@@Hi_Im_Akward if my community had a garden for everyone I would plant veggies there along with those I plant in my own yard. I figure I might be able to trade my veggies with others that way and not have so much left over. I do a lot of canning and I used to can everything I grew but we didn’t use it all. And it’s hard sometimes to find people to give it to if you’re retired and not going out to work every day. A community garden would be fun too.

That's a great concept! For me, however, it's a challenge. I'm mid-fifties, only found out in the last few years I'm AuDHD (and I am an "acquired taste") and live off-grid in Arizona. I'm horribly honest and socially inept (what I intend to convey and what people interpret me to be saying are often not the same), the only social media I'm on is KZbin, and most of the other people who live out here voted for 47. How on earth do people like me find community IRL? 🕊️

I am a dutch woman so I've grown up with the knowledge what this type of regime is from the inside out. I think your permaculture mindset will be very helpful during these difficult times. * You can see the big picture. How things interconnect and effect each other. Be careful and strategic. * You know nature will do whats in its nature. As will twitler and his likes. Trying to change his nature or get annoyed by it will not help. Its a waste of time. Be prepared and have a plan B. Or work with their nature. * Twitler will F up whats usually considered normal. The things you take for granted aren't there anymore. People think expensive eggs are bad. Try having no food at all. So food storage is kinda smart especially if its long term storage. Again permaculture and homesteading is very smart right now. * have a reliable social network to fall back on if need be. But watch out, you might not be able to trust everyone.

I substitute canned and frozen vegetables which use the less than perfect vegetables and cuts down on food waste. And I recgnize, that I am part of the elite in that I can make these choices.

I DO have room for gardening, but, it's not smart to buy permaculture ( I foolishly forget that and bought a lingonberry and raspberry plants, but not very many...!) So, not smart to buy permaculture, at this time. Best to buy camping tools and equipment, which I also have bought some of, though I haven't "bitten the bullet" and have not bought a power supply with solar - DO you think we should?? In an apartment? Apartments could certainly lose power but are also usually the last ones they'd deliberately turn off. I'd buy one of those nice batteries around $100-200 to be able to have emergency power first. You could easily have things like that for an emergency charged up sitting in a closet.

find a place to donate your garden surplus. Focus on reducing debt and building a cash cushion. Support small business and pay them in cash so they don't have to give a chunk to the credit card companies. If you somehow did not stock up on canning supplies during covid, get that now. I started pressure canning during covid and it is nice to have protein on the shelf. Get your seeds early, there may be increased interest in gardening again. See if your local gardening groups have a seed exhange coming up this spring. Only plant what you know you can handle and what you will eat, preserve, swap or donate. Get scheduled maintenance for HVAC, cars etc who knows how much tariffs will add to those prices. Strengthen your community network. Grow/ eat more plants in general, but expect shortages in migrant labor dependent crops.

We have set up a seed buying club here as well as a tree and shrub buying club. There are many single people here who cannot use a whole packet of seeds (does ANYONE actually plant ALL the zucchini seeds in a packet?) but we want variety and we want to share, so we set up a way to have 4-6 people sharing a single packet of seeds but getting a wide variety of options to try and enjoy. The trees come thru the soil and water conservation org. And they arrive in bundles of 10. Same thing. I don’t want 10 crabapples, but I do want three… so we are splitting/sharing the order and each getting more varieties than we could get on our own. Very excited for this new feeling of communal caring and sharing!

Sorry..., but..., I'm a big gardener and have abundant food for many families each year so I started and continue to grow a food forest, permaculture style, thanks to you. Last year I managed to harvest many gallons of fruit. This year will be better because it will be the second year of harvest, 5th year of growth. Felon 47's first term impressed upon me to grow sustainably. I raise hens for eggs, turkeys and ducks. I never sell produce but give it away in a heartbeat or for help on this homestead. I'll be continuing to plant the food forest out. This year will be the first wheat/barley/amaranth grain field in the spring for fall harvest, mostly for animal feed. I might build out a bus that I bought and do a tour of Canada in the fall. Lots of plans, lol. Some will happen.

If you have some space, a great plant for food and medicine (specifically arthritis) is stinging nettle. They're perennial and show up very early with super nutritious greens that can also be dried to use as tea. Super nutrient dense, tasty and grows like a weed with no effort. It sounds crazy, but if you intentionally sting achy joints with the plant, it can stop the pain, sometimes for days or weeks at a time. Well worth the few minutes of stinging feeling. Also great for allergies.

