When I was a student of Claude Gordon back in the 70s I heard many stories about his days as a student of Clarke. Some were hilarious, some terrifying!

Very lyrical. The final variation of double tonguing and melody note accents is one of the finest I have heard. Actually sounds like a trumpet duet, but the smoothness and clarity of the melody line separates this performance from most modern day interpretations. Most modern versions have an overly exaggerate staccato accent and harshness to the melody notes in the last variation. His version is seamless with a flowing quality to it. Respect!!!

Indeed the final variation is smooth and flowing, it is something very rarely heard.

And keep in mind, this is a wax cylinder recording, so he is having to play extra loud to get this to come out, oh, and he did it in one take. No going back and editing this. There isn't a single modern player who could play like this today. I can only imagine what that sounded like in person...

Not a cylinder - it's actually a 78 rpm shellac disc recorded by the Victor Talking Machine Company.

IMO - The greatest player of all time. Of course his style of music is old fashioned by today's standards but for sheer beauty of tone, power, control, technic I believe he is just about unsurpassed even today.

The recording is faster than he recorded it.

those old machines had speed that sometimes varies. The only way to fix it would be to compare it with copy of the sheet music to make sure the pitch is correct.
