The USS Montana will be a Virginia-class submarine of the United States Navy. She will honor the U.S. State of Montana. Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus announced its name on 3 September 2015 at a ceremony hosted in Billings, Montana with U.S. Senator Jon Tester (D-MT). She will be only the second commissioned warship bearing the name "Montana".
A contract modification for USS Oregon (SSN-793), Montana (SSN-794), and USS Hyman G. Rickover (SSN-795) was initially awarded to General Dynamics Electric Boat for $594.7 million in April 2012. On 23 December 2014, they were awarded an additional $121.8 million contract modification to buy long lead-time material for the three Virginia-class submarines. The U.S. Navy awarded General Dynamics Electric Boat the contract to construct 10 Block IV Virginia-class submarines for $17.6 billion on 28 April 2014. The tenth boat is scheduled for delivery in 2023.

Which is why it is appalling that the country can’t even build two Virginia class submarines each year. We should be building at LEAST four. China is churning out submarines at a pace America just can’t keep up with anymore. Someday soon America might find Chinese warships in our waters with no way to repel them, opening up cities like Los Angeles and Seattle to being attacked with huge waves of cruise missiles. All because politicians would rather prioritize social welfare programs and “shovel ready” stimulus packages over national defense.

As a FYI, like aircraft carriers there will always be a submarine under construction for the foreseeable future - why? Because you need to preserve the skill sets (in addition to detailed construction plans there is a lot of "tribal knowledge" on the part of the workforce used to make things fit) of the workforce and the supporting infrastructure both cannot be readily replaced in a time of emergencies. Russia lost that asset with the separation with Ukraine. NASA lost that asset by stupidity abandoning the Apollo program infrastructure and now trying to play catch for the Orion program.

That's sad. Politicians tend to renege on these kinds of things, leaving a trail of ruin in their path. I heard about the loss of America's most skilled shipbuilders. The Air Force seems to have endless money for steak dinners and $2bn/unit stealth bombers. It's ridiculous. We could have had what, a theoretical 500 subs built for the cost of the F-35 program? They wasted hundreds of billions renegging contracts, canceling contracts, you name it. I guess the ability to dismantle 4th rate militaries with impunity exceeded the perceived threat of China. Hopefully some long term contracts are put in place.

It would have been helpful if instead of fluff pictures and flowery phrases you actually said something about what makes the Montana so deadly. The specifications the video did give were largely applicable to the Block I-II ships. The Montana is a block IV Virginia Class. The first 10 Block I and Block II Virginia-class submarines have 12 individual 21-inch diameter vertical launch tubes able to fire Tomahawk Land Attack Missiles (TLAMS). The Block III and IV submarines are built with two-larger 87-inch diameter tubes able to house six TLAMS each. Block III & IV subs feature a revised bow with a Large Aperture Bow (LAB) sonar array. The horseshoe-shaped LAB sonar array replaces the spherical main sonar array which has been used on all U.S. Navy SSNs since 1960. The LAB sonar array is water-backed, as opposed to earlier sonar arrays which were air-backed, and consists of a passive array and a medium-frequency active array. Compared to earlier Virginia-class submarines about 40% of the bow has been redesigned and dramatically more capable. Virginia Class attack submarines are equipped with a fly-by-wire ship control system, which provides improved shallow-water control. The SSN 774 Class has features that support special operation forces such as the torpedo room, which can be reconfigured to house a large number of special operation forces, including all their equipment. The submarine also features a large lock-in/lock-out chamber for divers. In Virginia Class submarines, traditional periscopes have been displaced by two photonics masts that house color, high-resolution black and white, and infrared digital cameras on top of telescoping arms. With the removal of conventional periscopes, the control room has been moved down one deck and away from the hull's curvature. This provides more room and an improved layout that provides commanding officers with enhanced situational awareness. Additionally, through the extensive use of modular construction, open architecture, and commercial off-the-shelf components, the Virginia Class is designed to remain state-of-the-art for its entire operational life. The submarine will constantly be updated with new systems and payloads as they become available. The Montana has unmatched stealth and strike capacity.

Andrew Leembruggen The top drawer stuff is not for sale. Also, Beijing is closer to Berlin than Brisbane. From Australia’s northern sea border to the Chinese sea border off Hainan is 4000km. Thats the distance from Germany to Afghanistan, or Peru to the US, or Poland to China. Do we really think of Poland as being close to China? If Indonesia were a threat then I could see it, but.... Australia has some new attack sub program with the French believe. USS Virginia class is way overkill for Aussie mission.
