This year we went a family of 5 Bilbao to Barcelona facing a similar situation. I have asked a couple of bike shops for card boxes and found for all of us a box. Good source is Decathlon, call them up upfront, they are pretty much willing to give you the box for free, so do any of the smaller shops as then they don’t have to take care of getting rid of a lot of paper garbage. Starting the trip, we habe assembled the bikes at the airport and left the boxes close to a larger trash container. No issues there either.

You can buy heavy duty bike boxes from Qantas pretty cheap, where they have an office in an airport near you that is. I have used them exclusivley for travel and never had an issue.

Thanks for the insight on bikepacking logistics. I have a follow up question, what do you do about a bag for your gear when flying? In other words, one has lots of individual bags for gear on the bike , but you to put in one bag of sorts to check on the plane. What do you do with the bag that you used for the plane? I have had luck with hotels holding on to my bag, but that does not work for a point to point ride. Thanks in advance You all are awesome!

If you can find the time, get the ferry home from Bilbao.

I'm planning to fly my bike to Berlin then cycle to Brussels next year, and will be getting a cardboard bike box to pack my bike in. My big question is what do I do with the box when I get to my destination 😱

Never had an issue trying to get free bike boxes in Spain, last time I wasn’t lucky at LBS and went to Decathlon instead and they gladly gave me one

As a former ramp rat, it is not the handlers that are damaging your bikes. It is the conveyor belts. Your luggage travels for much, much farther than you think. Think miles of conveyors. Jimmy is correct though, at the end, easier to handle to get on the plane is best, but these large items are put on last, and are generally more cared for. Or were on my team anyway.

The harder thing is getting a taxi big enough to take two or so boxes from the bike shop to the airport or accommodation .

Give the shop a "drink" for the box. They're doing you more of a favour than you are for taking it away.
