@@skystreak1983 I guess, but it just kinda feels like cheating, since while he could be found at the very end of 2020, he was primarily around for most of 2021. If I had to lock him to one specific year, he’d be 2021, since there weren’t any other kingdom figures on this list either.

I’ve got a few of these figures and I agree, they’re just so good especially Cyclonus. Pro tip: if you don’t have his target master partner, there’s should be a siege sparkles target master that serves as a great substitute in terms of appearance. It won’t fix the yellowing, but it makes him look good. The Black Zarak recolor even took the Scorponok mold and managed to deliver more as well (I personally name the Titan Dark Scorponok in reference to the TF energon figure, the Titan master Zarak, and the headformer Olin as an extra reference

Jet Shatter is fantastic. I’d love to see the basic design given a G1-ification. Snapdragon is, I think, definitely stronger than Apeface. Earthrise Prime was just about perfect until we got to Studio Series 86. Gigawatt is absolutely outstanding. Amazing use of the base engineering. Lio is one of the few modern MPs I kind of regret passing on. Super Megatron is absolutely fantastic. Great and menacing in robot mode, two awesome alt modes. No complaints about Sky-Lynx. The commander class is well worth its cost. My preference for Scorponok is his smaller Marvel version, but the Titan is amazing. I even sprung for the Black Zarak version. Cyclonus is a work of art. AMAZING transformation origami.

Masterpiece Lio Convoy is actually the reason I stopped collecting the MP line. While having the 2 lion heads for accuracy is clever, the transformation was so complicated I had to watch a video everytime to get it right, and whenever I handled it specs of paint would fly everywhere. The straw that broke the camel's back was the arms breaking on me when I was transforming it to put it back in the box. After that I got the Legacy one and never looked back.

Er prime's proportion issues aren't due to the arms or legs it's the torso. There are 2 styles to take when it comes to a prime torso. short top half w/ tall lower half, or tall top half w/ short lower half. Er prime has both short top and bottom halfs of the torso.

My top 10 - 10) Snapdragon 9) Gigawatt 8) Astrotrain 7) Runamuck 6) Cliffjumper 5) Ironworks 4) Centurion (This one was special. When they introduced the weaponizers, my brain when to the Centurions. A toyline from the 80s that had a similar gimmick. Attaching weapons and tools into peg-and-posts found all over the action figure. I thought this was a shout out to those who might remember and see the connection). 3) Hotlink 2) Scourge 1) Cyclonus.

hot take apparently, sharing parts does not inherently make something a retool. sure, ER prime has a few bits of his legs shared with siege, but like 97% of the figure is new. thats a new toy that takes a couple bits from an old toy. to me, a retool needs to visably share engineering and design aspects with another figure. something like vector prime being made from jhiaxus would fall under retool to me, as even though he's got new parts and a new look, there is still very much the jhiaxus skeleton and transformation there.
@honteebee
@honteebee 4 күн бұрын
but that's........a retool. idk how you can have a "take" in this case, it's a word definition. "retool" does cover THAT wide a spectrum and isn't inherently associated with a particular trait/quality. legacy chromia is a retool and legacy devcon is a retool, there can be good and bad retools but doesn't mean the extensive ones stop being a retool the problem really is the perception the tf community these days has toward it, like it's becoming some sort of a dirty word when it just /is/
@kyu4903
@kyu4903 4 күн бұрын
"retool" to me implies that a figure is based on the engineering of another figure. siege and earthrise prime may share a couple parts, but they are so vastly different in every other aspect that saying that earthrise prime is based on siege prime is just incorrect. as I said, they are two entirely seperate toys that do entirely seperate things that happen to share a few elements. retools to me are like metalhawk, vector prime, ruckus, figures that are clearly based on the design and engineering of another figure, while also doing their own thing.
@honteebee
@honteebee 4 күн бұрын
(also just to be clear a retool requires there to be reused parts be it internal or external, since I know inversely this community also likes to accuse any new figure as being a retool just bcs it transforms similarly to a previous one. there ARE figures that share similar engineering/design cues but are completely unrelated otherwise)
@kyu4903
@kyu4903 4 күн бұрын
If you want to say that earthrise prime us a retool because he has maybe a couple parts shared in the legs, go for it. All I'm saying is that because literally EVERYTHING else is new, I don't think it's fair to say he's based on siege prime in any way. They look different, they transform different, I view them as entirely separate figures
@honteebee
@honteebee 4 күн бұрын
idk man I mean you do you but I don't know how there can be "to me" or that it's "unfair to call a figure a retool" when it's just a word that has an objective definition. a retool just means a new use of a mold that changes/removes/adds parts regardless of how much. it doesn't have any more meaning than that, no quality or quantity traits inherently attached to it so idk why you're arguing against it. it's just a word that the designers use to explain their process (or it /should/ be at least)

