I have one of these rifles. It was my grandfather's, and was made in 1937. Yes, I shoot it...yes, I reload for it (because you really do have to!), and I've taken three elk with it. Three shots, three elk. It still does the job it was designed to do!

I'm watching Winchester 73 at the moment and I'm wondering where's the "Winchester "73" from the Movie ?

There were actually three guns used for the 1 of 1000 rifle in the movie. None of them were real 1 of 1000 guns. They were all standard guns that were sent back to the Winchester factory and dressed up to look like 1 of 1000 guns for the movie. Rock Island Auctions, in 2007 or 08 auctioned off one of the three movie rifles, as Driftwood mentioned. The movie rifle they had to auction was a 1 of 1000 however it was chambered in 38 wcf... one of the movie guns is reputed to be on public display at the James Stewart Museum in his hometown of Indiana, Pennsylvania; I do not know if this museum went out of business.

I have a Model 71 Deluxe, which is what the Herb Parsons gun is. It's the only production rifle ever chambered in .348 WCF, a cartridge far more powerful than the .44-40 cartridge of the Model 1873. If you have one, and want to shoot it much, you better be reloading because ammunition is 1) hard to come by, and 2) very expensive when you do find it. Recoil is substantial but manageable. While for a museum piece all those autographs are cool, I would never butcher up such a beautiful rifle with autographs and that disk.

Lucky dog! I hope you're a reloader, and that you at least occasionally dust off that little beauty for some range time or (better yet) for some big game hunting.

Incredible. I've got one of these rifles. Unlike the Winchester 73' that fires mild revolver cartridges the big model 71 uses a powerful 348 cartridge that's a real rifle cartridge and it's not playing around. It's the finest leveraction but still it's mind blowing that a full power rifle round was used in exhibition shooting.
