergies, environmental allergies, even bathing your dog with non dog friendly soap, and many other things. My dog eats kibble, 100$ for a 40lb bag. Her fur is shiny, soft and her weight and body muscle is perfect. She looks fantastic. Mine also has inner digital dermatitis on her paws, which again, is a form of allergies so she gets an allergy pill everyday. @Anonym-xi8ty2 ай бұрын
Coming from a vetstudent, it usually doesn't have to do with raw/cooked diet but with certain protein spources that some dogs might be allergic to. Way to find out is to do 2 months of a single protein diet, meaning you choose a type of meat your dog has never had before (that he hasn't had the chance to get allergic to yet), that could be horse, fish, zebra or whatever, and you make sure he gets this protein only (so if you're feeding commercial food you have to check the ingredients so that there isn't another type of meat mixed into it) and all treats also have to come from this specific sort of meet. If your dog isn't allergic to the newly tried out protein, you should see improvement of skin conditions within 2-3 months. If you don't want to go to the trouble testing out which meats might work, you can also start him on a hypo- or anallergenic kibble or wet food. I generell don't reccomend raw diets because of the risk of parasite infection or bacteria.
@spookyfirkser2 ай бұрын
@@Anonym-xi8ty Unfortunately, due to protein cross-reactivity, the ONLY way to definitively rule out a food allergy component of atopic dermatitis is a strict food trial with Ultamino or Elemental, the newer ultra-hydrolyzed diets. Also, many food-allergic dogs also have environmental allergies, so a two-pronged approach is more likely to solve the issue (a food trial PLUS Atopica or immunotherapy).

Our Pit/Rotweiler mix had the same issue. We got an allergy testing kit and found out what she was allergic to. Then we switched her to a raw food diet and she’s been 100% cured! Amazing results!

@@nadinere3785 amazing how the vets just wanted to do allergy shots. She transformed from miserable to happy in a matter of weeks. I guess it’s no different with our current human healthcare system. Meds, meds, meds, when all we really need to do is clean up our diet.

It’s happening on the inside, foot bath is a quick temporary solution, gotta fix the inside too. Take a look at food, water, vaccines, what you clean with. Some homeopathic remedies would be good, probiotics, raw food.

There’s this dog by a boarding house that’s grown fond of me and I of her. I saw she had an irritated paw. I spritzed vinegar water that I had to spray on her so flies stopped bugging her while she laid at my feet. Did that once and it seemed to have done the trick along with giving it time. Took my chance before she ran off😂 she’s a Rhodesian ridgeback mix (has a black muzzle and black on her chest) I adore this huge puppy.

We used to have a dog that we didn't quite know what she was mixed with but my uncle said he thought she looked like a rhodesian ridgeback and she did. Some people thought German shepherd, but she didn't have any black coating on her anywhere. She was such a sweetheart!

It’s good if you do this once in a while My dog had open wounds everywhere and was itching all the time but changing the food to hypoallergenic was the best with only one protein source like horse, no grain at all and all treats only with the same meat It helped him a lot but we never got rid of it completely

ask your vet about Apoquel! It's really the only thing that stopped my baby's suffering.
@lindseymac3 ай бұрын
Absolutely, apoquel is the best. My baby had really bad ears and it sorted her out. Expensive but effective.

Long term it has terrible side effects though and eventually it will stop working. 😢

This stuff is not ok. Most vets jump on that Wagon way too fast. Try something that is a little ĺess druggie.
@moveme29022 ай бұрын
It's very useful in the short term definitely and if your pet is fortunate, may only need it during specific season where allergies are at their peak. It basically works in the body by going to specific receptors in the immune system to stop them from overreacting to simple stimulus that any other dog would be fine with. Other options are monthly cytopoint injections (usually more expensive) or immunotherapy like Nextmune which is tailor made for your pets allergy

@@ladycanuck66 that sad I was at my wits end. His paws were in such a raw state. We lived in South Florida at the time and it was excruciatingly hot on the pavement! It was a nightmare. No vet EVER even mentioned it to me. Even after several visits. I posted his paws on facebook and someone who was a veterinary assistant, told me about it in a private message. What a saving grace. I gave him and me such relief. Unfortunately, my boy had another more serious condition, and after 3 years of battle I had to let him go. The dog food industry is evil! When I adopt another baby I will be feeding most raw.
