After years of stability questions about the hull design for the U.S. Navy’s new three-ship class of stealth destroyers, the commanding officer of the lead ship, USS Zumwalt, is satisfied: It handles the seas as well, if not better, than previous classes of surface combatants.
Here’s How the Destroyer Zumwalt’s Stealthy Design Handles Stormy Seas

Former carrier quartermaster. Worked on the bridge. Rough seas is when they wash across the flight deck, and everything that can fit in hangarbay is tied down. Watching from the bridge as the forward section of the flight deck plows under oncoming swells and then rising again is the best ride in the world.

I was on CVN 70 CARL VINSON I remember having waves crashing over our elevators and water rolling into the hanger deck . Also once while in the Indian Ocean we were trying to out run a typhoon we encountered rough seas and for the first time while sitting at a table in our berthing playing cards my chair and I slide away from the table. There was one other time we had sea trails there were no air wing on board and we went out while there was a storm now that was a wild ride I was walking up hill then down hill...lol i know that doesn't sounded like much of anything to a sailor on a small boy who experience pitch ,roll, and heave and walk the bulkheads. But Because the carrier was always so Cadillac I knew we were in heavy seas.

True. Amazing what sand crabs call rough. I'm guessing the capt took her to Alaska because he heard there was going to be a dime beer night. Seriously when I first went on board a tin can I thought the 2 straps were to hold my blanket and pillow. The first rough weather I joined the other greenhorn on the deck while listening to othe crew members howl. They had waited for the moment 😊

The sea was quite calm at 1:22 but you can already see a lot of spray travelling along the inverted bow onto the deck of the ship. The Zumwalts may be stable but must be very wet even at moderate sea conditions.

When I first saw the Zumwalt, I thoght it was a strange looking ship; however, the more I see her, I have taken a like to her. What's not to like, the ride is smoother, has a somewhat stealth mode and other countries cannot see your goodies. I have no doubt that the Chinese and Russians will copy design once we test it.

Agreed, a 40ft yacht crossing Bass Straight or the English Channel should be able to handle a 9 meter sea and a 6 meter wave at the same time, which of course means the seas are larger than the boat. I have done it. A U.S ship should be able to handle more than a 4 foot sea. Take that thing down to the southern oceans and then send another post. Perhaps range, fuel capacity, gross tonnage and crew capacity would be more exciting?

Elijah Hodges, the use of ‘propellers’ here was due to a quote by the actual officer, not the narrator. Maybe he chose the word so civilians would know what he meant, since not everyone understands that ‘screws’ refers to the water propulsion devices.

Tumblehome hulls were of course abandoned when their proclivity to capsize when taking on water dunked the idea. Today's use must presume a superior defense ability. Perhaps also other new safeguards against hull breach induced capsize. The return of the tumblehome hull. I woulda' never thunk it. Also, like Jason Frederick, I complain that real film the Zumwalt In high water wasn't available in this vid.

Been watching this DD in calm lake like waters, and months ago asked how does she handle heavy seas ? So today this video comes along to talk heavy seas. And the heavy Alaska seas, looked tough, but they were empty sea shots, the Skipper saying she handles better than ANY surface ship he has sailed in, but the ONLY shots of DD 1000 are the same old calm water shots , seems strange with the title of this video , they didn't show a single shot of her "with a bone in her teeth" , in heavy seas. seems strange !

ACR-3 USS Brooklyn (1896-1922) had the tumble home design, It is a French design, and it is one of the most stable in rough seas, never mind looking totally cool. these ships even standing still, give an appearance of speed and stability.

What he meant to say was that the boat does not have any flat sides or body panels, they are all angled in a direction that would deflect radar singles that they can’t bounce back to the radar unit, basically making it invisible to all modern radar systems

OMG you are right ! What a call ! ! , if you press 1:11 then QUICKLY press play then pause (double tap the button), you can see the spaceship on the right getting ready to race down the wave. In the movie the time index is 1:12:30 seconds. In this video, just when the spaceship gets big enough draw attention to itself, they cut the scene....lol.....Z

@@norahriddhientertainment9027 Keep in mind that there was originally going to be a lot more built. So when you reduce the number built from 32 down to 3, you have to spread all the costs across a lot less hulls. This also drove the cost of ammunition way up.

@@shielahaberecht3417 the three boats cost almost 24 billion to build and the advanced gun system is useless. This thing is a bust and it's butt ugly to boot.

@shielahaberecht3417 4 жыл бұрын
@@diver0129 That is true.. I think, but it's speculation, that the Navy decided a large build of that class wasn't necessary, thus saving procurement dollars, and the new tech already developed would be used across multiple platforms thus gaining a wide return on all the investment. They get three top shelf destroyers and the power technology for directed energy weapons fleet-wide.