*The Modern Hasbro Business model:* Release a Good but, strangely flawed, version of a figure. Wait for everyone to buy it. Release the Improved version they know everyone will REALLY want instead, compelling a nigh back-to-back, double-dip for the masses. Rinse and repeat. Even better if they structure their lines in such a way that they have a "baked-in excuse" for doing this. Aka: Cybertronian and Earth modes for Seige and Earthrise. Gives them an excuse to re-release nearly everyone back-to-back. Mark my words: Hasbro KNEW fans would have a problem with Studio 86' Magnus being so widely out of scale (hint, hint, wink, wink). Again: Good yet, strangely flawed figures. We WILL be getting yet ANOTHER Studio Magnus in the future. Just watch.

Before I get to my 2020 top ten list... A bit of an oversight with my last list because for some reason TFWiki did not mention that the Deluxe class Cyberverse toys were a thing yet. It completely skipped over the first two waves of these figures. Those were the best toys in the line and the started out really strong... only to get progressively worse but I'm still going to include a few of what I would consider the best ones on this list. Also, I'm going to make this an honorable mention again because it's an extensive retool of the Siege Sideswipe mold. I think only the arms, hips, feet, and maybe some internal transformation parts are actually shared between them, everything else is all new molding. Giggawatt, I actually got this guy FIRST before Ectrotron because I was able to find mine at Wal Mart. Game Stop doesn't ever carry Ectotron in stock, you have to preorder him and then pick him that was and I did not know that when the first run of them came out so I only got Ectotron this year when it was rereleased with Frozen Empire. Giggawatt I was able to get right when it came out. My only real issue with Giggawatt is that it is capable of mimicking the look from the first two movies but Back to the Future 3 is completely left out. There is room on the figure for a potential repaint/retool because in order to get a back to the future 3 look it needs a new paint job cause the car was rusted from being left in a cave for 100 years, they need to remold the part of the hood that flips around for his chest because there was extra equipment added to the hood in that movie, and his gun needs to be remolded to add a train hitch because the gun actually stores in the vehicle mode right where the train hitch was added in the third movie. I happen to live right near where the third movie was filmed and the actual train station from the movie still sells Back to the Future 3 merchandise in the gift shop. I kind of want them to do a BTTF3 version of Giggawatt and maybe a retool of Astrotrain as the train from that movie cause if Hasbro could make those toys happen I could probably walk down to the train station and pick them both up from the gift shop instead of going to Wal Mart or another major retailer. 10. Paleotrex: I bought this guy just because his head is designed to look like the weird mace weapon the original Optimus Primal toy had and I like how creepy this guy looks. The fact that they break apart and reassemble makes a lot more sense to me with the more organic bone aesthetic. Though I will say this guy HURTS like his robot head gets stuck inside the dino skull and the amount of force needed to pull it apart with the spikes on his head literally hurts to take him apart. How is a kid suppose to play with this thing? There's another reason I'm ranking him this low and I'll get to that later. 9. Thunderhowl: I'm putting him very low on the list because I will admit this figure has some issues. Some of the joints are a little loose on my copy of the figure and he's not as good as I really wanted him to be. However I am still including him because I love the design and the transformation for this figure is actually really involved considering the toy line and the price point. Also considering it's a beast figure you'd kinda expect the transformation to be just stand him up, straightening out the legs, and fold the chest down but this guy literally splits in half down the middle in order to get the proportions more correct between his two modes. If the QC were better he'd be a lot higher on the list but I still love this figure. 