When doing my research ahead of buying my Ferrari 550 Maranello, I of course encountered a video by the one and only @Doug DeMuro - however, now having owned the car for a little bit, I think he got a few things wrong. Here's my response to his video, with a few quirks and features mentioned that I think he missed.

Taking into account the amount of videos he make is expected some errors on small things like "there are two ways of turning off the disabler" , i can bet you even some long term ferrari owners dont know about this detail and some of these nitpicks. We also have to remember that he has no team behind him like magazines and other big car channels.

Isopropylalcohol is in often the no. 1 sleeve trick when you tackle projects like, removing difficult goo/sticky stuff/degreasing delicate surfaces. It's powerful but gentle at the same time.

When I bought my 575, 7 years ago, I drove it the 500kms home..I filled the 85lt tank up twice..I calculated 33lt/100 km. I was driving spiritedly a lot. And when I got home I pulled out the manual to CJD the specs and that's exactly what it said. On a highway cruise I will get it down to around 16lt/100km. Someone once told me this particular engine was the thirstiest ever made..I can believe it. But it's only money and the 575 is a fabulous car to own and drive.

Still remember when I test drove my first 550. The button for the trunk was broken and the sales guy told me there's sadly no way to access the trunk right now but they will fix it. Thankfully I watched not only Dougs video but also Harry's very good and extensive inside into the Maranello. I still don't know why Doug didn't mention it but oh well...it would have been such a nice quirk...and a feature ;) Love the Jay, that's exactly how it is: replaces your savings with happiness.

I’m a former owner of two 360 Spiders. I bought and drove and sold an F1 version, then bought and drove and sold a 3 pedal version. I lost the use of my legs which was the reason I had to sell the second one. Love your 550 though. Always have liked that model. Drive it in good health.

I just saw a 550 on a 2-lane road near Evergreen Colorado while riding our Can Am Spyder RTL. It was going the opposite way so it was a very short view. It is certainly a very, very beautiful car!! May you always have good luck with your 550. Enjoy the hell out of it.

I want to make a joke but frankly the difficulty that has faced James in becoming successful in this arena is not a laughing matter. Doug Demuro and his ilk have created a car culture on KZbin that values sensationalism and yelling over information. Ahh yes 90's immobilisers. My Saab 9000 Aero is the same with Saabs "VSS" system. Get in the car, spend a min just sorting yourself out. Go to start it and nothing.... So you have to press the button on the fob again and it will start. Still catches me out to this day and ive been driving it for over 15 years !.

philbertonice, would have been the Fiat Coupé if they’d have gone with it. Pininfarina put the design forward, Fiat went with their in house design, so Pininfarina took it to Peugeot. Apparently. Only learnt that the other week.

No, the truth is Pininfarina offered the design to Ferrari first to be body of the Ferrari 360. Ferrari turned down the offer and it went to Peugeot instead for the Peugeot 406. It is quite obvious that it was designed for the Ferrari 360 because the design is an evolution of the shape of the F355.

A lot of your comments are spot on and a non issue. The alarm on my 95 m5 operates the same as is the case on my 1997 P- car 993. All other issues are just quirks nothing I’d loose sleep over. Congratulations on your car and enjoy many miles in the car.

I think it's worth saying that Doug likes his videos to be approximately 28mins upwards and needs to find things to be controversial about......that said and having just checked Doug's 550 video was only 12.29 minutes so imagine how short it would be without said mistakes! Plus he was overwhelmingly positive about the 550 and rightly so!!

James, if you do go for spacers you may also need to upgrade the wheel bearings otherwise there may be too much strain on them, keep up the good work.

Remember he only gets a few hours with each car. so he has to do some research beforehand and then only has a few hours to find as many quirky as possible. In his smoking tire podcast appearances he talks about how he went with a more general approach instead of the details so he reaches a wider audience. Hence why he has more subscribers versus someone like saabkyle, who focuses more on the actual details and statistics of the car

Wheels can often look dated on older cars, but with the 550 it’s not that bad. They could use 19 inch, when tastefully done this can update the look, but I would not say it’s really necessary. With the stock wheels, a slight spacing of the rear wheels (something like 5 mm, shims really) and slight drop (1 cm) would give it a more aggressive stance. I think the suspension is already adjustable, and those spacers will not break the bank, so I would say it’s worth a try. Watching your videos about the 550, I do think it’s the best looking of the V12 bunch, the 575 distinctly looks like a 550 with a hunchback and a big mouth, the 599 is a bit fussy in terms of styling and its back looks like a GT-R.