I have been growing certain veggies for years. I grow mainly in pots and one raised bed. I am in a Southern state, so my main efforts in the summer is watering. I grow what we eat. Never grow what you don't like to eat. My main crops are tomatoes, peppers, onions, green and dry beans, lettuce and spinach. No weeding only organic fertilizer. If you have land grant universities, call the office that has the 4H and Master Gardeners. I'm a MG and learned so much from this organization, plus we have a goal statement about helping others learn valuable food and flower growing skills. I buy what we don't grow at o local farmer's market. Im totally organic. Too much agricultural waste and fertilizer is contaminating our underwater aquifers. Stay alert and don't let your state legislature allow CAFOS, these are huge hog farms and they are polluting the land and the water. We won against a huge hog farm and caused them to shut down. They were located on Bigcreek, a tributary of the Buffalo, our countries first National river.

I’m doing the same. No experimentation this year. Only growing what I have the time, need, and will actually eat to preserve. A much smaller footprint for fresh eating. I can only container garden where I’m at so I removed all the bushes and use the beds for my containers. The grapevine runs along the garage and my “tea garden” is in the bed at the back of the garage. I will be adding echinacea to the tea garden as most of the teas can be used in homeopathic remedies as well. Our community garden has very reasonable prices for a space and they will give you a free one if you are willing to plant and let others in need harvest from it. I’ll do that this year because I saved so many seeds last year! Good luck everyone! We can do this.

From the U.K., just sowed excess seeds as last year I had a fair bit of failures due to U.K. weather and other environmental issues. But I plan to share the surplus. We may not be experiencing what you all are directly, but we’re in the shadow of the U.S. with many determined to align with that one and his cronies. It wouldn’t be a bad thing to prepare just in case those people drag us down. In plant terms, I’ve been interested in crops that can be eaten young to old for a while again, so that the harvest window is wider and I don’t have to berate myself for failing to harvest in time to eat young/fresh. This does mean beans mainly, but also peas, greens (baby leaf to more mature). We also have continued out landscaping this winter for our planned food forest area and thanks to your advice a couple of years ago, made sure to pick some fruit trees that harvest at different times rather than all at once. For example, should be able to harvest apples from late August to mid November in the future. Stay strong.

So many things to try to get your dirt more nutrient and to hold water longer. Grow your own worms, start composting, add back to the dirt, keep going, work the dirt and put most dead things back into it(research for best composting materials- should be things you already use). It will take time, but your dirt will change. Research for your area, look for edible perennials and any wild foods to forage or transplant. Keep going. Don’t give up. I have watched my high altitude dry land turn and surprise me every year. I’ll admit water is a major aspect of it and hard to maintain in some areas. I have told my husband, who didn’t think it was possible for me to make this progress, that I could not have done it without our well. It’s nowhere near where I want it to be but the little things my garden gives back each year are more than the years before when it was dust. Somethings take a long time to establish and give back…just keep trying and don’t beat yourself up. It’s not you, it’s nature, but nature can work for us with time. I loose things every year too. I’m just trying to be encouraging because I recognize some of the same feelings of defeat in your post. I have cried my eyes out, seen so much go to waste too…it hurts but I keep seeing things each year that excite me too so I keep trying and asking what will be the gift this year…2024, I was in my greenhouse and I said, Lord I just want to see something go crazy in here this year…well I had gotten a discounted beefsteak tomato plant that the guy thought was dreadful. It touched the 12ft roof and leaped off both ends of the bed that was at least 6ft long. The tomatoes were plenty but not all had time to mature as I am in an area with shorter growing seasons, still I got what I asked for, and I am going to see what’s next! Much love to you and your efforts. I wish I had a gardening buddy. I would totally love to help and exchange, or even donate from my garden to yours…it’s not the best but I love it 😍

Going to start winter sowing in plastic jugs (I'm in Ohio), and will be reusing kitty litter buckets for containers. Our county has a program where you go to free classes and get a voucher for a rain barrel. After last year's drought, I'm going to be on that like Gorilla Glue.

As you were talking about skills, it struck me that we’ve removed classes in education that teach sewing and wood working. We will need to be able to repair clothing and learning to replace buttons and see tears in children’s clothing and our own, a simple task if you know how. Fixing things around the house and your neighbor’s is another skill we can teach ourselves and others.