8. Vertibreak: Visually I really like this gal. I wish she did something to integrate into the Fossilizer gimmick with the other figures but the Scout class figures don't really do anything. I still really like the look though and I almost never like anything smaller than a Deluxe enough to even bother mentioning them but this is one figure that I actually almost considered buying because I like the look of it so much. I actually regret NOT getting it and have considered going back and getting her along with the other two fossilizers so I can complete the bone pile. I don't like the repaint, I prefer these figures when they're in the more natural colors. Whenever they get repainted into bright unnatural colors I hate them. But the first run molds in the more natural Earthy tones, I love how they look and Vertibreak is no exception to that so I had to include her. 7. Hammerbyte: This is a figure I didn't even know about until I happen to stumble across it in the wild. That almost NEVER happens cause I'm always watching online for upcoming releases but this figure actually surprised me. I love sharks so I picked him up not expecting much because it's Warrior Class and those figures tended to all have intrusive gimmicks that barely worked. This figure not only does his gimmick actually work the way it's suppose to but it doesn't hinder his articulation in any way. I love this figure! I would rank it higher except for one flaw... I don't understand why the robot head is on a hinge, It's not part of the transformation cause his head can just stay where it is in robot mode, it's not a point of articulation cause it makes it look like his neck is broken if you use it. It's a completely pointless hinge. If they put that on a swivel or a ball joint so he can actually turn his head instead of attaching it to a pointless hinge that doesn't do anything I'd move him up to number 4. 6. Optimus Primal: On his own a really good figure. He's deceptively complicated to transform. He's got his swords, his arm mounted blasters, pretty much everything I would want this figure to have he has. And I bought him with Paleotrex... the big problem and why both of these figures aren't higher on the list... he has no ports. There is no way for him to actually use the Fossilizer gimmick. No official way anyway. Another KZbinr who goes by BotBenderOrinj came up with a couple fan modes for Paleotrex that kind of allow him to form armor around Primal. He came up with 2 different configurations and then I used that as inspiration to come up with my own configuration which I actually posted on my KZbin which is how I have them displayed now. I still really like the figures it's good to encourage some creativity, but since these are technically fan modes I'm not judging them based on that and I'm still going to knock them down a few pegs because the official configuration for Paletrex's Fossilizer armor modes are impossible to do with Primal. It feels like Paletrex was specifically designed to go with Primal due to the mace weapon reference but the beast figures ironically can't officially use the fossilizers. Only the vehicle characters actually have the ports to be able to armor up with. And I don't think the more organic looking Fossilizers even look good on the Autobots and Decepticons. These two together could have easily made number 2 on the list if they were actually capable of combining in an official capacity. And I still really love the figures, they still made the list, but they got knocked down a bit because of the whole fan mode is the only way I could make them work the way I wanted.

