We do know that the more people turn out to vote in elections, the higher the level of satisfaction with democracy. And you don't actually have to vote. You need to turn up at a polling booth and have your name checked and crossed off. What you do with your ballot is then up to the individual. If people do not have a legitimate reason for failing to vote, they will be fined. If you fail to pay the fine, the matter is sent to court. If the matter is dealt with in court and you are found guilty, you may be fined up to $180 plus court costs and a criminal conviction may be recorded against you
