Bringing up the Beast Pretenders reminds me of the Wolf one the Thew reviewed like a month-ish ago. I could go for Generations style Beast pretenders. We're already getting some non-beast ones, making them Predacons or Maximals would be fun.

Is it weird that 1988 is my favorite year of G1? Strong colors for both sides, very strong Pretender designs (before they got ridiculous; oh my gosh the Mega Pretenders and Ultra Pretenders are so dumb), continuation of gimmicks that had been around for either 3 years or just 1, the return of Optimus Prime with a banger of a toy… Primus, it was so fun. Admittedly, my love for this year comes from modern toys of these characters (namely POTP Dreadwind, Siege Spinister, and Evolution Needlenose; can’t wait for Quake, especially after what IDW2 did with him), but still. It was the last great year G1 had before the Micromaster/Action Master one-two punch that killed the franchise for three years. There’s a lot of 88-era characters I’d love to see redos of, but here’s just a few: *Slapdash* (because hey, you can get a free Energon Prowl retool out of him) *Getaway* (he deserves better than a half-baked Chromedome retool) *Dreadwind and Blackwing* (both. Both would be good, especially as Voyagers) *Waverider* (there’s potential for a Nautica retool in this lad) *Carnivac* (if we’re doing a half-shell, half-robot design, he’d look absolutely METAL with a ripped up organic beast mode with exposed robot flesh underneath the fleshy bits) *Quickswitch* (Titans Return did him very dirty; I want my edgy cowboy, dang it!) *Powermaster Optimus Prime* (greatest leader of his time; Armada OP proves a super mode can be done at Commander budget)

I got Beastbox and Squawktalk when I was a kid. I really liked them but had only one problem with them, mainly Squawktalk. Since he formed the legs of Squawkbox, they had added some very slight projections on the backside of the legs/wings to make him more stable when standing. While they did help with stability and actually made it look like a more authentic cassette, it made putting him in Soundwave's chest and getting him back out quite difficult.

I love the Pretender Beast idea, since they feel right at home more as Beast Wars *prototypes* more than anything. Realistic Pretender shells might not be a good idea anymore, but if you gave the beasts modernized designs, they would perfectly fit into their dedicated factions. Catilla is a saber-toothed tiger, most likely Tigatron's superior before the latter joined the Axalon, and Chainclaw is like a guerilla who seems like he can handle heavy weapons with his bear body.

Personally I've never been a fan of Overlord. If he was a tripple changer like Blitzwing or a combiner where both of the vehicles had individual robot modes like they did with Titans Return Battletrap then I'd love him but as he is, I just don't care for a single robot splitting off into indipendant vehicles. I'm also not a fan of the Pretender gimmick but there is one who would be on my list. 10. Spinister 9. Quake 8. Needlenose 7. Quickmix I do generally like the Decepticon Target Masters more than the Autobots but Quickmix was an exception. They only barely made the list at all cause I'm not really a fan of the "Master" gimmicks but Target Masters are the better of them since you still have a functional Transformer even if you loose the weapons. 6. Submarauder because I'm a sucker for anything aquatic so even though I really don't care for the Pretenders he makes my list. 5. Metalhawk had to make the list for the same reasons mentioned in the video. Even without the Pretender shell he's the only one where the inner Robot actually looks good. 4. Doubledealer 3. Quickswitch 2. Powermaster Optimus Prime who is only going at number 2 because I cheated for my number 1 1. Piranacon Yep I'm putting a whole freaking combiner as my number 1. Alternatively, I could put them on the list as separate figures but then they're taking up 6 spots. 10. Nautilator 9. Tentakil 8. Seawing 7. Skalor 6. Overbite 5. Doubledealer 4. Snaptrap 3. Quickswitch 2. Apex Bomber I figure if I'm including the other combiners as seperate figures I gotta include him seperatly too. 1. Powermaster Optimus Prime Either way I'm including the Seacons cause they're my favorite thing of the year.

The big gigantic spacemen wasn't supposed to be that. They was supposed to be humans. That's when imagination comes into play. Ain't no mass shifting in real life, so your imagination would have to be strong to play with the Autobot Pretenders
With the Galvatron stopped being on shelves in 1988, who was the Decepticon leader for the toyline? Which Decepticon still available now had the highest rank in the tech specs to go against Powermaster Optimus Prime?
@palaguin10 ай бұрын
Scorponok, I imagine.
@OptimusPhillip10 ай бұрын
Good question. In the comics, Scorponok took over the leadership of the Decepticons when his toy came out in 1987, and Bludgeon would take up the mantle after his release in 1989. But none of the new toys from 1988 took over leadership of the Decepticons in American fiction. Japanese fiction, on the other hand, made Overlord into the Decepticon leader for Super God Masterforce. But that toy never came out in the US, so...

Powermaster Optimus Prime would obviously be at #1, but it's actually due to the Japan-original add-on in the form of Godbomber. If you have the damn armor, Powermaster Prime would be even more amazing, but most likely the Japanese version of Super Ginrai is given a slight tweak to make it work. In fact, the God Ginrai toy was used for its Commemorative Series re-release, and it brought in Godbomber as a special armor most anyone would have used in canon. The name of Apex Armor would see use in the Aligned/Prime timeline, and it made it tied to the Thirteen (particularly Solus Prime) as a result. And, AND, with the fact that Star Convoy is the Thirteenth Prime after Age of the Primes, it made me think G1 Solus Prime could have originated from the planet Master as a result. I mean, how could the Pretenders get their hands on the Bomber Project blueprints as if it anticipated them with zero struggle!?