I haven't been following Angela for long as I only recently found this channel but she is very helpful and inspiring. In case Angela reads thru the comments... Hey, Hi! Im a local. Took a while before I realized your last name wasnt Parkrose but yr neighborhood and Im like, what?! I seem to follow channels that end up being either local or from Canada.🤷🏼‍♀️ I'm moving west, to some acreage in the Coast Range. I want to grow food and become more self sufficient; rely on grocery stores less and less. And have chickens. I miss having chickens but I'm currently on a lot thats less than 4000 square feet. The more videos i watch on this channel the more I related to you, even small details, like your hubby sounds a lot like mine and things you like, i like too. She knits, I crochet, she's raising boys, Im an empty nester who already raised hers. We both are mindful of using our DBT skills and like to share ideas for improving everyone's life. I really hope that at some point I run into you somewhere. I would love to learn more about permaculturing from you. The biggest difference Ive noticed is Angela says cheeto and I say orange f¥ckface. I think we can agree to disagree. 😹 I wanted a property like the one Im after before the current administration took over but now I need it for safety and sanity purposes. If I close on the place Im looking at I will be near the beach but far enough away to be outside tsunami inundation zones. I want to be free from the national political sh¡tstorm and as free from natural disasters as possible while remaining driving distance from where I grew up and love, the Ptld metro area. ❤🧡💛💚💙💜 The older I get, the less patience I have for the buffoonery of others who dont critically think.

I will maximize connections and minimize acquisition, also reduce what I currently have that is not essential. I will prepare emergency plans based on the most likely threats---economic, security and environmental---and will watch the news closely for signs of imminent trouble. I will make sure that important records and images are protected from loss of internet access. In the garden, I will grow what is least troublesome and most productive in my area. To the perennial landscape, I am adding blackberries, chokeberries, strawberries, a pomegranate and possibly a second fig.

Well, we have some job uncertainty right now, so the first thing is figuring out if we'll still be here or need to move. While im waiting on that, I've noticed that my neighborhood is not as well-connected as it could be, so im going to lean in on connecting a bit, bringing stuff around, etc. Knit some trivets and bring... maybe soup and cornbread as a starter. I know I'm not going to get chickens. Between bird flu and the coyote den in my backyard, I suspect it would be too much work. I have planted a bunch of native berries already this past fall -- huckleberries and thimbleberries. If we're staying, I'll add salmonberries to the mix. I've been doing mostly some native plant conversion to boost the local pollinator population, but will likely add some other food in the sunny areas if we're still here. Will add a second hazelnut bush, which won't give us stuff right away but will eventually.

I've been making sure I have high calorie/high nutrition food groups in the garden like summer squash/winter squash and large quanities of beans/kale plus herbs [culinary and medicinal], plus anything that can be canned in a variety of ways like tomatos [tomato soup, tomato sauce, pizza sauce, tomato/tomatillo salsa. I also highly recommend quail as a dual purpose animal [meat and eggs] even though they can't be free range like chickens due to a lack of homing instinct. Also making friends in the neighborhood.

I didn’t see the planning video, but I have been planning for a long time. Improving the outcomes in my garden has been primary for years. We’ve had chickens for 18 years. We buy wheat berries and have a mill for flour (we did this mainly for fun, but it has turned into a real benefit), electric car with a charger in the garage, canning supplies, sewing supplies. I’m incredibly lucky to have been able to aquire all the appliances and equipment over the years. I started because of the impending climate issues. I wasn’t really expecting to need them because of a pandemic. It appears as if we’ll be relying heavily upon them now, once again.

Thank you!! I needed this video. I struggle with this crazy hyper-independent mindset a lot of times (which I think is pretty common in us Xennial women) and think I should have time to work full time, PLUS garden, crochet, learn to knit, make my own bread, learn to spin yarn, etc etc (my interests and hobbies are out of control and not in line with the amount of time I actually have to do them all). But right now, I've been focused on garden planning and wanting to completely change the layout to support more food since I think we are going to depend on it. I've found myself struggling with "how much" to grow because I'm anti-food waste, and its also difficult because for years we were a six person household, but now 2 kids are grown and on different sides of the country, one is in college and one still home in high school so meal planning has changed drastically for us over the past couple of years. I also struggle with community building in my subdivision too because I'm a blue dot in a red area, but at the end of the day if it gets bad, I know we will still be falling into a working class vs ruling class struggle, and morally I can't watch other people go hungry.... SO, at this point, I think I'm going for higher amounts of produce (well, we have just a basic 1/4 acre subdivision lot, so not crazy amounts but more than I normally would) but keeping it more basic (potatoes, onions, tomatoes, carrots, peppers, greens, pumpkins/squash, sunflowers for seeds, and herbs....wish I could add a few chickens, but the neighborhood frowns on that). Want to have enough to help support my parents also. But like you say, I have to keep in mind the time commitment needed because my husband and I work outside of the home full time and our youngest has sports all year that consumes a lot of our evenings and weekends traveling for games.

