Here's Everything WRONG With My CHEAP Survivor *1992 Mercury Capri XR2*

I bought this 1992 Mercury Capri XR2 for the smoking price of $2,500. It's a coupe, it has a Mazda drivetrain, it's turbo'd it's intercooled, it's a manual, and it's fun to drive. Nothing could go wrong right? Wrong. It's all broke and today, we start solving problem after problem to make this car worthy of it's doorstop shape. I didn't really plan on fixing everything today but that just sort of happened, there's not to much left to fix after this!

I'm curious where the "$700 for everything" came from? The dealer? I popped over to rockauto and Cardone calipers are about $60 a pop, Raybestos rotors are about $17 each, Centric front pads are $20 for both fronts and about $18 for both rears. Hell - Even napa's parts were only slightly more expensive.

The Fox Chassis Capris weren't even the first ones. They actually came out in the early 70's here in the US and are quite beloved in the UK. They were originally called the Ford Capri as well. The V6 was a nice engjne to have in those, or at least the 2.0L OHC inline 4. They could be modded and tuned quite well.

Chose one of these over a miata back in ‘93, needed the extra practicality of a back seat and boot for. Had it for 8 years, loved it, but when it came time to get back into a small convertible 10 years later I bought a ‘90 miata because it was going to be easier to source spare parts as it got older. A shame, the Capri was a sweet handling little front driver, and had less scuttle shake than either of my miatas.

Ford-Pilkington glass for the windshield. You can order from down under for $135AUS (www.autoglasswarehouse.com.au/ford-capri-sa-1-1989-to-1-1994-2dr-convertible-fro). Could, not can, they closed down auto manufacturing in Australia after building some epic cars. Ford Australia now designs epic cars including the new Bronco that we don't get here in Australia. We got this Capri in Australia badged Ford Capri in Right hand drive and they were built at the Ford Homebush plant which later closed and the site was repurposed for the Sydney Olympics in 2000. The Capri was based on the Ford Laser/Mazda 323 platform.

The Ford Laser was the Escort over here. My uncle was a huge Mopar nut, but he had an Escort hatchback and the wagon. Oddly enough, his wife had the Mazda 323 which was basically the same car. Later, he got the Dodge Dakota R/T when it first came out and my aunt got the Mazda MX6 which was basically a Probe and they trashed Ford, even though his wife was basically driving a Ford and he still needed to drive his Escort and we rally raced his Escort a few times. I don't know how the Laer did in Australia, but here in Florida, the Escort soaked up the dirt, sand, swamp and snakes just fine. We speedball raced in his truck from the panhandle of Florida to Key Largo. We took the MX6 to a race around the state and it did horrible. It's always neat to hear about the different vehicles people get in other countries and how well they do, or don't lol

Good eye! You're right! That Fiero was rear mid engine, also similar to the Toyota MR2. Nothing wrong with the design, except the American market wasn't ready for it at that time. The *1986 Fiero GT* was one of my favorites American designs by then; it looked a little wider than the original one. I had a Mercury Caprí XR2 for couple of years, it was like a go kart, very nice! w/Mazda technology but far from the RX7's performance and the Miata. Remember the Fiat 1/9? (1979//1982) Rear mid engine, it was avant-garde and the japanese got seduced by the Italians designs rather than the quality )ö(. The MR2 was very similar and came on 1982. Salud!

My buddy's family had one of the original Capris from the 70s with a tiny v6 in it. I also remember the 80s one based on the Mustang and remember another friend's buddy doing a huge burnout on the street in front of his house, pretty sure it was a brand new one with the 5.0. I don't think I remember this version but the turbo and convertible makes it interesting and rare. So many versions of that name were sold here back in the day.

I still have manuals for them. The Fox Chassis was heavier, but had better power options, especially the V8. Those were only produced from '79 to '86, though supposedly some were made for '87 before they cancelled the program. I tried to get behind this one when it came out, but the FWD and lack of real power just kind of did it in for me. Besides, I still was in love with my '86 bubbleback Capri with the 5.0L!

I dunno how useful this is, or if you've already figured it out, but that Capri shares most of it's underpinnings with the same year Ford Escorts, but it seems like auto parts stores should know that.

My cousin has one in Australia she decided not to fix it up, worth only $A1000 now, we had a problem with them in Australia of soft top leaks, like them OK, but preferred the original Ford Capri I had one a 3 litre V6.... went like a rocket!

Thank you for keeping it factory stock, although it could use a nicer set of alloy wheels.

They were in production in Oz from 1989-94. Maybe parts can be found down under. Found the windshield for $165(AU) from an Australian vendor... but they don't seem to ship, pickup only. Know anyone down there?

It would be cool to buy a modernish wrecked ford or Mazda fwd car to completely swap out the fwd power train.

Your actually wrong you could fix the crack in the windshield, check out Sixtyfiveford on KZbin, Video Title, Repair a Cracked Windshield at Home, he repaired one that was worse than yours, it even passed Colorado vehicle inspection after.