This was a really fun video and especially the intro was a lovely tribute, but I think many of the ridiculous things Doug said in his video (i did indeed stop watching yours to go and watch his one first) was probably just played up for comedy and not actually meant to be 100% serious, I noticed Doug does these things a lot in his videos. The immobilizer especially. I'd suspect Doug of many things, but certainly not of not knowing better - at least in this case, I don't honestly think he'd missed a simple obvious thing like this. I am genuinely happy for you to have gotten the opportunity to buy your dream car, i think that's really fun. I hope it doesn't break on you before you feel like you've driven it to your heart's content. Godspeed.

Finally a really nice whole-set representation of an 550 ownership. Love this car to death, love your car in particular (although I'd prefer different colour combination, but it's a matter of choice), love your videos about it too! Are you planning on detailing that car? The switches and space around ignition key lock - let's be honest - awful, even for a 20-yr old car. But I'd suppose it'll cost you a fortune to restore it to the "museum" state.

Great video as always. I like Doug’s videos as well. I own a FD RX7 Twin Turbo and his facts were all pretty much spot on with his video on that one. However he’s more entertainment than fact and that’s fine with me. He still gets to enjoy some great cars. I really enjoyed his video of the Vector W8, a very rare piece of machinery.

Sport button off is useful for when letting someone else drive the car. Plus this is no ordinary Ferarri, a long-distance cruiser, how did Doug miss that? I think Doug often just says whatever comes into his mind. I watch him now and again as it is entertaining. Not so much for his opinion on cars, which is lacking a lot in my view.

There's nothing wrong with Ebay wheel spacers. Spacers are just spacers. Shapes of metal. As long as the wheel nuts fit properly, they're perfectly safe. Regardless of whether you're in a Ford or a Ferrari. A "dedicated" company that sells you the same identical spacers at 4x the price, is having you on!

Too bad about the front overhang. Couldn't they increase the wheelbase of this model, which is more of a GT suitable for long trips? As for Doug, I still take a look at his auction site every day, lots of interesting models, even the occasional camper van (their prices are currently at ludicrous levels, even more than popular sports cars there), but it is really a seller's market the last year or so, only a suicidal or addict buyer would go there. ANd Doug has made millions from this outfit, getting a hefty 4%+ of the selling price as the site fee. One thing I hate about Cars&Bids is that Doug runs it with an iron hand, censors many posters whenever they threaten his profits by making comparisons of poor offerings to far better ones (on the same day and the same site). And while Doug's reviews point out both the good and the bad, every car on sale on cars&Bids gets a glowing paragraph by DOug pointing out only its good points, if any (Even the occasional YUGO).

It’s not scratches, it’s famous ‘sticky’ parts, which means plastic overlay over time get sticky and dirty

MrAaaVee Yeah unfortunately so many cars suffer from it. It’s that soft touch rubber coating. Looks great when new but never lasts. I was looking at a current spec Jaguar XJ and they suffered from the same issue. They cured it post 2012/2013 models but it’s that horrible sticky rubber rotting look. Sooooo nice. Lol.

Got to ask, how come you keep blurring the registration plate? It was on and off all over the video last week. I'm just curious. And I know you did mention it in its own video but the 550 wheelbase is so short. I never noticed all these years.

Short version: the plate on the car is going back to the previous owner. I had hoped to get my own plate on the car a month ago, but DVLA are taking forever - I blurred it out not to hide it per se but to try and avoid confusion when the proper plate went on. And I'm getting bored of blurring it hence it occasionally appears

I can honestly say that none of the quirks that come with a 550 are enough to make me buy another car or even bitch about the 550. It's a Ferrari.....enough said.
