I think so many people missed the actual message they were trying to convey due to her skin colour. Nam from the start was never ugly, she wasn't confident in herself and was going through an awkward stage, (braces, glasses, baggy clothes, no routine care). Shone liked her from the start because he found her cute. She became more beautiful the more confident she became, you could tell she was starting to get popular from after the play, even though she is still "dark", it wasn't until she found her confidence that her popularity really took off. It is sad though that they decided to use her skin colour as a basis for her change.
@chinni4693 жыл бұрын
People just want to critique everything these days. It's not just the skin color that has changed. She grew up as a person. Her career, confidence, her strengths, everything soared up, and she really evolved in that process.
@skotchngoma96843 жыл бұрын
@@chinni469 I get what you mean but you can’t ignore thats one of the things considered unattractive is Asian society being dark skinned. So yes she grew but her becoming fairer is also what makes her beautiful otherwise why did they darken her skin if they it meant highlighting her growth as a person. This message goes hand in hand with the many skin bleaching ads telling us if we are lighter we are prettier and desirable.
@aaldelphia82723 жыл бұрын
True, a worthy storyline but should we just ignore that this character is in “blackface” and considered ugly as a result of her dark complexion? Now that would be foolish. What of the populations that are dark? Should people feel ugly because of it? Heck no and this movie propagates stereotypes that are in themselves ugly and divisive. This world contains more “colored” folks than not, why the heck do we continue to draw lines that separate us? Foolish!

I watched this movie years back when the audience was simpler. And I loved how the guy was in love with her even before her transformation. A 2010 movie showed you're beautiful for the people that matter. So I don't think the movie should be labelled as only about white and dark skin issues.

The thing with darker skin being labelled as ugly is very problematic and should be rightfully criticised but when I first saw this film as a kid, it really made me feel so warm. It has that essense of a first love: the excitement, the frustration, the insecurities. It portrayed young, puppy love so well. I couldn't help but love it.

When this movie first came out in my country, I was in the university back then. We focused on how the girl did her best to grow as an individual whether by her looks or by her studies because of a boy. It never came to us the issue about "colorism" until I read all the comments in here. 🤔

@@jillann2143 That's why. They just saw a video clip of this movie and most commenters started saying about colorism, etc. In my own point of view, at some point we glow up no matter what our skin color is - white, brown, black, etc. It's just that people here only see the negative side of the story, back in our days, these weren't a big issue unlike nowadays. Nearly everyone criticizing the “colorism” on the story. The thing is, that's the point. Shone like Nam from the beginning. People should know that even though Nam achieved that “glow-up”, they still didn't end up together... before the ending. That's the misconception of beauty of Nam.

This movie was one of my childhood favorite, but now I know this has a serious wrong message. They just labelled her ugly because she's dark and portrayed like one can only be beautiful and likable if she's fair. Fair or dark,fat or slim, everyone is beautiful the way are, and our character makes us likable not our complexion, if someone doesn't like you because you are fair or dark, let them live with their narrow mindset. Remember the one who needs to change is not you, but the minds of people who judge others by complexion

The movie also shows that Shone had liked her even before she changed her skin color so obviously become ‘whiter’ isn’t what makes her love come true.

I’m a dark skinned person and the place I come from is the home of colorism. But I love this movie. Watched it 10 years back when I was in school . She changes/improves herself in every aspect even in studies for her first love and as she grows up she gets attention from many people except her first love. But it’s revealed in the end that the boy loved her since the beginning and never expected her to change. He even waits for her for years to return from abroad. The girl was bad in studies but the boy she loved becomes an inspiration for her to grow in life and become successful. She wasn’t ugly in the first place. She just takes care of herself and improves herself as she grows up with the help of her friends. It’s a beautiful movie about friendship and teaches us to take love in a positive way as an inspiration. I mean I have faced colorism in life but I wasn’t offended while watching the movie. You all complaining probably didn’t watch it. It’s an evergreen movie. I can’t believe how people are using the word colorism to relate to it ugggggghhhhh lil brats didn’t even definitely watch this beautiful movie. I mean back then every person I know whether fair or dark skinned loved it and I mean P’Shone was (still is) everyone’s crush of my generation. I can’t believe there are still people who don’t know about this movie!

Ok but I actually liked the girls acting! The scene where she confesses was so good....(bc usually I find that in dramas when the girls get rejected or start crying or something...idk it usually feels awkward and this one wasn't bad so!)

People here are quick to judge. What if you'll watch the movie first? The movie showed how their society defines "beauty" --- that they should have fair and clear skin, also skinny. The girl protagonist believed the people around her since she was kinda bullied and looked down just bcos she's dark skinned. She succumbed to their stereotypical mindset. Especially bcos the boy she had a crush on is very popular and pale. In her mind, she should be like him in order to reach him. But that's not really the message the movie would like to convey. The guy protag had been liking her even before her "transformation". He didn't care about her appearance at all. He didn't succumb to stereotypes. But he's too shy to confess to her. When the girl became "beautiful", did he confessed? He also didn't. It became more complicated bcos the girl garnered more attention, and his bestfriend now like her too. The movie showed the negative side of her transformation. That even tho she had fame, she passed the beauty standard...she still can't get the guy (the reason why she transformed in the first place). That she should have love herself first, accepted herself first before pursuing after the guy. Tho this movie also emphasized the importance of being honest with your feelings. What if the guy confessed to her before her transformation? What if the girl confessed to him instead of assuming he won't like her cos she's "ugly"? A lot of what ifs. This movie is very special to me cos it made me accept my physical appearance. I was 12 years old when I watched this and told myself I'll only love a person if they'll accept me for who I really am. It was released in 2010 but the impact it has on me and probably others too is huge. So yes, I don't like how yall reduced this movie to "dark skinned girl turn pale so it's bad" without even trying to watch and understand the whole concept of it.

When I watched this video I thought about a Chinese drama called " A little things called first love " in this drama the girl is obsessed with a famous boy on school but she is not courageous and when she compare others with her , she feels like she is not beauty that much but her frnds persuaded her to confess him , but she is bit shy but she made a gud frndship with him soon . But like this drama one his frnd but now his bro fallin love with the same girl . After she completed her school lyf she , change her style like remove spec's , become more beautiful .

Bella historia que no pasa en la vida real. Me gustaron muchos chicos guapos, a ninguno le guste yo, incluso no siendo tan fea según la opinión de los demás. Así que sólo en un drama pasará algo como eso.
@Zara888683 жыл бұрын

people are focusing too much on the supposed colourism but havent even noticed that when theyre adults in the future and shone is apparently a professional soccer player, they darkened his skin tone a bit too, as if to show that he plays outdoors a lot. but they never made him look ugly? so 🤔🤷♀️
