Orphaned baby elephants Khanyisa and Fenya meet for the first time🥰

Cute little trunks of curiosity as Khanyisa and Fenya meet🥰!
We were unsure what to expect when Khanyisa and Fenya met trunk to trunk! We were also unsure when the right time would be, but wanted it to be as natural as possible. This lengthy video captures some of the highlights of their exchanges over the past few days.
Khanyisa started to hang around outside Fenya's (the new calf in our care, who like Khanyisa, survived being caught in a snare) nursery, the day after she arrived. But she seemed a bit shy.
The next day Joshua took a moment using a marula fruit and guided her towards the door opening where Fenya was standing behind. She poked her sweet little pink trunk through the hole and was met with another curious trunk! The trunks danced around one another briefly, and then Khanyisa entered the nursery.
They were both extremely calm and relaxed and Khanyisa stretched her trunk over to her to smell her. Adine and the team let them be, keeping it relaxed and easy - and soon Khanyisa decided it was time to leave.
Over the next few days, Khanyisa has slowly become a bit more comfortable with her new neighbour. Some mornings she makes an effort and others not so much! But you will see some very sweet moments shared between them, and Lammie too!
For the time being, we are keeping Fenya in the nursery as she is still getting used to her surroundings, and her wounds are a concern, especially her one by her throat which has a big gaping hole, which could get easily infected. We also have to be 100% sure that she is comfortable with her carers and Khanyisa, as she could hurt them if she gets startled or scared. Remembering the immense trauma she has been through, these things have to be considered.
Adine would like to have the two calves together in the bigger nursery when the time is right. For now, Fenya needs to heal and get good sleep and rest without distraction, until she gets her strength up.
Khanyisa continues to go into the wild with the herd during the day. She did have a bout of diarrhea two days after Fenya arrived, but thankfully it cleared up quite quickly. This could be due to all the changes and possible stress of change, but it is hard to tell. Overall Khanyisa has handled arrival of the new orphan quite well, however, she has had a few moments, being a little stand-offish with Adine, which is most likely due to jealousy. She is not used to sharing Adine's attention!
We really look forward to sharing their budding friendship and hopefully, a sisterly bond grows too, starting with this lengthy video showing you some of the highlights of their budding relationship💚.

Yeah Fenya and khanyisa are different cases Khanyisa was so so young when she was rescued But fenya is comparatively a big baby So she has a clear memory of being loved and cared about by her mommy, aunts, grandma and happily playing with cousins Fenya needs a little bit more of time to cherish that memory of her past without the feeling of being deserted and then go on the journey of enjoying the happy present She needs time Poor little thing 😭

I doubt it. One's these two little elephants have a good bond their play activities will be elephant sized, there is every chance that they may use Lammie as a football or basketball or volleyball. Little one's of all animals are very naughty without the guidance of their moms and in the case of elephants it is a different thing.

This is wonderful! Khanyisa loves and trusts Adine, ; Fenya is trusting Adine more each day therefore it's sensible that she is at these meetings. Adine is giving Khanyisa her usual affection so she won't feel "pushed out". Fenya is witnessing this affection. All part of the plan to encourage Fenya and she's responding beautifully! I love the way you hang the food branches to keep them in the flow of wild foraging, and to keep their trunks in a strong position. It wonderful to see you being gentle and understand that when one has been injured to move slow and let them know their kind is still around. Trauma takes along time to heal and knowing there is others around who care helps a lot no matter if it is animal or human. I loved this. Little Khanyisa has the cheery welcoming personality and Fenya is standoffish and defensive. She wants to connect. I was surprised she didn’t go running over to say, “hey, one of my kind”. You can see how desperately hurt Fenya is although she is bigger. My heart breaks for her. Thank you for all your work. I pray Fenya continues to put on weight and get better.

Yes, they feel a great deal of emotion and they don't forget. It'll take a lot of love and care to get her not just physically, but emotionally well again. She isn't as young as baby Khanysia, so it might take a little longer. And it might not. She's made a long of progress in a very short time so I'm optimistic that she is going to be ok and will be outside enjoying her days with her new Herd very soon. :)

@Jeanette Reynolds Sweet pink baby Khanyisa is still the smallest baby! She could easily be hurt by Fenya. It wouldn't be Fenya's fault, because she is scared and traumatized and all these elephants and humans are new to her. It would be the humans' fault for putting them together too soon. Adine and the HERD carers are doing the absolute best thing for everyone by introducing them slowly and keeping them both safe from possible harm. They are experts at this! And Adine has a magical touch with baby elephants :) I understand how you feel, though. Makes my heart hurt thinking what these babies have been through, and Fenya's trauma is still very, very fresh. She's still in pain with wounds. It's so sad. But she is getting the very best loving care.

Both Ellie’s need time and lots of attention and reassurance that one is not a replacement for the other. As each were “abandoned” they may feel jealous and abandoned again. An only child with all the attention has to adjust to a new sibling needing attention, too. HERD staff is so attuned to emotional states and needs, I know. This will be a process that needs time and patience.

I knew I wouldn't make it without tears, but I didn't expect the chuckles! I am sorry, this is an actual essay, I can't help it. I feel so much pride just knowing there are people like your team on this planet. God bless all of you. I remember the first time Khaniysa met I think Jabu, the minute they touched trunks in my head all I said was, "BOOP!" because that is what it looks like ha. It's so quick, lol. Same with them! So endearing. Joshua, the loving beautiful man as always, Adine, the entire HERD term, and of course, our two little baby darlings. Call me crazy, but does anyone else have a feeling this may be the only video where these two aren't going to be playing and running around together because they will become inseparable? I do. Elephants self awareness is just as - if not better than humans, I am convinced. Just like the HERD recognized Khanysia was different and special, they were slow and gently mostly with her, and took baby steps... you can TELL that Khanysia knows there is something special about Fenya, that she has a few boo boo's that she too had, and that she needs special attention for a bit. She doesn't want to push too hard. You can see Khanysia still holding back a bit as not to force anything, and take one little step at a time with her new sister and it's so magical to see. SHE KNOWS. I am sure these two are communicating just like we would. When Fenya first got there, this is the step I felt would truly open up more of that light within Fenya as she continues to heal because soon she will be surrounded by so much pure love, protection, and loyalty, she won't know what to do with it all. She may have to "fake a tumble" every now and then like our sweet girl Khaynisa did (you remember that ONE, lol ;-)), just to sop up all that attention and love she now will have. Fenya has an ENTIRE FAMILY out there waiting for her, and I can't wait to see how much she continues to grow. She is healing and getting well so much faster than I initially thought and that is SO GREAT TO SEE! Keep the dono's coming folks!!! None of this would be possible without the entire HERD team and doctors, you all are miracle workers, truly. We are humbled to even share in this experience with you all. PS. I laughed out land when I saw LAMSIE - ALWAYS there. What an absolute love. Lammie's inner monologue I imagine went something like, "Really?!?!?!? Another one of you youngsters??!!!! You kids these days, I told you to stay away from those bad humans!!! At least you got the good ones hear now...... Well, they don't call me Lammie the Legend for nothing - I shall be on you like white on rice young lady just like your big sis, get used to it, I am your new shadow. I will be watching youuuuuuuuu." We love you. All of you. I was waiting for this video!

I would dare to say they were talking to each other. I watched their body reactions...and it is like a silent language. Surviver got exited and asked Sunshine about her family...Sunshine said I haven't seen them...and Surviver got sad and turned her back. The scent tells the tale...I wish we knew more about this wonderful creatures comunication.
