I have three copies, for some reason. Actually, it's because I've had one copy for decades, I bought another at a thrift store for 50¢, then I inherited my dad's copy when he passed last year. I heard a joke once that every thrift store in the US has at least one copy.

In 1966 when I was 5 my parents bought a big RCA Vista console stereo (mom still has it in the living room) and a couple of Herb Alpert albums. So "Whipped Cream" was one of the first albums I ever heard in Stereo and I still like it. And its funny that people who buy this album as a joke wind up liking it and Herb's music after they play it.

Hey Geek, I own the album and I've listened to it a LOT. And I've also been playing jazz guitar most of my life. From what I can tell you about the names getting mixed up theory, I'd say that the album got the names right. The song Tangerine is actually from the old 40's movie called "The Fleet's In". Tommy Dorsey is the one who made the song famous. I've actually played the song a number of times in some of my "gigs". From the recordings that I've heard of the song, it's been played in several different speeds and rhythms, and Tommy Dorsey's version starts out slow and then speeds up. So my conclusion is that Bittersweet Samba is just another song that fell victim to bad name choice. =)

Great episode - Herb Albert is such a fine player, and the musicianship is impeccable... overlooked along with Al Hirt because of the schmaltz and overabundance, but I find that if you see the record all over the place, then it must have sold for a reason. There is a place for pleasant background music - like when getting sauced or when you are enjoying some nice clam dip.

Thanks for the good review video, it is a historical album and I’m surprise you don’t think it’s worth listening to. There was actually a later remix with hip-hop artist produced by herb, I think it was titled re-whipped. I think it’s odd that it took you three years of digging through ThriftStore bins to find a copy. After hearing that in your video I went out randomly to two garage sales and to thrift stores and found seven copies of it, total time spent traveling and searching about 42 minutes. I know, what am I supposed to do with the rest of the three years I have left for searching for cool bachelor pad music? If I were to do a remix of my own with this album I would simply make each song a lot longer, this is one of those LPs that you put it on and before you know it it’s time to flip the record over. If you use a record stacker you should consider buying two copies of this LP that way after you play side one the next one on the stack a side too, pretty cool that way

infamous? (do you know the difference. between famous and infamous?) cult classic?? cheesecake??? lounge music?? cliché?? a joke?!? It's sold 7 million albums, guessing most people have heard the whole album (most scores of times) Tangerine, a Taste of Honey, and Lollipops and Roses had been hits for others before appearing here, too. Tangerine is a famous Johnny Mercer song from the '40s, so no, not mistitled. All food? yeah, what did you think the reference to "other delights" meant Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass are the only group to ever have 5 albums in the top 20 simultaneously. They had a very broad appeal (unlike you)

So, has anybody noticed that Herb Alpert records are actually going up in price quite a bit? I just pulled out my 2,800 albums from ten years of storage. About a third of those were albums I kept from bulk lots I bought at estate sales back when nobody wanted records. Anyway, I found, as I sorted my records, that I had four copies of this - one in mono. I'm rediscovering the TJB now, actually. The first copy I ever owned, I purchased as a kid and brought to my high school library (I was in the AV department of the library) in my sophomore year. Someone stole it. That was the wrong album cover to bring to a high school. :)

Hi, when you said they built the whole album by food and the “whipped cream’ single you’re right. But… there’s a history that makes it different Jerry moss, fiend of Herb alpert and co-owner of A&M records, bet Herb to make the album by food. Moss said that herb had to to do the album in base by food or Alpert had to give 50 dollars

The later Herb Alpert albums didn't do as great and you'll often find later albums of his unopened, with stickers on them saying they're gift records as part of your stereo purchase. Also the album Stan Freberg Presents the United States of America was used on Chicago's Svengoolie program for several little audio drop ins.

A quick comment about the albums chart position in January of 1966. Maybe you mean that the album was replaced by the Beatle's Rubber Soul album instead of Revolver. Rubber Soul was released in late 1965 and climbed the charts in early 1966. The Revolver album was released in August of 1966.

I remember this lp when I was 9. Couldn't keep my eyes off of it. I always pick these up when I see them at the thrift stores. I like the Mono lp version better. It is fun trying to find both Mono and Stereo versions of this and all the other lps around this time period. I still have not listened to the whole thing yet. It seemed like having this lp on your radio/hi-fi system back then was just part of being hip to the times. People of all ages were buying this lp-even displaying it on top of their hi-fi. If you want to hear where Herb Alpert got the idea for the whole Tijuana Brass concept check out Bob Moore "Mexico" That Lp is very good.

Being from the sixties, this album seemed to be a staple in our house, playing on a long defunct Magnavox stereo tube console. Herb's Going Places and Lonely Bull albums as well. I eventually inherited Dad's collection and even have this one downloaded on my iPhone. Play it from time to time when I get in the mood for something from what now seem like simpler times. I'm addicted. Just scored a bunch of nice LP's at the world famous Wuxtry Records here in Athens, GA. It's an experience to go to a real record store and flip through wooden fruit boxes full of vinyl. The sounds. The smell. It's all part of the experience. Just like big Al! So glad I found your channel and it's great that you dive down into the comments to interact with people. This is great. Once again your editing and production are top notch for the show. The setup is coming along nicely thanks for askin. Scored a new/old stock turntable from none other than goodwill and it surprisingly sounds fantastic. Gonna put a new cartridge in and it should be good to go. Any cartridge recommendations? Need to figure out how to keep the needle clean (someone said magic eraser). Your setup in this video is superb. Great listening room. How's the tiki bar coming along? Can't wait to see it on a future video.
@VinylRewind
@VinylRewind 9 жыл бұрын
***** Awesome! I've never been to Wuxtry but now I know where to go if I ever find myself in Athens. As far as cartridges I would check the forums at www.vinylengine.com/. Someone may have the same TT as yours and you can ask about the optimum setup. Or just search around for your TT model and see what pops up. A good rule of thumb is that your cartridge shouldn't cost more than your TT is worth. You're really not going to gain the benefits of a high end cartridge on a standard TT. I probably won't break ground on the Tiki for quite some time. I need to do other things around the house first, so it will be down the road. In the mean time I can use the Vinyl Pad's bar.

It's amazing how much your room looks like my media room. Seriously. Love it! BTW, I was a fan of the band when all my friends were into Cream, yardbirds, etc. I worked in the AV department of my high school (brand new in 1970 and called the "MILLION DOLLAR high school"). We had a bank of 20 or so open reel decks that played over the air in our library. Anyway, I brought my copy to school with a few other records to play on the wireless system (one of my classes was "working" the AV room). Somebody stole it. No prob. I perused estate sales in Seattle for a few years and bought albums in bulk. I now have five or six copies. Most of them seem to have never been played. :-) We also had a cool black and white open reel video recorder. Recorded Dr. Strangelove off the air one night. The whole AV department (i.e. a bunch of nerds and nerd teacher), stayed up all night to record it. BTW, that nerd teacher worked for the allies during WWII as a "lip reading" spy. Yeah, she went behind enemy lines and, via binoculars, would watch the Nazi commanders talk and write it all down. Man, all that stuff just came rushing back...
