You are THE MAN......I recently picked up one of these J-8s and took it apart to clean it....Well there is no provision for a set screw "plug" for the ball bearing on the selector switch like on yours....Mine must be an earlier version....And when I took it apart I lost the little ball bearing and didn't realize it till I saw your video.....I thought that little plug stopper that stuck in the side of the body went in where the ball bearing goes instead.....So I figured you probably had a video on one of these and low and behold you did......Thankfully I found the ball bearing and put it all back together.........You are THE MAN once again.👏👏👏👍👍👍👍👍👍

Its an O for Ohio, where Herbrand was founded. There seems to be a lot of tools that used to be made in Ohio.

pretty cool tool they do have their place it is a older design but very cool i have a few of them including a 3/4 drive

I have a Snap On, just like the Herbrand one you have, then I also have another 1/2" one, AA MFG Co...., which I couldn't find anything about while searching. Guys on the forum have seen them tho. It is a gearless mechanism. If you see one for sale grab it. You'll like it!

I was looking at some new ones on Amazon but they look permanently sealed and you can’t take them apart which is annoying lol

When there is no set screw on the collar, the collar is a press fit on the female end of the body. I used a leaf spring spreader to apply equal force on opposite sides of the collar. It required a fair amount of force to move the ball onto the body so the collar could be removed. Two metal wedges and a C-clamp would also work. To reasemble, orientate the collar with the spring hole on the very bottom and balance the ball on the spring. Insert the body with the pawl facing the ball at a slight angle to capture the ball and slide the collar all the way down. Add the top snap ring to complete the assembly.
