Some more info I've learned from commenters since filming this video: - Publix donated heavily to RNC👎 - Trader Joe's is known for union busting and also stealing product ideas from smaller brands👎 - Costco supports DEI and is generally viewed as a good place to work by employees👍 Do with that info what you will, no company is perfect! Love being thoughtful about this! It’s not always so black and white with publicly traded- Trader Joe’s might truly be your best bet in the area, but they have a really rough record of union busting and they have a nasty habit of partnering with small local brands, stealing their recipes and even branding, and then releasing those foods as “trader joes” brand, thus effectively squashing that smaller local brand. So, they might be the best bad choice but they aren’t a good choice. Also, Costco has a surprisingly good record on employee satisfaction and on using their size to buy lots of fairly traded goods (at least when I last researched this, all costco brand chocolate was quietly fair trade). But ofc, because no company is “good”, you have to keep an eye open because they can and will shift to doing the shitty thing once they get a reputation for being the more ethical option.

This year my small attempt to change my habit is buying books in person at used books stores when i can (not all books are available at my local library as i live in Georgia) and buying coffee at my local coffee shops (I make coffee at home during the week, but i like to treat myself on the weekends). I know its not much, but I'm trying to do what i can to change my habits. I also started keeping a buying journal; so i basically write down every time i buy something that is not part of my monthly bills, weekly grocery list, and budget weekly gas. So far in the month of January I spent $250 😵💫! something needs to change!!

I have no intention to purchase any clothing or footwear new, except replacing undies, bras, socks, running shoes and hiking boots. It feels really good to be at this place! I also participate in natural fiber BST (buy sell trade) sites so I can replace wool and other natural fiber items that way. I love my local Buy Nothing Group and that’s my favorite way to pick up and gift things locally. I did a low buy year last year and ditched Amazon prime this year. I think I can be more intentional about my grocery vendors. Although their food quality is good, they contributed hundreds of thousands of dollars to the Republican Party…I understand your thought process but being privately vs publicly traded unfortunately is not a good measure for corporate ethics….the best way to measure this is to see what their labor practices are and what political causes they donate too. Not to add to the negativity but in the interest of transparency, Trader Joes is also known for union busting (heartbreaking to me at a TJs fan). Local CSAs are also a good option for food, can be split with family or friends. At this point, I can't let go of TJs completley but I've cut down both the frequency and amount I purchase there in favor of Aldi. Community pantrys (if you are struggling at all, use it!!) or community dinners are another way to supplement and build solidarity.

This is a great video and brought up some things I had not even thought of. Adding a few things: --Chest freezers are a great investment because you can take advantage of sales --For instance, I aggressively shop the sales at Publix, I know about how often and what goes on sale so I just plan around that and stock up --If you eat meat and you have a chest freezer you can buy meat shares from local farms, like 1/4 or 1/8 of beef and save a ton, and if you have even a small garden you can freeze your own produce --Misfits Market is a pretty decent option for organic produce and some other pantry items IF Whole Foods is your only good local option for organic food & you want to avoid that --Discount markets are great, I've lived near some that are SO good it's worth driving an hour and getting a couple big coolers, like BBs Grocery Outlet in Pennsylvania --I struggle with the swapping/freecycling stuff because my area is really spread out and it's like, driving 30 minutes to pick up one little thing. We do have some good thrift stores, which helps!

Bulk meat from Costco is great! My husband and I usually buy a whole chicken at Trader Joe's and butcher it ourselves. Lasts us about a week and so much cheaper than individual cuts

Unrelated, but I have to ask! What products/ingredients do you use on your hair?? It's so smooth and shiny! 😍Do you have a hair styling video somewhere?

The AI slop & lack of real people will drive everyone off Facebook eventually. I swear that less than 5% of the people there are real, Even the people replying to the bots end up being hacked accounts that were abandoned ages ago.

My goals for my money- Trader Joe’s/ Farmer’s markets/ community garden Pet food from local independent stores Clothes and shoes only if there is a clear need ( I needed base layers recently ) and have found REI to have everything I need actually Most other purchases like toilet paper and face wash etc come from DTC subscription sites like cocokind.

I just want to jump in here and say that it's awesome (and wise) that you are aware! What I worry about immediately is people shaming other people. It's US against them. Not US against US. The comments are starting with the shaming already. NO store is in business to do good in this world, no matter how many socks they donate. They are in business to make money. YOUR money. At the same time, this is about Americans dropping the disgusting consumerism habits they have picked up in the past 3 decades and not about going full stop right this second. Please don't shame old people who can't drive for using Amazon Prime. Please stop shaming people for going to _____ insert store here. Instead, use this year to educate yourself on your own habits and learning about other methods. I also highly recommend Goods Unite Us app. Somethings you can't make or grow yourself. You will have to shop. The idea is to put thought behind where you are buying from. No store is perfect. Most anti-Capitalist thing you can do? Don't buy it. Use your library, borrow from a friend, find something else that works or barter.

There is a standalone Buy Nothing app. Much fewer people use it but some do!

I just learned this yesterday. I don't think I have another option in my area except Target/Kroger. Trying to shop there as minimally as possible

Great tips! I love Trader Joe’s. I wish they had curbside pickup or delivery so that my mom could use them, but I understand that would jack up the price.

I hate the stock market, on principal. It seems like an evil force against society, to force companies to grow endlessly..

Publix is heavily conservative in value and the way they treat workers. They donated to trump’s campaign as well

Most of us already have more than enough. Do not let these corporations drain your wealth with fabricated needs. Live your life

I've learnt that the leading companies just eventually buy what we start buying instead of them. So Our money will end up in their hands once again under a different name.
