Mr. Hippo thought Sebakwe was the Lone Ranger(not that the boy needs anyone to back him up)it’s just 2 Warriors sizing each other up,an incredible standoff indeed!! Little did the hippo realize Sebakwe has an entire army behind him that will not hesitate to step up when necessary,dominant bull or not!! Those last few minutes of this video put a smile on my face our Braveheart playing with Tia(auntie)Bubi,she truly loves that Miesiekind so much just as we all do,their bond is one I have always loved watching flourish from day one.☀️🐘💦🦛🩷🩶

Thank you Owen for catching this fantastic footage! Watching and listening to Sebakwe give orders to Somopane, who backs everyone up. A great moment of leadership by Sebakwe. He gave that daring young? hippo choices, but hippo chose wrong, and when Sebakwe backs up, the troops move in defensively, surrounding the dam edge with particular note to Pisa, Zindoga, Jabu and Mambo trumpeting and shaking heads ready for battle. The hippo wisely retreats quickly back to the water. Khanyisa playing with Bubi was priceless as she showed Bubi how she will make waves in the water like Bubi and use her perfected back kick to that hippo over and over if he comes near her. The temperament of this herd is noteworthy. Give a chance for peace and if not accepted, show your force and allow your adversary to retreat without harm. Well done Jabulani herd! Battle tactics 101 without casualties.

It seems to me that elephants are rather timid animals for their size. There is no practical reason that a herd of elephants should consider a lone hippo to be a threat or challenge of any sort. I've seen a number of videos in which wildlife guides have held off threatening bull elephants with a shout and the wave of a stick. I know there are many cases in which lone bull elephants have killed rhinos, but this behavior hardly seems like excessive bravery given the enormous size difference. In this video we watched a couple of the herd members initially back up just because a hippo got out of the water to face them. They had to assemble the whole herd to get the hippo to back down. I find the timidness of elephants to be an incongruous but very endearing characteristic.
@donnievance19425 күн бұрын
A couple of commenters below have pointed out that a hippo could inflict serious wounds on an elephant with its crushing bite. No doubt this is true, but such an attack on an elephant would be harrowingly dangerous for the hippo as well. Such an event is not at all likely in this circumstance. Consider that no hippo has ever bitten any of the herd members, despite many recorded encounters. If that hippo had made a determined advance on any members of the herd, that would have been a truly extraordinary video, as I've never heard of such an incident. In this and other videos that I've seen, such encounters seem to always involve only a lot of blustering and theatrical displays. It's pretty cute.
@lynnell59935 күн бұрын
@donnievance1942 i didn't for a single minute think there would be a fight in this instance. They are both formidable animals but I thought it was just a show off move from the hippo. What i found interesting was watching how Sebakwe took control and how the herd obeyed his rumble commands. It was a good drill, however, in case a dozen more hippos popped out of the water, lol.

Perhaps not timidness so much, but training for the younger ones and routine action plan protocol. Hippos are extremely aggressive, powerfully built and bigger than some of those elephant youngsters. Love the way this family sticks together, how they've bonded, even though they're adoptees. ❤

This was a bull hippo. When the muck spreading commences, you can see his male organ is used to urinate, which apparently enhances the force of the muckspreading and can extend as far as 10 metres. I was intrigued by the warning trunk splashings to the left of camera, which indicated there appeared to be at least one elephant in close proximity protecting Owen

@voiciray5 күн бұрын
💯 one of the few comments that acknowledges just how dangerous hippos can be. Those incisors and the crushing strength of those jaws are nothing to be sneezed at. With humans, confrontations are tricky because the ego gets involved and it becomes about self-worth (ridiculous imo). In the wild, it's more about how much damage and injuries an animal is willing to accept (goal being none) and still be able to carry on foraging/hunting and living. It's not at all about who's stronger _overall_ (obviously eles are by far in this instance) but about avoiding needless injury.

This is amazing! Elephants are the only animals I see hippos just getting out of the way for. The way that Hippo approached was audacious.

After the hippo pooped and peed in the water, Sebakwe should have said, "Well no one wants to take a drink now!".

Khanyisa doing her characteristic back kicks--far enough from Bubi so they don't connect! Love to see elephant playtime!

Great videography Owen! I wonder...where does that hippo go when not in to pond? Is there a water course nearby? Is it the only "local" hippo, or is there a herd of them? With lions in the area you'd think it would be dangerous for a lone hippo out of its element! And...I haven't seen a crocodile in any of the videos...thank goodness! Has the herd chased-away all the local "crocks"? Oh...last but not least: HAPPY NEW YEAR, Adine...and the same "Best Fortune!" to all the Carers there! May 2025 bring great joy, happy unexpected surprises and great health for all the elephants...love them all, each and everyone, especially Fishan!

I didn't think they would bother each other. Really surprising. What did the hippo think he could do anyway

Hippos are aggressive and dangerous animals, especially when they sense danger, making them one of Africa’s most dangerous animals.

The area looks so different with all of the green grass and trees. Beautiful. So glad that you are getting rain. I pray that it continues. The elephants are also enjoying the fresh water.
