It’s a Harry Potter universe game - and also really super fun. I think those are the reasons for its popularity, not some boycott. Hey, I’m not going to start drinking Budweiser because the other crowd boycotts it. Budweiser still tastes like ass. I don’t really mean to take sides in this. You're confusing sex and gender. The reason people get surgery (i.e. change their physical sex) is to make it match with their gender (i.e. the psychological part) which is what you can't change. It's just like your attraction: you don't "choose" whether you're attracted to the same gender or not. Similarly, your gender is just what it is. When people say "gender is not a choice" that's what they mean. But in daily parlance the terms are often switched and confused with each other, so I get the confusion.

It can be seen especially concerning teenagers who suffer from gender dysphoria. Most of them naturally grows out from it. BTW sexual preferences may be not something that you just choose, but they're not set in stone either. Women are shown to change their sexual preference from hetero- to homosexual more likely than men. Also sex is something you can clearly determine by examining the body but 'gender' is based on your own declarations. It really is hard to claim that 'your gender is just what it is' when you can live for 50 years as a man, have wife and children and then came out as a woman. You can claim of course that such a person was always a woman, but how can we be sure that they were wrong then and are right now and not the other way around?

This is the most trans inclusive game I have ever played. Nothing is gender locked - all hairstyles available (I had a hard time deciding between a higher pitched version of the masculine voice or a lower pitched version of the feminine voice). You don't even pick a gender. The closest is whether you identify as a witch or as a wizard and that just changes which bedroom you have.

They have polyjuice potions, transfiguration spells, and even characters who can change their bodies at will. An actual character within such a world could truly change their sex and would have nothing in common with "trans" people. The reason it isn't perfect is probably intentionally so that trans people can feel kinship that the character exists like them. Or more likely the left can see a stereotypical trans person in the setting.

So in other words... Not a transphobic game. But my guess is that they added that character just to distance themselves from JK Rowling. That sounds like a smart move. Would've been better if they made a transgender character an important part of the story though. I'm sure there is an important character that could've easily been transgender without having any real impact on the story. Better yet, have that character voiced by someone trans. I don't buy into this boycott the game thing, but you have to think about the numbers too. It's a business. They knew this game had the potential to be very controversial, so they should've done more to make sure it wasn't. They could've hired more members of the LGBT community. Again, this is a business, so this isn't about them taking a stand. This is about them knowing the market and doing what it takes to increase sales.
