This may be a sad scene, but it is said that this Herbie wasn't an actual car. The body and frame/chassis was wood. The only parts that we're from the real VW beetle was Herbie's unique horn and it was said that an electric motor was used to spin Herbie's wheels as he was plummeting to an unfortunate moment. So basically a real car wasn't used in this scene.

+Dylan Watson I agree, Captain Blythe had no right to arrange for the seamen to throw Herbie in the sea. Of course, Pete Stancheck and D.J. had a right to sue the Captain, especially since they traveled on that ship with Herbie to Panama just to be in a racecar race with Herbie then once they arrived to Panama, I remember D.J. wondered what they were going to do since he mentioned that they need a job. I'm sure from 1:09-1:13 they were thinking "this is not good, now we can't star in the race." (Of course, when they saw the Captain on the bus, they should have at least confronted him on what he arranged to do). I'm sure the ones who would also be angry at the Captain along with Pete and D.J. are Jim Douglas, Tennessee Steinmetz, Mrs. Steinmetz, Willoby Whitfield, Nicole Harris, and Wheely Applegate but, mostly Jim Douglas since he is the owner of Herbie. (From 1:32-1:54 Herbie was probably saying "no, don't throw me in the sea, whatever happened was an accident and it won't happen again" and/or Herbie was probably calling help from Jim Douglas saying "oh Jim, I wish you were here, you would help me out of this." The look on Chief Stewards face from 2:06-2:09 was like he was saying "shame on you Captain for arranging to do that."

That is true, but they found him they know where he is, even after 30 to 36 years of being stuck down there, since this film was made, don't believe me there is an image of him at the bottom of the ocean with Divers looking down on him. So all in all I think it is up to people to determine whether he will see day light again. :)

Actually, Herbie did float. It might have looked like he drowned but, I think the surface of the water just splashed over him. If you have this movie of "Herbie Goes Bananas", you will see in the next two scenes that Herbie is in, Herbie was floating in the water. However, in the second scene as Herbie was coming close to dry land, he was drowning where his friend Paco (the kid at 1:38) saved him with a lot of other men.

@Alex Palmer its Herbie goes banana, one of the last original Herbie Movies. After this movie, the whole Herbie Franchise still alive for many years, until a new Herbie movie "Herbie Fully Loaded" released on 2005. After Herbie Fully Loaded, the franchise became alive forever, till today in 2018