(Canadian context - utterly terrified for you guys, and incredibly unsettled about what's coming our way and I don't mean tariffs) By the time I went to bed on US election night, I knew I was going to want to start meat rabbits in 2025. It's been on my radar since I moved out of the city in 2021, but I kept putting it off (concentrating on garden/forest garden/chickens/intensive dog training of a doggo who turned out to be VERY challenging... she's amazing, but it's sucked up a lot of my mental energy for over 2 years). It's just me & the dog & two cats, in terms of a second source of meat - I live alone, so I don't need to bring on a whole stable of bunnies. I just need to get the hutches set up, and get going. The sooner the better, but it's looking like that might be a couple of months out yet. I hope to be able to share vegetables with neighbours in 2025, and maybe even the food bank in the village down the road - I expand the garden every year, and this year it'll be big enough that I'll be producing "more than just a little bit of this and that." Expanding the garden happens every year, so this was already in the works whatever happened in November, but. I'm glad I'm at a place where maybe my contribution can be a little more substantial.

I'm new to the Portland area, but you might want to be aware that you could be looking at a large winter squash harvest with just a few plants. Last time I grew winter squash in TN, I ended up with 60 pounds of candy roaster squash from 3 seeds! The plants took a lot of space, but they were happy! If you're overwhelmed by looking at seeds, you might talk to others you know who are gardening and share. For most things, a packet of seeds is a lot more seeds than you need. Also, I don't know about your local library system, but some have seed sharing programs where you can donate seeds and "check out" seeds for yourself. So you might look there as well as in catalogs...

We expanded from 1 raised bed to 3, I plan to leave a box and a "fresh food, take what you like, save the seeds to grow some more" sign on the edge of our front yard and check it every day, use what doesn't go before it goes bad tho as to not waste. We live in a closely packed, well-walked low income neighborhood BUT we have the biggest back and front yard out of our mobile park. Id really like to put herbs and flowers out front, bc it's not doing anything useful, and add bouquets to the sharing box or even make some (edit: garden) boxes to offer to the neighbors we have relationships with that make their tiny yards work for gardening, as more space. I grow almost exclusively in pots, and I started out with a book called, "The Bountiful Container," by Rosemary McGee and Maryann Stuckey. It covers a lot of the basics and focuses exclusively on edible plants. I believe it's out of print now but I've gotten used copies on Amazon. Jessica Sowards (sp?) of Roots and Refuge Farm here on KZbin also has a book for beginner gardeners, and loads of informational videos on her channel. You'll make lots of mistakes starting out, so don't get discouraged if you kill your seedlings or something (took me years to figure out how to keep them alive-- for me, a small fan, cinnamon for anti fungal properties, and high quality seed starting mix to avoid fungus gnats have been key--I like Black Gold seed starter. Not the Burpee stuff at Walmart lol). Don't go too big too fast. It's easy to get overwhelmed. It's hard when it feels so urgent.

I'm astonished that you removed beans, since I find those extremely rewarding. I had maybe 10 green bush bean plants and harvested enough from them to fulfill my green bean needs over the entire winter. The plants do not need plenty of space and if you harvest regularly, they will grow more fruit. The beans are also easy to store and prepare: just cut them off the bush with scissors in a way that leaves the stem on the bush, and then you only need to rinse them off (sometimes not even that), put them in a bag and in your freezer. From there they can go right into a pot.

A couple of years ago my wife and I tried a "proper" garden and it flopped horribly, but we had done container gardening before that when we were apartment dwellers, and those container gardens absolutely thrived. So... A much expanded version of that is planned for this year. And, something new we are doing is starting with seeds indoors. So far, we've already got everything we need for that, light and mat included, except the seed starter mix. (Please wish us luck!! My wife's thumb is greener than mine, but we're definitely not at your level!) And thank you for your focus on community-- we need that now more than ever!

For example, one neighbour loves to garden and he shares his crop each year, and another neighbour snow blows the sidewalks and driveways on my block all winter. So I am working with a couple other neighbours to cooperatively garden this upcoming season and then hold canning parties in the fall (I have a pressure canner). Hoping that we will continue to build an active support network on our block.

what would be a good minimalist garden? i was thinking the 3 sisters, potatoes, bell pepper, arugula, maybe some herbs.

