Without Raynor and Zeratul, Mengsk was unable to escape the UED, Kerrigan was unable to overthrow it, and the sector was conquered for the betterment of mankind. Well, either that or because Duke and Fenix survived, their tactics, discipline, and ability to throw down with the best of them were enough to usher in a better age than we got in Starcraft 2

Yet it was an ill victory though. The zerg on Aiur were lost of control and fell under the influence of Amon. The absence of the overmind led to the Brood War and ultimately to what we saw in the ending of SC2.

Honestly, in my headcanon First Starcraft in one game and Broodwar and the rest of the games - is another. And in the First Starcraft protoss should not have had any troubles mopping any remaining zerg on their homeworld. Even more - with the driving force behind zergs (Overmind) gone zergs could have reverted back to being animals they were before they were engulfed by the Swarm. But with Overmind gone the Swarm itself should have disappeared.
