The elegance of historical dress was often down to servants, wives, tailors and/or dry cleaners taking a great deal of time to maintain the clothes: cleaning carefully, repairing, debobbling, ironing, steaming, hanging up or folding properly. We have to be our own help now! If it’s worth buying, it’s worth learning to take care of: a bit of basic hand sewing, ironing or steaming, and especially washing carefully. Here’s a couple of tips in that department: 1) Wash everything (except underwear and socks) inside out and/or in mesh bags. This will reduce wear and fading on the visible surface. 2) Do not put your nice pieces, even t-shirts, in the dryer to dry fully. Maybe 5 minutes for the wash wrinkles to drop out. Then hang to air dry. If your dryer has a cold/fluff setting, put the dry clothes in there for 5-10 minutes in case they’ve gotten crunchy on the drying rack. This minimal dryer approach will keep them from shrinking, fading and looking old before their time.