Corn takes a lot of space to have enough stalks to pollinate. Using the word minimalist isn't defining your goals. Minimalist what? Space? Effort? Harvest? It's the opposite of a goal. Nutrient dense, good storage capability, calorie dense

@@az55544 minimalist as in something to stave off starving to death. so calorie dense with enough vitamin to keep you from getting stuff like scurvy. or at the least, a substantial victory garden. i am thinking bare bones survival for the hard times ahead.

I’m reading, enjoying my plants, praying, and hoping his supporters wake up before we all go over the cliff. And looking forward to 2026 when we again vote for senators and representatives.

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. I really need community right now. I need someone who sees and has actionable steps. I think a lot of us just don't know what to do.

I am so grateful you are posting here. I quit TT. Last fall, I had planned to cut back on my garden as I have a lot preserved, but this video has sparked me to rethink. I will plant more, I have a lot of seeds. I will put the extra into the community blessing boxes. I think people will need it.

I’m so glad to have found you. Great ideas. I’m a Master Gardener from Portland now retired in Coos County. I’m having a house built and a new garden. I have been planning and planning the garden and orchard. In rural areas we are better at getting together for making applesauce, canning and helping others. I hope to be able to share more. I have been stocking up on local poison oak honey and tea. Thanks for devoting your time.

I have made More garden space available, but growing Less varieties of foods: Tomatoes, winter squash, kales, leeks, and scarlet runner beans are the backbone. Then I have perennials: blueberries, asparagus, currants, grapes, arugula, wild greens. Good thoughts❤️🇨🇦

I love that you pointed out that (personal) self-sufficiency is a myth AND it is incompatible with permaculture and perma ethics that are the basis of all! M Sending lots of love from SE Europe where through history we learned the most basic skill of them all - how to manage no matter what and how to dodge the system that messes with you from all sides. Cheers and never give up!

I'm lucky to not live in America but I'm pretty sure not even Australia will avoid what's coming. So I'm preparing by trying to be more food secure. Grow more food, save seeds etc

I've joined a local CSA which pretty much locks in my vegetable prices. I buy beef and chicken from the young farm family down the road. And I have a small garden and orchard. I know that I am blessed to live in Vermont.

This year, we are adding chickens. I now have to care for my parents which has turned out to be a lot of waiting around their house until they need help. I will be using thier garden to grow most of my annuals, my permaculture garden pretty much takes care of itself at this point.

I have watched a couple of your videos and today I decided to subscribe. I have been gardening and preserving for 45 years. My pantry is always well stocked. I have 2 large gardens, a small orchard, fruit bushes, and a few neighbors that allow me to forage on their property. I am expanding more fruit bushes and trees this year. Water catchment is also a priority. We have been in a 3 year drought. It’s just the 2 of us now but I garden and can like all the kids are home.

I was a hobby homesteader in my old state, growing most of my vegetables and eggs for my family plus some. We just moved to a new growing zone and our first year was less than stellar because we dealt with mold for the first time ever. I hope I have corrected for the new environment and we can get back to some security but we have much less land than before. I used to be able to share with neighbors and I hope to get back to that some day.

Thank you for this video. I needed to hear this so badly. I come from a long line of Appalachian farmers and gardeners, but this year will be my first time raising a garden and preserving food on my own. I was putting so much pressure on myself to grow and put away enough food for the entire year, even though I know that’s unrealistic. The worry has been paralyzing. I just have to remember to do what I can with what I have to the best of my ability.

A friend of mine puts veggie plants amongst her flowers; very beautiful and productive since the bees pollinate more easily.

I put together a shopping list of "car camping" supplies so I can pull the trigger on a kit very quickly if need be... But for now I am not spending that money. I am converting my patio garden from an emphasis on flowers to an emphasis on calories and nutrition. Ive already changed PCP to move away from a catholic hospital. I re-established a library card (and even borrowed Rules for Radicals!) I have an issue with my birth certificate that I am trying to sort out so I can get a passport. In the meantime I am studying Spanish (off and on) and researching countries/visas IF i have to leave for safety.

Going to do growbag tomatoes and salad garden and Scarlett runner beans. Doing a chicken collab with a friend. Keeping things maintainable. In Canada so worrying about the economic effects of a sustained trade war so trying to.stay small and efficient. I can a bunch of stuff so will continue to do that.
