Thought I would cluster a bunch of Atari 400 Cartridge games. I feel like this system is really similar to the Atari 2600 system- or at least the cartridge games are. I imagine there would be a greater variety of games on disk and cassette. Maybe I'll stumble on some someday...
Asteroids
Choplifter
Frogger
Jumpman Junior
Miner 2049er
Missile Command
Pac Man
Pole Position
River Raid
Spy Hunter Star Wars
Ep256

Nothing touched the Atari 400/800 games in 1979. It was a leaps and bounds improvement over the 2600.

Come on man , the 400 version of Asteroids is way better than the 2600 version . The asteroids actually have big explosions when you hit them , they travel in all directions after they explode and split instead of just going all vertically in the 2600 version , and the 400 version also offered bounce mode that makes asteroids not pass through the edge of the screen and bounce around like crazy . It's still asteroids except more polished and with better game physics and sound . At the time these systems were new , the 400/800 games were considered way better than the 2600 versions . They're on par with the 5200 games . Try to look at these games through 1980 eyes , not 2022 eyes .

I'll never forget seeing an Atari 400 for the first time at Dillards at McCain Mall in North Little Rock, Arkansas. They had PacMan running and I was like blown away that PacMan could be that good at home. And they let me use the "BASIC" cartridge and I liked how easy it was....and funny, I am IT Directory for my company but I also have to handle our CEO's 2 homes and family stuff and at one of his homes, there was an Atari 400 in a cabinet in his theater room...no one can tell me why it is there.

I had an 800 with Basic and only a few cartridge games. I eventually got a floppy drive for 1982 Christmas and then discovered a school friend with a TON of games ripped to floppy disks. One of my favorites was Archon.

There were some decent keyboard replacements that were decent, but this unit, being really a game machine that's leaps above the 2600. Simply look at an early title such as Star Raiders in comparison. Riverraid offers tanks, balloons and shooting choppers which are not available on the 2600 and is higher in resolution, which offers more details. I am also grateful that it plays just like the 2600 version, for the mechanics on the 2600 version was extremely tight with perfect.

Actually, the 400 has a perfect keyboard for what it was designed for - they intentionally designed this machine for kids and games. The membrane keyboard was great for that. I had 2 400's back in the day. One had the original, and the other had a mechanical keyboard replacement that is a lot like modern laptop keyboards.

I would say the 400 had richer colors than the 2600 and slightly crisper graphics. I've had access to them all. Atari's thing was "gradually" upgrading graphics for every system.

I loved my Atari 8-bit. It's where I got my start making games professionally 40 years ago. I can tell by your comments you really weren't a fan or had one back then, otherwise you wouldn't say the games are the same as the 2600 version or assume the Atari 800 was just following the C64. Nevertheless, loved Choplifter. It was a big influence on a game series I made, Desert Strike, Jungle Strike, Urban Strike, etc. Jumpman (and Jumpman Jr) is one of my Top-10 games of all time. It has influenced practically all 100+ games I've made over the past 40 years. Miner2049er is awesome. Loved that game.

I definitely did not have one back then. I've been playing the carts more and they are certainly more involved compared to the 2600. I've also only branched into the cartridge realm so far. I'm starting on some of the other media. I just got an 800xl and am looking to see how different it is than the C64- which I am more familiar with. I picked up a bunch of Atari books too- it's pretty interesting to see all the possibilities with Basic and Machine Language. Thanks for watching! I will check out the Strike games- very cool!

Concerning the yellow Spy Hunter. I was a Commodore kid. It does seem a lot of odd color choices to various games on that system, like all the green in Archon. Definitely a sort of a game aesthetic that has been lost to time.

Great video! I do think the quality was a fair step up from the VCS, the 400 seems closer to the 5200? Pac-Man indeed looks excellent, thought I've never found the admittedly weird VCS version "abysmal" at all, we all loved it. I know many disagree though, at least retrospectively! Must have been exciting, having a home version of Star Wars so soon after it arrived in the arcades. River Raid is such a polished game, I don't think it needed any other improvements on the 400 really. Thanks again for zero b/s videos, always enjoyable not to have to endure the trying-too-hard-to-be-funny-with-crass-humour which bedevils so many other channels!

@@youreallyplaythat I just remember it being such a magical era because it was already amazing having arcade type games at home, Atari VCS etc., but the consoles and home computers were, by the early 80s, starting to approximate the arcade more closely. It was an immensely exciting time! I didn’t realise the 400 arrived as early as ’79.

The 5200 is basically a consolised Atari 8 bit computer; they're not compatible but the bulk of the hardware is the same in both systems. (And I also enjoyed the 2600 version of Pac Man - as a kid growing up in the UK I had never seen the arcade version so I had nothing to compare it against, and while it's not a great port of the original it's still a perfectly playable game.)

Wow. The 400 came out in 1979, years before the Vic 20 and C64. When it did come out, it came out with the 800 which had more ram and a full keyboard (the 400 was a cost reduced machine so more people could afford it); both the 400 and 800 came out numerous years before the Famicom / NES. If you 'compare' the 2600 games to the 400/800 you will see a big difference in graphics. The list goes on. I think you should try making this video again with the full facts at hand.

Miner 2049er is a classic, and the levels 1-10 are very clever as it introduces the transporters and the slides and you have to figure out how to "color" various parts of the screen. The signs in Pole Position - it sucks that they have nothing on them, but if they remove them then there is no obstacle that makes you explode (hence why they are always at the outside corner). I disagree about River Raid, this version has a smoothness that makes it easier to play, it almost feels slower even though it's not. I love this version of Spy Hunter too, to me the NES version is such a "twitch" game where you have to kind of memorize what the screen does next and then know which side you can evade too, whereas on this one, you can see it as it comes. No real point in getting a disk drive for a 400, as you will need more than 16k to play most disk games. If you had an 800 (or just an emulator), then yeah, there are tons of amazing disk based games.

No, no connection. Jumpman and Jumpman Jr. Back then (and even now to some extent) Japanese developers would not look at anything outside of other Japanese developers, so I doubt Miyamoto ever saw Jumpman.