5. Cyberverse Arcee: Some people might not like this figure because of the whole giant back pack of vehicle mode shell but in this case that's entirely accurate to her animation model. I still really like Arcee and she does manage to stand up despite having all that weight on her back. 4. SS Cliffjumper: Apparently this is a retool of Offroad Bumblebee which came out the same year even though it's not a first run mold, it came out the same year so I'm counting it. I don't know how they turned a Jeep that looks like Sweendle into this cybertrian vehicle mode so that alone is pretty damn impressive. Another reason I'm including Cliffjumper specifically is because I honestly don't like this mold as either of the Bumblebees. As already mentioned making him a Jeep just makes him look like Swindle. Plus I freaking HATE the design of movie Bumblebee's robot head. With the battle mask on it's not so bad and that's usually how I tend to always display mine if I ever get them. But ironically Cliffjumper's head looks more like a proper Bumblebee head than the actual Bumblebee. Oddly enough this version of the mold won't be released as B-127 till next year but I honestly wish they just repainted this head sculpt yellow and made that the Bumblebee design for the movie instead of the Bayverse head. So I'm including Cliffjumper in my list just for that reason. I actually love the vehicle mode and the head sculpt on this version. 3. Blackarachnia: It took us a really long time to get a show accurate Beast Wars Blackarachnia figure and it does not disappoint. This is basically exactly what I always imagined this figure would be. I have looked at this figure multiple times in the store, considering buying it and the only thing stopping me from actually getting it is because Transformers have gotten so expensive at this point that I can't afford to buy out the entire line of Kingdom Beast Wars figures no matter how good I think they look. If I bought this that would have just sent down a rabbit hole where I was going to end up buying ever Beast Wars toy that came out. I had to be really picky with what figures I picked up and unfortunately that meant missing out on what I consider one of the best figures of the toy line at that time. There is only thing that annoys me and that's the fact that they made a toy accurate color scheme for this figure which, who asked for that? But they still have not made a Trigger repaint of this mold. I just want a two pack of Blackarachnia and Rhinox in their alternate colors from the Trigger and Dark Designs respectively. Hasbro makes the Trigger repaint then I'm going to get that and go back to get the original. 2. Snapdragon: We talked about Apeface in the last video might as well talk about Snapdragon now. This is a HUGE improvement over the original toy fixing some issues with the proportions and unlike Apeface this one doesn't have any unsightly kibble. There are the wings hanging off his robot arms/beast legs but I don't mind that. I thought about including Double Dealer on this list but that figure does have some ugly kibble to it so I kicked him off. These vehicle/beast triple changers are kind of rare but I genuinely think Snapdragon pulls it off the best. I also like how his Titan Master also plays a role in forming the head of the beast mode with his legs forming the lower jaw articulation. It gives him something more unique to do in beast mode and is another reason I like Snapdragon so much better than Apeface who just goes into his regular head mode but covered by a big monkey head. Unlike Apeface he doesn't have a Titan Master toy to use as an extra head with a tiny version of himself he can use as a weapon but I still like the figure all on it's own. 1. King Poseidon/God Neptune: And now I cheat. I cheat a lot. So both of these figures came out in the same year. They were both Generations Selects releases. And regardless of if you get the set of 6 in G1 colors or the set of 5 in Beast Wars II colors they're still really good figures. Not only am I cheating by including a combiner team but also because they're technically heavy retools of existing molds. I'm also going to point out that Scylla is a retool of Tentakill and not just a straight repaint. Oddly enough the mold was originally female, retooled male, then retooled female again. Cause according to TFWiki this was originally the Moonracer mold which is female, then it was Tentakill who is male, and then it got retooled into Scylla who is female. They could have got lazy and made Scylla just a straight repaint like the original toy but they actually went to the effort of remolding her for cartoon accuracy. I want to say they remolded the mouth on the beast mode as well to give her bigger lips but maybe I'm just imagining that. Cause I know that was a thing in the BWII anime where she would try to kiss the Maximal squid guy. But anyway I love Aquatic transformers, we got two teams of aquatic combiners... really one team and a team of repaints with one retool. And it's also impressive that they still maintain the gimmick of all the limb bots also having a weapon mode that King Poseidon can hold especially considering they're all retools of existing Combiner Wars and Power of the Primes molds that were not originally designed with this function in mind. Part of the reason it works is just by shoving their weapons into the port where their hand/foot would usually plug in but that's the way the original toys worked too. If I had more money and Generations Selects weren't so damn expensive I would have bought all of these. And if you're wandering "Well why did you include the Seacones being extensive retools of existing molds but not Ectotron or Giggawatt?" because bang for your buck, that's why. The collaborative figures left out some features that I thought they should have but didn't and they felt a tad bit too expensive for what they were. These actually do everything I want them to do. Also as previously established I'm a sucker for anything with an aquatic alt mode so it's my list and I love me some Seacons. I'm going to admit I'm being bias here but it's my list and I fully expect that my number 1 will not be TJ's number 1. Honestly I'm kind of predicting Scorponok who I had considered but bumped off.

It feels wrong to have a Kingdom toy as #1 for 2020. I know the first wave of the new line is often available before the end of the year, but then then you end up ranking toys from the same year-long line in two separate videos.
