The writing and directing of these scenes - and the first film in general - is light years ahead of any of the sequels. Some of the best on-screen melding of serious acting juxtaposed with anthropomorphism of a car is in this film (not to mention that this film does get unusually dark and deep at times; almost foreshadowing the current trends of fantasy action/adventure films). Also one of the few times Dean Jones was given the chance to truly act during his Disney era.
