My GMC Jimmy anecdote: In 1989 I was working at a small, 6-person graphic design/print prep company. The "company car" was the owner's early-'80s GMC Jimmy (I don't remember the exact year, or the engine). We used it to deliver & pick up work from clients. Only thing was, it was a manual, and I barely knew how to drive a stick at the time ( I was 21). I remember I clashed the gears once. It still ran fine, LOL.

I believe the S10 and Ranger were more of a reaction to the tightening of the Chicken Tax. They used to send Japanese built trucks without the bed attached to avoid the 25% import tax and install the beds in California. They closed that loophole in 1980, which encouraged domestic production of small trucks.

It had black vinyl interior, a sunroof, sliding rear window, no AC, no power steering, a 4 speed manual transmission, and a 1.9 liter 4 cylinder engine. It was somebody's beach buggy at one time so they added bed rails, running boards, roll bars, a bug deflector, and a Trans-Am bird on the hood. What a machine that little truck was. Seeing those little square body trucks and SUVs in this video brought back a lot of memories.

I owned a ‘92 S10. That truck had quality control issues from the day I bought it. Both door handles fell off the first week I owned it! The paint peeled off the hood and roof within the first year. But I miss that truck more than any vehicle I have owned. It really was a good little truck. Edit: I feel I should give a little more info. My S10 was a Tahoe edition single cab short bed that was garnet in color. It had the Iron Duke 4 cyl. with a 5 spd standard trans. I mentioned the color because I saw a few back then but it wasn’t a really popular color. I sold my little S10 right after I joined the military and I regretted it ever since.

That was a cool truck. Very reliable with a good ride. Too bad, Chevrolet and Detroit goofed up on small details in those days. Late 1970s and early 1980s American rigs were generally horrid. However, by 1992, quality was improving. It is too bad GM improved quality but lost their customer base. I always buy from the Big 3 myself. Last 20 years, I buy GM now.

Kinda funny to think it had a bigger engine than my current full-size truck, an F-150 with the 3.5L EcoBoost.

Afterwards we took it to a mechanic to make sure we hadn’t just built ourselves a death trap. 😂. The S-10 is still one of my favorite trucks of all time. My family had a '92 S10 Blazer from 1997-2004 and I learned to drive in it. Oddly although it was a four-door it had a five speed manual. Great little truck, we were hard on it and it just kept going. Only real issue we ever had with it were the valve stem seals leaking oil, so it would puff a little blue smoke on start up, but never while running. That and the front exterior door handles started to rattle a bit. I think we replaced spark plugs and brakes once but other than that it was pretty much just gas, oil changes and a few sets of tires. My family road tripped that Blazer literally all over the western half of the US, then moved to Hawaii and brought it with us. As a teen I explored every unpaved road I could find thanks to the 4wd. Camped in it tons of times. I saw so many cool places and had so many adventures thanks to that car. ❤️ I was sad to leave it behind when my family moved back to the mainland but a friend told me a couple years later he still saw it running around on a regular basis.

When I say this was a bare bones truck, I mean it had a bench seat with an AM-only radio and no cigarette lighter (still called as such back then). Worked good for what it was intended to do and my whole extended family borrowed it anytime someone needed to move. It also hauled Christmas Trees, rocks, fencing material, my dog and if I needed to borrow the lawn mower, this is what we used. Though even as a kid, the middle seat was small and uncomfortable. And it kept going. In 2002, I was borrowing it because I was still learning to drive my car (it was a manual transmission) and it still ran fine-though don't ask me how I managed to parallel park it on an uphill. That being said, after filling up the gas tank and looking at the bill, I decided to speed up learning how to drive a manual. My family finally had to haul it out in...2021. Yes, 2021-over 30 years after my grandfather got it. The last I saw it operational was well over 10 years ago, but still beyond its normal operational lifespan. My cousin kept on trying to fix it up, despite knowing nothing about cars (likely why he couldn't). Even the people we ended up giving it to wanted to try to fix it up (and hopefully use it for what it was intended ie: hauling stuff). And the dashboard was not in good shape; the years turned it brittle, changed the blue color into gray and there was a massive crack in it. But the starter motor? Still turned (!)-even if the engine couldn't actually start.

100 percent. I had a 84 Jimmy with 4X4, the 2.8 and 5 speed. That truck was underpowered (A 4.3 Vortec would have been awesome) but otherwise it was my daily car, hunting truck, farm truck, and had some of the best times in my life in that truck. If I could find one in a barn that was optioned the same way I would drop a 4.3 in it and keep it forever.

I had a 91 S10 Blazer 4x4. It looked just like the one in the thumbnail, two-tone red and black with the 4.3 V6. The S10 badge was red on the dashboard. I think it was a Tahoe package. That thing was so fun to drive and practically indestructible. I bought it from an old man in Fort Pierce Florida back in 2008, for $1,200. It had 211,000 miles on it and was in pristine condition. Very well maintained. He and his wife would use it to go visit their daughter and family in New York once or twice a year. After his wife passed away, he didn't see the need to have it anymore because he couldn't make the trip there by himself anymore. It made a great work truck and I drove it, sometimes 7 days a week, for another 7 years and put an additional 100,000 miles on it. After that I sold it to a guy for $500 who wanted a truck to cruise around his property in Okeechobee and from what I understand he still has it to this day. Probably should have never got rid of that thing.

I love your videos - they provide great historical context. It's very interesting to see how these vehicles were thought about and developed at the time. I would be interested in a Chevy Celebrity (and it's sister cars) video as I owned an '89 for a few years. This car (as many of the 80's) featured a unique mix of terrible and surprisingly ok elements. The engine was a shockingly fast V6, while the handling was terrifyingly soft and loose. The interior was roomy and comfortable albeit made with cheap finishes. Thanks for making these videos!

Nice! Brings back memories of my father's two-tone grey and blue 1991 GMC Sonoma SLE 4x4 extended cab with a 4.3 Vortec V6 and the rare 5 speed manual. He bought it used in 1994 and kept it until 2006. We got a lot of use out of it. Reliability was ok, better than most GMs of the era. Due to the rare powertrain combo, I kind of wish we had kept it, even though it was more like a third vehicle by then that didn't get used much.

In my experience with gm products the quality got cheaper after the 94’ model year. Cheaper interiors that didn’t hold up, etc. I’ve owned a 94’ k2500 for the past 17 years and wouldn’t trade it for a new truck ever. I do miss that 94’ Jimmy. Wish I never got rid of it.

I’ve never owned one of these vehicle but I’ve been around several/ In 1988 my dad bought a new 2dr. Black and silver Blazer. He loved it but the silver paint started falling off after a year of ownership. A problem shared with many GM cars of the time. Around the same time I met a girl in my church youth group who owned an S-10 ext. cab with that Isuzu Diesel engine. The only one I’ve ever seen. It was a high trim lever truck with faux sheep skin seat inserts from the factory. In the mid 90’s I worked at a Chevy dealer when the 95 Blazer came out. We could not keep them in stock. I still love those trucks. The guy that supplied all the tires for the dealership used only 80’s S-10 trucks for his hauling duties as they were such durable trucks for him tire hauling duties.
